As I get closer and closer to beginning my fall lawn renovation and overseeding, I wanted to make an update on the tall fescue clump removal that I have going on in my yard. The recent rain revealed that I had more tall fescue mixed in than I originally thought, but I did get some of the bigger clumps killed and will aerate heavily when I overseed to add as much new seed as possible.

Looking good bro. It's frightening and shocking to see that lawn green up and those areas you killed really pop dead! I bet your neighbors are secretly thinking "haha, the kid who dominates us has finally messed up!"... either way, I really enjoy watching your lawn work man, you are inspiring, and that TimeMaster, you were right, it's an incredible machine. I'm glad I have one now, but you will always be the original "Time Master." :)

I have been thinking they are probably wondering what the heck is going on with the "lawn guy" but here in a few weeks, they won't wonder anymore! I saw you got the Timemaster! I was going to say that man how cool would it be if The Lawn Care Nut mentioned me as this midwest guy we call Mr. Timemaster....haha - Thanks for the kind words and keep up the good work!

Good idea pulling up the clumping fescue by hand after a soaking rain, when the ground is soft. Thanks!

All of the neighbors must think the same of me! I'm always pulling grass out of my lawn and throwing it behind the Marigolds, or Zinnias. Of course, none of my neighbors knows what Tall Fescue is. I even pull KYB if it isn't the cultivar I like, but KYB has a rhizome propagating more new growth. Rake, rake, rake....

Ryan, that tall fescue is exactly why I killed my lawn off I hate the clumping, I used the 41% glyphosate and after 5 days it was still green in most the lawn.. So I did a second application on the fifth day, mostly Dead now 5 days later, and today I did the third application some green spots and areas left.. that stuff just don't want to die.. I'm glad I started early otherwise I'd be 2 weeks behind my program..

I unfortunately reseeded my entire law in the spring after a deep till. Used Scott’s sun and shade. And the seed looked great until the fescue took over. I am going to try to overseed with blue in fall

I have created a similar dead patchwork quilt of my lawn too due to an invasion of dallis grass. I just came in from aerating about 2/3 of my area in quadruple passes. All of my surrounding fields are KY31 since they were once pasture, its way too many acres to worry over. I have no way to irrigate, but the tropical storm Harvey remmants are due in here this weekend and that is wonderful seed starter. I will be seeding aboout 200# of tall turf fescue, the RX type with rhyzomes. I set a test plot with it two weeks ago where a spring house was torn down and it is coming in very heavy and vigerous there and no rain on it (then again, the area is a natural spring). Good luck with yours! It is tough to get and keep a near pure one variety lawn for sure. Rooster

Good Luck, I tried to go all eco several years ago and started overseeding Tallfescue into the largest section of the sick lawn I inherited when I moved. It wasn't responding well to the cold and wind up here in Chicagoland winters and never looked great in the summer even with solid irrigation. I started overseeding two years ago with a northern mix blend and that made it look decent. I think another season or two more along with some judicious digging and it will be wiped out. You can improve it a lot without burning it down in my opinion.

I hate Tall Fescue! Out it goes! I live in USDA hardiness zone 5b, but if I lived further South in the Transition Zone I would change my opinion of Tall Fescue. The alternative is grow Zoysia or Bermuda. When August bakes, that Tall Fescue holds out through heat and drought, while the KYB goes dormant. A week of 90F and no amount of irrigation can keep KYB from dormancy.

Hey Ryan! In one of your videos you mentioned about using the Scotts Starter "Food" for new grass that has the weed preventer in it. I picked up some bags yesterday after doing a little research and wanted to pass along what I found. The active "weed preventer" is Mesotrione, and if you follow the LCN, Mesotrione in its commercial name is Tenacity. I have used Tenacity before and have had pretty good results in its spray application. I have a huge poa annua (Annual Blue Grass) issue in my yard and have ready turf studies where there have been pretty good results with Tenacity applications to reduce/suppresses l poa. So I am really stoked to give the scotts fertilizer a try in hopes it suppresses my poa problem. Keep up the good work!

At this point in the year should I spray my clumping fescue or just wait until the sprin? I live in IL, so the grass is still fairly green in my lawn. Also, should I overseed now and worry about fescue next year?

Thank you. I am a bit confused. Are these clumbs different than Tall Turf Fescue?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
No not really. In a lawn that's predominantly bluegrass and ryegrass then fescue is considered a "weed" because it sticks out like a sore thumb and looks more like a clump of crabgrass. If you have an all fescue lawn or mainly all fescue then it all looks uniform and fine in that scenario.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for creating a very informative channel. I have learnt a lot from this channel. I have one question... After you killed the clumpy fescue with Glyphosate, how did you remove the dead fescue before putting seed? I am trying to remove it using a garden claw, but, it's a very hard job! So, wondering what methods you used? Thanks!
@kevindowe
@kevindowe 7 лет назад
Hate to see your lawn in that condition Brotha, but I know you'll resurrect the areas in no time. Great to see the LCN give you props..."You DESERVE it"👍! What type of seed are leaning toward? I see the back gets a lot of sun.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
Yes it has been stressing me out to see it the way it is right now, but hopefully in a few weeks I will have a better looking lawn. I am thinking I'm going with the perennial ryegrass again that I used last year, and maybe a little bluegrass mixed into that as well. The ryegrass survived both the winter (without really any snow cover) and the drought that we had this summer so I have been impressed. It's super easy to grow and looks great, so all of those things are win win in my book.

