Thank you to everyone for the well wishes! I am maybe 80% of normal now. Had to film this is short segments so I could rest in between, but I did it! Totally failed to record the part where I replaced the cork between the glass and the gauge assembly. Sorry about that. For those asking why I used cork instead of neoprene- It is because the gas in California eats the neoprene much quicker than cork.

@@arnoldleighty9078 The fordor seat adjustment is in the middle of the seat about where your ankles are. If it is adjusted back as far as it will to and you want more, unbolt the seat rails and drill some new holes farther back. Mount the seat rails farther back, reinstall the seat. Bingo!

When I had just acquired my car, the gas gauge started leaking. Replaced the gasket, switched to the cheaper fuel with 10% Ethanol in it... Now the 2nd gasket (to keep the glass sealed) started leaking. Turns out, somebody made their own gasket from rubber, not cork. Always fun to sit in the cab, wrenching on the fuel gauge, with petrol fumes slowly entangeling your brain... Glad to see you back up and running, Paul :)
@ModelA

I failed to record the part where the glad to gauge gasket gets replaced. FAIL! Sorry about that. It helps to point a fan into the car and keep both doors open, but it still just isn't quite enough.

Thanks for the video. The tips about polishing and pairing were very helpful. However, after reinstalling my gauge I was surprised to see gas leaking like crazy. I pulled out my red book and discovered there are two gaskets not mentioned in the video. The star shaped retainer can be removed from the assembly, which allows removal of the glass and metal washer. There are cork gaskets in there that should be replaced while you’re doing this project. It also allows more complete cleaning of the glass.

Back in the goodle days, around 1954, I had a Model A, and I loved it. Alas, had to sell it when I went overseas. It used to stall for some reason, until I figured out that gasoline was slopping over when the tank was full, and running down the steering column, thus shorting out the wiring and stalling the engine, until the gasoline evaporated (about 15 minutes). I cured it by wrapping the wires with fiberglass tape, but I have always wondered how the gas was spilling over in the first place, although I had discovered that the problem occurred right after I filled the tank. There is a fuel gauge, I realize belatedly, and the seal surrounding the fuel gauge must have been faulty. I wish I had seen your video back then!

Regarding gasoline some places sell non-ethanol gasoline. Conventional or Recreational (both 90 octane non ethanol). I've bought 60 gallons for antique equipment to be stored Nov. thru April. Costs about $1/gal more. Well worth it . Treating E-10 to remove ethanol reduces volume by 10%, another 10% of treated gasoline is lost to being sure no treatment water gets into gas tanks. Next summer's plan is to run non-ethanol gasoline in antique equipment.

@aserta

3:50 if you have two flat pieces of metal, you can use them to roll wire or pipe and make it straight again. You simply take the two pieces of metal, as if you'd want to rub them together two grit stones to make them flat again, and put the wire between them with the bent section that you want to straighten out. Rolling the metal back and forth with the wire between makes it straight. This can be used with fuel pipe as well. Pressure should be applied as needed, obviously, with pipe you don't want too much pressure.

Nice video. My problem was that the nut was so tight that I never was able to remove it, So I lived with a sunken float for 20 years. I recall having a 4-foot extension on the tool, and lifting the end with a chain hoist while rapping on the nut with a hammer (a plumber’s trick), and succeeding only in distorting the car’s body a little.

Oh, man! THat sucks. I presume you tried penetrating oil, etc. Next suggestion is heat, but that comes with its own dangers.

Sir another great video, was wondering if you have a video on cleaning the tank out and how hard is it , thanks
@ModelA
@ModelA 2 года назад
I don't, sorry. There are many different methods, and it depends on how bad the tank is. This one had surface rust, so the scrub pad did a good job.
@scottmagyar

@@ModelA lol, can you actually get a scrubbing pad into the tank, and if so how long does tht Method work. , thks

Yes. How long? Until someone abandons it and it gets water in it again.

Paul, just filled my tank today, and it reads "O". I'm going to use my wooden dip stick until I get parts and bravery to fix it. Thanks for showing us how to do it. Mendal Yoho

10 gallon tank, wow. Didn't think it was that big. How many miles can you expect to get out of a tank of fuel in stock configuration? With the "overdrive" unit? I'm thinking about getting one to dialy in the summer here in Michigan, but I do drive 90 miles a day for work, all two lane county back roads.
@ModelA
@ModelA 2 года назад
Actually, it is an 11 gallon tank. It just took 10 gallons to get over the gas gauge. At 20+ MPG, that gives you around 220 miles range. My sport coupe gets around 23-25 MPG, so even more range.
