I learned a new word - ingress. Another video said it's a good idea to repeatedly thump down on the middle part of the wiper arm, while lift up on the part nearest the nut. But I've not tried this yet. These videos are really useful - thank you.
Had a hell of a job removing all this. The bolts weren't hard to get off, but the actual wiper arms were seized onto the ridged rod-like things they're attached to, Took a lot of spraying with WD40, and pulling. Another video said to thump the middle of the wipers to aid this process but it didn't seem to help me. In the end after 1.5 hrs of spraying intermittently with WD40 & pulling, I had the idea to try some pliers. Opened the pliers, placed one arm/jaw of the pliers on the end of the rod and the other on the underside of the wiper arm and applied as much force as I could, it came off with a thud. What amazed me was that nothing was broken after all the pulling and hammering. Also I found I couldn't remove the plastic until I first unscrewed the panel visible on the far right at 1:50. This gives you some purchase to pull up and get the right hand side of the plastic out of the groove it's firmly suck in. And from there you can very easily pull the rest out. Was worried about putting it back in but that bit was easy in my case(and Im really pretty bad at this stuff!).
oh yeah and the punchline is: I couldnt even remove the ECU cos it was totally seized in. Didn't matter cos all I wanted to do was check the connections were ok but bothers me in case I ever have to get it out! One thing I've learned trying some of this stuff, these things sure aint made to be easily taken apart and put back together again. So all the more power to the people making these videos defying that intention.
Thanks mucho! My Bentley manual says nothing about the ECM/ECU inspection and or maintenance. The older factory manuals were a lot more in depth about the actual repair and maintenance practices via diagrams, illustrations as well as text based procedures.
Removing the ECM at the end is not that simple. You forgot to mention the clip of the left side facing the module that needs to be pushed left and then downwards in order to slide the ECM out.

GREAT NEWS. MY 2001 JETTA STARTED ACTING FUNNY,SPUTTERING. BATTERY NEEDED CHANGING SO I REPLACED IT. STILL SPUTTERED. I TRIED RESETING BY DISCONNECTING BATT CABLES. NO LUCK. THEN I FIGURED I WOULD PULL OUT ECU AND LOOK FOR DAMAGE. NO APPARENT DAMAGE SO I PUT EVERYTHING BACK. THEN I DECIDED TO JUST SEE IF ANYTHING CHANGED,ECU AND A LOT OF INDICATORS CAME ON. THEN I CRANKED IT AND NO SPUTTER ! NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT! DROVE DOWN ROAD AND IT RAN PERFECT. I AM ASSUMING BY DISCONNECTING THE ECU CABLES I ACTUALLY RESET IT AND DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT.I AM SO HAPPY. TRY IT!!!!!

cheers mate ive done a jetta tdi ecu once it would crank no start then i un hooked cleaned *carefully* and it started and ran like a monster lots of blue smoke just needed to runs again
I have a 2003 Golf TDI. As far as I know limp mode happens to TDIs. And what causes it is the N75 valve, which when it fails causes the turbo to stop. And diesels are not the fastest engines without a turbo. And that’s what I know.
First I wanted to say AWESOME video! Second could you give some advice before i attempt this just in-case it would be useless for me. I drove a 98 Beetle with an AEG 2.0 motor threw water and ruined the engine. My insurance company paid to have an engine put in. And the Mechanic ripped me off big time. Got the car back and the transmission does not communicate with the motor correctly and skips 2nd and overdrive. Car does not start after being driven about 10 minutes and then will restart after half hour. Found out he put a 2003 jetta BEV 2.0 motor in the car and did not change the ECU. The car is pretty much useless now. I was going to attempt putting in a Jetta ECU (buying off ebay) and then taking it to the VW dealership to get the ECU flashed. I took it to a transmission shop and they said it was a created problem. i hate to dump more money in the car if this sounds like an impossibility. I am a girl but do tinker with some repairs. I am gonna try this today, my wipers are doing whatever they want like, intermittent in off position and won't go off at all. Windows not working and indicators not working too. Hope it resets itself and it all works again. All fuses are intact and correctly placed. Great vid man thanks a bunch. Let ya know how I get on.
Most car ecm can be reset by taking both terminals off batter and touch them together for about a min. This will drain power to all the ecu system. Put them back one and drive your car so it can relearn how you drive

