Renewing an immersion heater is a risky business using the correct tools and methods will show you how to lower that risk and take the job on. Using the wrong tools and methods could mean ripping the immersion boss off the top of the tank (it happens), or upon refilling the cylinder finding that you now have a leak from the immersion boss.

Thank you for this perfect 'how to'. I tried one of those thin pressed metal jobbies with a claw hammer and it just jumped all over the place and even if I could get a few good strong square blows nothing doing. So I bought a Monument 361T as you advised and three lump hammer blows and BINGO!!! £20 delivered from Amazon. Money well spent! The only thing wrong with this video is there is no ''SEND BEER TOKENS' link in the description. I am one very happy chap!

Thank You Sir.... I bought the spanner and it literally took me 2 taps to get it out. I bought the previous spanner you showed and I was there for over 30 mins and it didn't budge....Job Done. When someone gives you stats that says "I have been doing plumbing for 40 years and lost 2 tanks" that done it for me ;) Much appreciated. You saved us £180 for labour as opposed to the £18 monument spanner off Amazon.

Brilliant as ever you are the best on youtube Derek. Why you dont have millions of views is beyond me and how any idiots can give you the thumbs down is sad! My brother does his own diy and he is blind but when i mentioned you after doing a plumbing job he jumped up and down in excitement as he uses your videos to help him out as well. The first video i saw recommended using a blowtorch - you are the best sir!

Alan, my thanks for your advice regarding the use of the Monument Immersion Heater spanner. I`m 77 years old and our old immersion heater died last week over 30 years old and I tried using the flat ring spanner to remove it failed total rubbish then after advice purchased the box spanner again useless. Then I saw your RU-vid video advising the "Monument" I ordered the Monument from Amazon. And I put the Monument on the nut and the immersion moved on one tap from the lump. My thanks and I owe you a large pint. Bless you I am not a plumber just a pensioner trying to save some of his pension by diy.

great tip on the monument spanner. such a shame the modern tanks are made of such thin copper. nothing built to last, if anything built to be replaced and keep sales up.

great video...Im not getting any hot water... When I remove thermostat should it be wet because mine is bone dry? What way do you turn the gate valve to open...maybe the tank is empty. 🙂 I dont have a drain valve can I just shut the water off to the tank then run the hot tap tap until the tank empties? Any help would be great Thanks!!
@dereton33

The thermostat should be dry. Turn the gate valve anticlockwise to open. Opening the hot tap will not empty the tank.

If you had to choose a new cylinder for your own house, would you go copper or stainless steel?

In my experience those gate valves do not always close completely. - always a slight dribble. if you try to tighten further you run the risk of breaking the valve spindle. Can get messy!

Last time mine was replaced the plumber did split the cylinder, but managed to repair it by brazing the small break. It’d be interesting to see that done, for DIYers.

,Alan, I have watched your brilliant helpful hints on “Air Locks in hot water pipes” but I still have the problem. I have a two tap mixer in the bath and it comes out of one spout. It now piddles out. I have tried putting a flannel under the spout and opening the hot then the cold but after the initial rush of cold and a little warm the tap reverts back to its dribble. Any further advice would be most appreciative.

If your kitchen and basin hot taps are working ok, then it is not an airlock, but if they do not work then your roof tank must be empty and your tank valve is blocked and not filling the tank. If the other taps are working ok then it may be the tap itself, I have a video on how to fix that. If you have a hot water cylinder with an immersion and you live in a hard water area your hot feed could be furred up and blocked. Investigate the roof tank first. Al.

Please could you help? I have a top entry immersion heater, which was working fine for a long while. Leaving it on for a few hours would heat up most of the tank. Last week something has happened, and now it will only heat up about 6 litres of water then just runs cold. I could understand if it had gradually deteriorated from the element getting scaled up, or if it just stopped working altogether, but to suddenly drop off like this doesn't make much sense to me. Any ideas? thankyou
@dereton33
@dereton33 6 лет назад
If your immersion is a dual element type then the long element could be burnt out leaving just the top one going.
@carpii

that's what I did in the end. The element had corroded so badly, there was just a thin exposed wire in one place keeping the circuit even working. I'm surprised it was able to heat anything at all. All fixed now though, cheers

Hi how would you drain tank if it does not have a drain off and the immersion is at the top
@dereton33
@dereton33 5 лет назад
Shut off the gate valve on the cold feed, undo the nut on the pipework on top of the cylinder, (the vent and hot feed pipe) pull it out of the way of the tank by loosening the union on the other end of the pipework, (there will be a small amount of water when you pull it away). Cut a piece of 15 mm copper tube just a bit longer than the length of your tank, attach a hose pipe to one end of the pipe and run the hose outside, stick the copper pipe into the tank through where the pipe was, when it reaches the bottom of the tank pull it back out about 2 inches, go down to the hose and suck like mad, water will come out, just leave it running until the tank is empty. Takes about half an hour.

I replaced the element in the top of my tank last week. The old split corroded one was 14” so I replaced it with like for like, I have since read that you should not us this size in the top of a tank. Should I consider changing it again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@dereton33
@dereton33 5 лет назад
Yes it should be 27 inch one.
@dave1976lyons
@dave1976lyons 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! Is a 27” required purely so it heats the whole tank? Would it be dangerous for me to keep the 14” for the short term? I’ve watched a fair few of your uploads and along with your advice, they are greatly appreciated.
@dave1976lyons
@dave1976lyons 5 лет назад
dereton33 is that for safety reasons or because the 27 inch will heat the whole tank?
@ShadowzGSD
@ShadowzGSD 5 лет назад
@@dave1976lyons my experience says both, i have been out to boiling tanks because the 14" ones have been fitted in the top with the stat turned up too much, the problem is they are the same size but doubled over concentrating the heat in the top of the tank. the 27" one heats up a greater area. having said that they now have 2 thermostats in so it should cut out before it boils. i would still put the correct one in though if it was me.

Yes, quite a good video, however the monument 361T is too shallow and will not reach the immersion heater on an Elson Coral E thermal store. So the only alternative is to use a box spanner with a tommy bar, the type that Alan says do not work. Mmm, where does that leave us? At a guess, buying the more expensive heavy duty box spanner type with tommy bar such as a Draper and make sure it DOES work. The only alternative is to remove the panelling (held on by pop rivets) then the insulation behind the panelling in order to get the momument 361T to fit. A major undertaking and not recommended.

Hi Al. On a similar subject, I am planning to fit a Danzey flange in a few days (when it arrives in post from BES), for a shower pump. Tank is 20 years old, and has male thread. Am I likely to have problems getting the vent pipe off? Should I start putting WD40 on it now? Bit worried the collar will break off, looks like it's just brazed on. And what about sealing the new flange - just a washer, or PTFE as well? Many thanks.
@dereton33
@dereton33 9 лет назад
***** The vent pipe usually comes away ok, if not, a bit of heat from a blowtorch will do the job. WD 40 will do nothing and is a waste of time. The new flange just has the fibre washer but do smear it in boss white, do not use PTFE tape. Good luck with it .

Do not use it any more until you get the immersion heater changed, it is dangerous and burning the wires out.
