Great vid! I'm not trying to be critical of this video as it's obviously been very helpful to many, but I've got a few suggestions that I think may help improve this process. As always, YMMV. Here's what worked for me: Use a 12" or longer piece of 1/2" threaded PVC pipe (often sold as riser pipe), insert threaded end into seal area, and then lever it out, using the edge of the seal bore as a fulcrum point if necessary. The threads bite right into the rubber and make removal a breeze. It took me about 10 seconds to remove my seal, and I didn't risk damaging anything by using metal tools. This method will also be easier if you are working underneath the vehicle, and not on a bench. As for installing the new seal, I'd try to avoid hammering it in directly. Here's how I installed mine: I placed a small piece of 2x4 on top of the seal and tapped it with a rubber mallet. Easy. Even pressure over edge of seal and minimal risk of warping it. Regardless of how you do this, good luck!

Nestor, your new seal you have should be exactly what you are removing. The old seal you remove should look exactly like the new one you have in your hand. I have never seen an all rubber transmission filter seal, they always have a metal ring connected to the rubber. If all you have removed is rubber, then there is a metal ring in there that needs to be removed as well. There should be a lip on the seal that you can take this tool here amzn.to/3NjXO41 and hold the chisel parallel to the ground on the lip and start tapping to drive the seal inwards, not up but in. Once you get it in far enough where you can use this amzn.to/3XiGhOl grab ahold of the seal clamp it tightly and start pulling it out. If you have any questions feel free to send us pictures to sweetprojectcars@gmail.com and we will help you as much as possible my friend. Not so straight forward if the seal is recessed deep inside the transmission. Did this job on a GM6L45 in a BMW yesterday. Only way to do it without a special seal removal tool, is to remove the valve body first. And then it was easy to use a chisel as described. Thanks for the tip though.

@@SweetProjectCars But you probably have done it many times, have all the right tools and have been trained on it. We poor schlubs out here are amateurs. We may never do this again. We don't need it to be perfect. Just good enough for it to run again. If I had known it was going to be nigh impossible, I would have left it alone. As it is, I could not get the new one into the hole and we ended up using 6 rubber o-rings and some Teflon tape. I am hoping mine doesn't get sucked into the gears. What I think needs to be explained about this part is that it is usually pressed into place when the tranny is being rebuilt. But when the car is on jack stands and you are on your back with fluid dripping on your face it is hard to do. And you know that is how most people who see these videos on the 4L60E will be doing this procedure. Am I right or am I assuming too much?

They did away with the positive bolt on seals because they WORKED! And engineered this problem pron design for the same reason they;"GM", re engineered the main bearing Tang's placement on the 350 vortec too easily spin out of place should you aware or un aware run out of oil pressure,, too SPIN THE OIL FED ROD BEARINGS,,. What happens if you gouge the aluminum bore the it sits in?
@SweetProjectCars
@SweetProjectCars 6 лет назад
Brian Hondel well this is something you don't want to do of course...but if you do then you may have to replace the entire pulley.

Not exactly the answer I was looking for. I appreciate your quick response tho. I was able to set the new seal and its real tight as is the filter and the truck runs great. Hoping i dodged a bullet

Brian Hondel I was just being honest, and of course, if the gouge is not too deep you should be ok :)

Please do a video on removing the tranny drain plug of a 2002 chevy suburban 1500 5.3. it's in alot of models and years. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about! and the P.I.T.A. it can be because of the rubber gasket good ol ' Gm engineers came up with.

OH I KNOW THE DRAIN PLUG....UGGG lol I will do a video of just that as we have a yukon sitting out here now...but, what I tell people is just replace the pan they are like 30 bucks on ebay for an OEM. then put anti-sieze on the plug so you never have to deal with it again.

Sweet Project Cars LOL, I was pretty sure you'd know exactly what I was talking about! my first encounter was "Supposedly a quick drain and fill" well after screwing up the plug, it being a Sunday, I had to remove the pan, drill out the plug, luckily AutoZone had a drain plug. So I took the opportunity to change the filter and seal. And have the truck back to the customer on time! Definitely antiseize went on the new plug! Thank you for your videos, time and expertise!!!! I greatly appreciate it!!

lol...that is almost play by play for a experience we had...those plugs are a real BEAR!
