Oh that's interesting! I've never seen anyone use olive oil for this and it seems to work really well. Thanks!

Hi Susan. The best way to remove stains from your plastic palettes is rubbing their stained surface with toothpaste on a paper towel. Then remove the toothpaste with a wet towel and the palette's plastic will look like brand new. The toothpaste prevents watercolours from beading on the mixing surface and sterilizes also the palette so your colours won't get moldy. ( in case you live in a place with high humidity).

I've heard of this option too, but actually haven't tried it myself - though I'm sure it works well!

@@SusanChiang Hi again. Give it a try because it is the only one that works that well. I've tried in the process all the other methods, with the olive oil and the abrasive sponges etc but the toothpaste method is the one that gives the best results and retains the plastic of the palette in good condition. I use porcelain palettes in studio but the plastic folding ones are the best for outdoor sketching and it is the toothpaste that retains them in good condition even though mine are "ancient" to say the least! lol It is also a good method for preparing the ceramic palettes before using them because ceramic palettes come with some kind of polish on them in order to look sleek and shiny and there are chances to make the colours bead when you first use them. So it is a good practice to rub them with a bit of toothpaste before using them for the first time.

I have successfully used toothpaste. Any brand will do. Simply add a tiny dollop, rub with paper towel, and then wipe out with water and clean towel.

I'm not quite sure! I wish I did...I've never successfully gotten any of the "dirty" towels I use while painting un-dirty...

I've had equally good results... with toothpaste and an old toothbrush. If it's good enough for your mouth. It's good enough for the palette.
