I love this bike, but the Kenda tires that come on it are poorly made and don't last more than 10k miles. So - if you own one of these eventually you're going to need to replace the thing, and that means a $600 dealership visit to get ANOTHER Kenda tire put on it.. or a bit of effort and $120 to put a car tire on the bike that will last far longer.
The Spyder uses a standard J-channel car-style rim it's tires and the geometry of the trike means the rear wheel rides flat as the bike doesn't lean like a motorcycle.. so, if you can find the right size (15" rims aren't that common on cars anymore) you can put a better tire on than you get from BRP. It takes a little effort but it's worth it.
I chose a Kumho Ecsta AST - size 225/50R15
I'm not a mechanic, nor do I work for Can Am BRP or any dealership. Do your own research before following any advice in this video.
The opinions expressed within are my own.

Thank you......Excellent video! I am just waiting for our crazy Illinois weather to get warmer and then I'll be replacing my rear tire myself on my 2014 Spyder. Got to say, I love tinkering with this bike. At first it seemed working on these were intimidating, but the more hands on you have they easier they get. Thanks again for taking the time to make and share your video. Much appreciated.

Overinflation will result in excess wear in the center vs. the sides. I run no more than 25psi on my Spyder. Great video- good detail! Thanx!!!👍

Yep, true in general - I think I was running mid 20s on the Kendas - it definitely was a structural problem for me, not inflation

Really great video and perfect timing. I'm changing the tire of my 2008 Can Am spider. The video is excellent it's clear I can hear and see everything we talking about. The only problem having is getting the brakes to the proper position. Could use a video on how to put the brake bracket on properly and set the brakes to the rotor. May sound simple to others but I'm having trouble. Yes I'm going to a car tire after this tire. Motorcycle tires are junk. People tell me they get about 7000 miles which is a joke what you pay.. Car tires people told me to get and 15+ thousand miles. Thank you for the video also

I know what you mean - the positioning of that one bracket that drops off is tricky.. if yours is currently disconnected I'd like to help if I can with shots of mine.. email me at askdiydad@gmail.com and I'll help if I can

I had my Kenda replaced with another Kenda at 78,000 miles I have 94500 miles on the bike now. The tire is almost to the wear mark. I run 28 psi on the rear tire. I agree with the high labor cost and is why I appreciate that you made this video
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 года назад
That is an amazing amount of miles for a Kenda - about 10x the average from what I have seen in the forums.

Thanks for the video. I had the rear panel break on my 2009 Spyder and am going to have to remove the tire to get the the nuts on the left side. Had about given up but seeing this I think I'll give it a go.

How did you break the rear panel?

@@AskDIYDad From the looks of it someone before me must have run over something and it flew up under the fender and tire. There were rusty cracks where the bolts mount the fender and panels together. Rough roads in Illinois I guess did the rest. One side broke off completely and the other has a nasty crack. Going to take them off and try to tig them back together because new ones are almost $300 each!

It would be nice if you continued filming from the beginning to the end like others blogger. So, its better to use the regular tires? Thank you for sharing with us.

I do everything handheld and have personally not really cared for the wasted time watching somebody loosen a bolt - unless I’m trying to prove “you can do this start to finish in 10 minutes” etc.. but I appreciate the feedback! My personal experience with a car tire instead of the Kenda on the rear was extremely positive. Better ride, better traction.. there are a bunch of threads about this on the Spyder forums where riders compare longevity and what brands they liked and didn’t - I’d recommend SpyderLovers.com for more info

There are some pretty good online communities out there that I am a part of that are great for technical advice for anything that you can service yourself - Spyderlovers.com is one that I am a member of - there are also Facebook owners groups specific to the various Spyder types where you may find answers to a lot of the things you could run into.

Don't forget to install the metal bushing between the rear pulley and wheel. I didn't see it in the video

I plan on replace the belt on my bike. Do you have any info of how to change the belt? I guess I may not need to take the rear wheel off for belt replacement. Thx
@zyonsdream
@zyonsdream 3 месяца назад
Why would you pull the hub apart just to change the tire? You can easily break the bead and pull the tire off with the pulley and brake disc left in place. On the F3T that I have, it’s easier to just pull the muffler off the pipe to get the axle Remove the caliper and muffler Loosen the axle nut. Lift the rear of the bike Pull the axle out. Slide belt off the pulley. Pull tire out from under the bike and change tire. Put the tire back under the bike Place belt over pulley Slide axle in Reinstall axle nut, caliper and muffler This leaves critical bolts (like your lower shock bolt untouched.

Setup on the F3 is a bit different in the rear than the older ST. As to the hub, i had a shop mount and balance the tire and they requested it be removed

There are zero differences on how the wheel dismounts on any of the Spyders. In fact, there is pretty much zero difference on how the wheel dismounts compared to most Harley Davidsons. Access the caliper and remove it, pull the axel, push the tire forward and pop the belt off. I personally jack up the rear with a jack under the catalytic converter to get enough room to pull the tire out due to the panniers and rear mud flap. Put said tire back under the bike, put the belt on the pulley. Slide the axel back though as you line the wheel up. No need for a belt alignment because you never moved the adjusters. I’d find a new garage to balance your tire too. I used to take my wheels to shops and I’ve never once been told to remove the hub. How else would you balance the assembly with weights if the hub wasn’t on the rim? Personally, I use tire beads on anything that doesn’t take a tube. They have never failed me and eliminates the need for any tire shop.

The tire wear is definitely due to over pressure 22 psi is correct also spyders use automotive tires stock there is no such thing as a flat tread mc tire. The only difference is brand. Kenda is not very good and life is poor especially overinflated also the belt should run a bit loose which will promote longer life and bearing life also. This video is pretty good and the process goes really well with a table lift. About 1 hour once you do a bunch

I was running 18 - 20psi on that tire. It wasn’t overinflated in my case, I obviously can’t speak to the others. The replacement tire was more stable under acceleration and far better in the rain than the Kenda. Again, I can only speak to my personal experience though

Hi I am getting ready to change tires on my rs. Yes I can take them off and take them somewhere for mounting. My question is do front wheels need a alignment or adjustment. Thanks Steven
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 года назад
Just removing and reinstalling the front wheels should not, in itself, throw you out of alignment.. that’s not to say you don’t have a current alignment problem, however. The trick is finding a place that is set up to do a laser alignment on a trike. Forums like SpyderLovers.com are a great place for referrals etc for that in your area

According to Shawn Smoak this tire is about 50% worn. It is interesting that so many non tire experts seem to know more about tires than the tire manufacturers. :-)
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad Год назад
I can’t speak to that - what I can say is the ride on my Spyder with the old tire vs the replacement was a night and day difference in traction, especially on wet roads. So wear % notwithstanding.. the performance of the OE tire compared to the replacement, from my experience, made the replacement worth doing.
@susierebelryder492
@susierebelryder492 Год назад
@@AskDIYDad It alway is when you put a new tire on. Problem is many think the new and different tire is better because of it. Also cheaper car tires are not gonna give you the traction as they are made for much heavier cars not motorcycles.