I have a damaged ECU and I need a replacement. Can I just swap it out with a 2nd hand one? 2014 Passat 1.6tdi is the car/model. The car sometimes starts and drives however other times it just won't start.
If anyone needs to replace their ECU in their VW Golf, then there is an easy way if you know a fair bit about electronics and you have a hot air soldering station. Once it is confirmed that there is a fault with the ECU itself (i.e. via VCDS software) then you can get a second hand one with the same model number as your old one. I got mine from eBay for about £25! Locate the 8 leg EEPROM chip on your old ECU. Remove this and put carefully to one side. On new ECU, desolder the EEPROM chip too. Solder EEPROM chip from old ECU on to new ECU. Put back in car and assuming you have soldered correctly, car will start first time and errors will be gone.
got 1.4 tsi 2010 golf diagnostic said ecm gone guna cost a bit has got go vw to code in etc and new ecm wud wot you said fix it second hand one as engine runs for a second then cuts out wont start
Before you consider transplanting your EEPROM, you should first confirm the error using VCDS or similar software. You need to know the exact fault code before going any further. Depending on this, and assuming fault definitely lies with ECU, then it's worth getting exactly the same model ECU from eBay and then transplanting your EEPROM chip. Much, much cheaper than getting VW to code a new ECU to your car.

Thank you SO much. I was in the proses of tearing apart the interior of my car to try to locate this bugger. I even have a computer program (Autodata), and it shows the ECU sort of "behind" the engine. So I though, it must be inside the cabin under the dashboard somewhere. Why on earth would they place the ECU under that plastic mould? Anyway, thanks a TON! Great camera work, very well explained, generally good audio, just a puff here and there. I Just thought I'd give you a review as well : )
BMAC VAGS Found it. Thanks again. Well, it's dark now, so I'll wait until tomorrow to check the connections. Had a weird bug with the car. It suddenly stopped, so I had it towed to the school where I work (vocational school, so some of my colleagues are car mechanics). Checked the fuel pump, spark plugs, and so on. Then I had the camshaft position sensor changed at a garage (it's behind the front engine mount, so it's a real pain to change) because it was next in line in the diagnosis. The called me up and said "we plugged the sensor back in, and the car started", but I told them to change it anyway. So, I pick up the car, soon after it stops. I unplug the sensor, plug it back in, the car starts fine. Stop, unplug, plug, start, rinse repeat. So I was advised to check the connectors on the ECU, but I couldn't find it : ) Are you a mechanic, or just an enthusiast?
BMAC VAGS I'm assuming you mean the mass air flow sensor? And should I just leave it disconnected and try to drive? But I'll check the ECU connectors tomorrow anyway now that I've removed the wipers etc.
hey bru im struggling to get my glf mk4 started wiring seems to be the problem espesialy where there is a couple wires sniped as it comes thrus the firewall i need a diagram of each wire to tell me where they go
Thanks, very easy to follow instructions! My Golf FourMotion keeps going into limp mode and the EPC & traction control lights come on. Then it starts just fine again after about 20 minutes! It's been suggested on the forums that there could be water getting into the CPU. Is this something you've come across?

If i buy a second hand with NOT axp will it work? Or if i buy an axp one, all my keys will be ok? So i buy one, replace the bad with the new one and ready for go? my left indicators keep staying on when i lock, unlock with central locking, its normally a case of unlocking and re locking to get it off but today it wouldn't go off! thought it may of been the hazard relay, pulled that out but didn't work.. would taking the ecu out fix this problem? has anybody got an easy fix for me? how much would this problem cost to get it fixed at a garage? any help would be greatly received!
What was it a door actuator? I am having this issue along with the dash says acc starting and a door that isn't open. Also no ac even though just repaired. Also driver door lock for key won't turn so very scared if remote gets programmed or needs a battery

You did have to right? What was your car doing that told you it was ecu? Also if reprogrammed yourself how and what program did you use? My dash is acting strang says acc starting but no acc on. Also says door open when it isnt

I have a 2002 glx v-6 automatic 4 motion passat. american steering g .. there is a wiring part behind the ECU unit that has been eaten by a mouse. - / looks like some sort of sensor - have to remove the wipers and top cover of ECU unit to reach it . bmac i got a 01 vw jetta 1.8 somehow my relays 100 and 428 is replace in opposite slots is 100 from left to right before it was 428 to right which is the right way . thanks bmac

Esteban Tapia Ecu's need to be coded or come complete with key and transponder. They are very specific, so get the right set for your car. You may also need an instrument cluster because the immobiliser is located in it.
Hi was taking the ECU out my car but I broke one of the clips I have the ECU connected back up but now my car won't start up the engine just keeps turning over. Do you know if this is because the clip broke I haven't change the ECU I just took it out to examine it. Can I replace the clip or do I have to replace the whole block? Thanks great videos
+Gerard Callaghan If you broke one of the connector plugs then you might have to put a new plug on. This is a time consuming and fiddly job. The best way to do it is by getting a new plug with about 12" of cable on it from a scrap yard from an equivalent car. Cut damaged plug off your car - join new plug to ends of cut cable by soldering and using heat-shrink tubing. cover this in suitable heat resistant material.