Do you choose to mow slowly, or are you limited to how fast you can mow because the quality of cut will decrease?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
Since I'm cutting down a little lower I was slowing down but I have been trying to slow down in general as it should help the cut in general. I could fly through if I wanted to but I was slowing on purpose.

How is your plasty dip holding up? From what I saw in the beginning of the video, it looked to be in ok shape. I have the 2017 timemaster too. Have you noticed that it tends to burn oil. And does your mower start on the first pull? Just curious l
@billd5211
@billd5211 7 лет назад
Duramax 6.6 I have a 2016 and it's been ok. Put an hour meter on it and it's at 115 hrs. Need to do an oil change but It goes threw it pretty quick. The deck will clog up very fast and that will make it run super loud. For the entire time I've had it (4 months) the fan has a clicking noise so something is broken but it's been ok, I just plasti dipped the wheels too
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
In general the plasti dip is holding up ok. I may do a reapply after this season. We'll see. So far the oil hasn't seemed to be a problem for me. First pull pretty much all the time as well.

Ryan I am trying to convert a mixed yard of fescue and Bermuda to all bermuda. Bermuda is dormant but the fescue is dark green. Do you think spraying the fescue with a grass killer can help speed up the process of the Bermuda taking over yard?

Yes if you can see exactly where the fescue is at then I'd try to target that

Hi Ryan, I've got a few clumps of tall fescue that I'd like to get rid of and given the time of year it is, I'm debating on just digging it up or maybe hitting it with some glyphosate and killing it that way. Didn't get to do a renovation last fall so definitely doing it this year. What route would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 5 лет назад
I'd recommend glyphosate mid summer as it might take a couple apps and then renovation in fall
@quedogkualum
@quedogkualum 6 лет назад
After you killed off the tall fescue, did you top dress/seed those areas or did you just aerate and overseed the entire yard without special treatment to the areas? I only asked because I saw in another video where you had some bare spot you top dress and seeded those areas by hand. I’m in the same situation. I going to kill off the clumps, aerate and overseed in the fall, not sure after I kill the clumps should I worry about patching those areas or just aerate and overseed.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 6 лет назад
I topdressed with a little topsoil in those specific spots and also aerated everything. More info here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mhtvEnihs-U.html

Are you just trying to go with a whole Kentucky bluegrass seed or do you just want the fescue to be more evenly spread out through the lawn .... Also when you over seed you going to use a broadcast spreader or going to rent a machine just curious bc I'm doing the same thing myself..
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
I am trying to get rid of the fescue as much as possible and will probably be overseeding perennial ryegrass again. I aerate heavily and then use a broadcast spreader.

Ryan, I enjoy watching your videos. Question: My backyard was hydroseeded (new construction home) and unfortunately crab grass has settled in quite a few areas. Would you recommend aerating & overseeing soon or waiting so I can apply pre emergent in the spring?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
Yeah you could do that but you'll want to get started on the process soon. Do realize that the crabgrass will probably thrive as well while you water but you will need to put down a pre-emergent next season in spring so that it kills it before it can get going.
@bryandaxon7385
@bryandaxon7385 7 лет назад
ryanknorr I will be starting this weekend on the aeration & overseeing. Just to clarify, you recommend applying the pre emergent this coming spring even though I am over seeding soon? What produce would you recommend for the pre emergent? Thanks for your help.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
If you overseed now and get things growing then next spring is when you would want to use pre-emergent before the crabgrass starts to come up next season. I have had good luck in the past with pre-emergent called Dimension.

I have a ton of that clumping tall fescue, I need to nuke it. By the way, any tips on what to do with a bumpy lawn? When pushing my mower over my grass, it's incredibly uneven and bumpy. I'm talking bumpy enough that I'm afraid to mow fast because I feel like I might bust a wheel off. Some people around here use a lawn roller pulled behind a lawn tractor or an asphalt roller, but I feel like that will just compact the hell out of my soil.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 7 лет назад
Yeah I have heard good and bad things about the roller idea. I feel like mine used to be more bumpy as well but I aerate now twice and year and things have improved some with that (in my opinion at least).
@TebbieBear
@TebbieBear 7 лет назад
My grandmother had a very bumpy lawn and the only thing that really helped was top dressing. We did fall aeration, seeded and put down some composted mulch. It really helped and after a few years of doing this her lawn was nice and smooth.
@bigmac3006

Your best bet is to roll the lawn after a rain when the bumps and lumps are softened.
@michaelhovey8007

I have read that a bumpy lawn is caused by worms. I ended up leveling with and like golf courses do. Then top dress and overseed.
