How To Remove That FN Pin

Having trouble with that locking block pin in your FN 509 or FNS? You're not the only one. We've disassembled 50 or so FN pistols without a single issue, and here's how we did it. Use the right tools and follow Scott's instructions and you'll be able to correctly remove the forward locking block pin just like we have.

Watched this video this morning, gave it another shot. Cracked the frame as soon as the pin loosened and came out 1/4 inch on the exit side. I really hope you guys put something out warning people not to attempt this. I am now out over $1000 between the weapon and the trigger kit.

I just bought a customer a new gun. Following the instructions from the video, mushrooming the pin on the second hit. I would not bother with these. The plastic trigger in them can be smoothed out with garnet lapping compound and bunches of dry firing, and of course clean it out when you get the desired results.

Just did mine today. I was worried about the frame cracking so I hit it with the blow dryer until warm. Pins came out with no issues using a nail setter, pin punch, small hammer, and a new roll of Duct tape. Had a harder time re-assembling more than anything.

Grab the Apex tool for the FNS and 509. I just did the install and it went flawlessly. Also use the tool for the reassembly. I used it to completely re-install the pin as I didn't trust my skill to free hand the pin at all. Glad I did because it was TIGHT. I had to remove the tool a couple of times to see if the pin was flush but it was no issue. Polymer around the pin is perfect. You can't even tell it was removed.

I removed the pin in the exact manner described in the video using masking tape roll and my garage floor. 2 taps got it moving and it came out with no issues. This was probably the easiest part of the install. if any of the unfortunate souls that junked their frames want to sell their slides.... I would be interested in possibly purchasing. Overall the videos were an excellent reference and the trigger is amazing.

For what it's worth I received my trigger kit last Tuesday and installed on Wednesday. Prior to take down watched several vedios including yours . Used our granet counter top and armors block about 4 good shacks was out , had more fiddling around getting the sear installed than the pin. Anyway love the trigger.

This video helped me a lot instead on buying the jig. Be warned you do risk damaging your frame if you do this method. However, I followed Scotts instructions and tips. I easily got the pin out but putting it back in was a pain and I slightly damaged my frame behind the takedown lever. however the takedown lever hides the damage so it looks normal.

Just an afterthought, regarding the cracked frames, maybe the tape roll is to soft allowing the frame to flex and crack ??? I used a granet counter top and the armors block is hard plastic and a small steel hammer. Pin came out after a few good hits , maybe I'm just a lucky one though...
@charleslowrey9309
@charleslowrey9309 5 лет назад
I am thinking the same thing. To much flex. I used a piece of yellow pine stud on the slab. Drilled a 3/4" hole in the 2x4 so I could drive the pin out the rest of the way. Supported the frame better.

Put the frame in a vice against the armorers block and a small punch or pin and close the vice to push it out. 😂

Jeebus my pin was IN there. I have a rock solid workbench and quality punches, i used a gunsmithing hammer increasing strength of single steady blows, then moving up in hammer weight, and that thing wouldn't move a nanometer. Any more and i was busting the frame. Got so frustrated and didn't want to break the frame, I bought their jig AND a 1 ton arbor press, and it took a lot of force with that! but damn i finally got it out. Arbor press like $70 at HF. Much cheaper than a new pistol, and now i have another tool, win win. TL;DR Get an arbor press and possibly their jig if you pin is really stuck in there. Don't ruin the frame hammerin on it.

I Cracked my frame as well, I felt confident going in as I work on cars and with tools everyday so I let that pin have it from right to left, as soon as she loosened, it cracked, the problem I think comes from no support on the frame itself when trying to drive the pin out, which apex's new tool will and should fix, also I'm thinking some 509s are tighter tolerances than others. I called FN and I'm getting a new frame for about $150-170 so I'm doing that and doing it right this time.pleade note that you will obviously have a new serial number. Mine was a 509T btw (Edit :solution below)

While you drive the pin back in use you have to kind of reverse setup the armorer's tool to get the pin back in, do not attempt to just punch the pin in with a hammer and no armorer's plate, slow taps at first to make sure everything is lined up, triple check, then slowly tap the rest of the way in

Email from apex Let us install your FN trigger for you Apex Tactical Smith & Wesson - Glock - CZ - SIG - Walther Apex Offering FN Install Assistance For those of you that have tackled the disassembly of the FN 509, FNS or FNS Compact, and run into the challenge of removing the Forward Un-Locking Block Pin without any success, or have decided to not even try it for fear of breaking your pistol, we have some options for you. We’ve torn apart 50 some FN pistols through the R&D process leading up to the release of our new Action Enhancement Kit, and all without breaking a single frame. So, when it comes to the disassembly process we’re kind of the leading experts outside of FN itself. But how does that help you? Option #1 - Use Our New Installation Tool We are finishing the design and manufacture of a new fixture to hold the FN frame for pin removal. This fixture will secure to the frame and align a set of holes to guide a pin punch onto the pin to aid in the prevention of damage to the frame. Once these are final we will go into production and make them available for sale. However, we will also have some available as loaner models which we plan to distribute for free to a few online groups. We’ll ship one to the first person on the list and from there on the user forwards the fixture to the next person on the list in a pay-it-forward kind of scenario. Option #2 - Have Apex Install It For You If you still want Apex to install your FN trigger kit you will be able to ship your pistol to Apex. We have two pricing options for shipping your gun, and a third option for locals, but first the most important thing to remember is this: Regardless of your chosen method of shipment, all customers MUST contact Apex Customer Service to setup a sales quote prior to shipment of any firearm to us. The first option is to ship directly to Apex via a common carrier (FedEx or UPS). This option is going to be expensive. FedEx and UPS policies dictate that a pistol must be shipped overnight each way. In most cases, we’re finding the charges to be over $140 each way. The second option, which is the least expensive, is to ship your pistol through your local FFL. An FFL can legally ship a pistol via the United States Postal Service (USPS) with some minimal additional paperwork. Your FFL will have to determine what to charge you to ship your firearm to and receive it back from Apex. For our part, Apex will charge a flat rate of $35 to return your pistol to your FFL via USPS Priority Mail in a Flat Rate box, with $1,000 insurance and Signature Required. The third option, for those of you local to Apex, meaning you are in or near the greater Phoenix Valley area of Arizona and within driving distance, please contact Apex Customer Service directly to make your arrangements. Before you decide which process you want to go with - and before you contact Apex Customer Service - please review the complete details and overview of our FN Installation Assistance service. We have also prepared a document for you to share with your local FFL if they are unfamiliar with the United States Postal Service’s shipping process. Regarding Labor Charges For the time being, Apex will not charge customers for installation of Apex manufactured products into their FN 509 or FNS series pistol. I just wish I could find a replacement pin but anywhere I can find them listed is sold out... I haven’t had any problems with it walking out yet but it would definitely be nice to have a fresh one for peace of mind. Great video and I’m really happy with the trigger! one thing I wish was part of the kit is a stronger trigger return spring though. It’s not bad but I think it could be better. @apextactical
@apextactical Год назад
Yes and no. The Gunsmith has to absolutely follow the instructions on how to get that pin out. The greatest mistake we see is not placing the fixture on a hard enough surface. It needs to be on a Vise Anvil, over a table leg or on the concrete for the shock wave to travel through the pin and get it to move.
