Tall Fescue clumps can really start to become a problem when it comes to appearance when mixed in with bluegrass and ryegrass in your cool season lawn. In this video I show you how to remove the tall fescue clumps using glyphosate. This becomes a little easier when the grass you want to keep is dormant, but could be done at any time if you are willing to fix the dead spots that are created from the spraying.

I moved 2 years ago and have been trying to go the "organic" route and just pull them out, but could never get all the roots (I think their deep roots may be more tenacious than I realized). this week I decided to hit it with roundup and just get it all. End result is about the same, both leave a giant dead spot that needs reseeding. My goal is to get it all gone and then just stay on top and pull it when I see it.

I waited till it rained on some days, or just watered the evening before, and then dug it up. It was much easier that way, but took hours. Then I put Bermuda seeds with fertilizer in the empty holes. I did it little by little so there wouldn’t be so many holes in my yard all at once. It took a LOT of work doing it that way, but it actually worked. The last home owners decided to throw tall fescue seeds because they didn’t know they had Bermuda grass…even though they apparently paid $3000 for Bermuda sod when they bought the house 2 years ago. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The woman said she saw that it was supposed to grow good in the shade, so she bought it. It was one of those Scotts ez seed bags.

If it's in clumps you can dig out or pull out of the ground then yes you can do that. Mine had some clumps and other areas it's just mixed in with the other grass where I really can't remove it. The spots that you do rip it out can just be reseeded and that should help.

I'm hoping that throughout my process of mowing low, dethatching, and aerating that it will pretty much pull out a lot of that dead stuff that's leftover. In the past I did this on a smaller scale to just a few spots and I raked those up after they were dead until I got down to ground level and then just seeded those spots as if I was doing a bare spot seeding.

@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
It might be pushing it as far as timeframe goes. You would need a couple weeks or so to kill it and then make sure everything was dead and then bluegrass takes 21 days or so just to start minimal growth. So by that time I would be thinking you may get into possible frost in your area and it wouldn't survive a freeze very well when it's in a very delicate stage. Kind of up to you what you feel comfortable with.

Eric Kersten I have 2 clumps in my front yard as well right along the sidewalk. Driving me nuts! My plan is to dig them out and transplant grass from my side yard. I've only lived in my house for 2 years and last fall I had to plant all new grass in half my backyard. There is clearly a dividing line in color between old and new. And because of this, I don't want the spots in the front to stick out more than they already do. Thus, I think that by using existing grass it should blend in perfectly.
@BroShaver
@BroShaver 6 лет назад
The roots are deep. I used a wick applicator to and roundup to nuke mine. It seems roundup is a better option than digging up for this reason. Maybe the it seeded. After my application the next year there was less, but still some. It takes a few seasons of roundup IMO.

Hi Ryan. I live in Felton, Delaware and did a complete lawn reno this last fall. The grass I chose was a tall fescue blend. I notice though that within all of the nice seeded grass that is lower, there are very tall clumps of seemingly (another type maybe?) of tall fescue as well. They look different though. Do you think this fescue came from seed from neighboring areas? I just want it to be all uniform with the nice fescue that I seeded last fall.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 5 лет назад
Hmm there's a few different variables there so it's hard to say. I wish I had a better answer for you...
@TheTdprice51
@TheTdprice51 5 лет назад
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care yeah, makes sense. I have a picture but don’t think you can upload them into these comments. I think the fescue that I don’t want is coarse wide blade tall fescue, and with all of those clumps just looks different than the seeded fescue. I guess my plan is to just keep preventing weeds in existing turf, detach, aerate, and overseer in the fall. I suppose doing this should eventually leave more of the nice seeded tall fescue than the clumps probably coming from neighboring weed-infested areas surrounding my house.

Ryan, I have two problems. How can I easily get rid of mushrooms? How can I easily get rid of grubs? Does Weed and feed help these issues?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
Mushrooms would usually be caused by too much moisture so if things dry out, they normally go away. Grubs you would need to get a grub killer. I have used this in the past: amzn.to/2v47SE2 Neither of those things would really have anything to do with weed and feed so that would be more for weed issues.

There's a couple things that happened in my case. 1. My backyard used to be essentially pasture grass before our house was put there so there's some native stuff that was in the soil which included tall fescue. 2. When I knew nothing about lawn care I had a company aerate and overseed my yard but the problem was they used tall fescue when I had a bluegrass/ryegrass lawn. So I've been trying to get rid of it ever since but it's kind of a losing battle to completely get rid of it unless I kill off the whole area and start over with what I want.
