Super Alloy 1 contains cadmium. While filling a sizable hole in thin steel, we demonstrate how to tin steel to create a bonding surface.
Keeping your flux bottle close to your project, dip your rod into the flux and apply it around the hole.
You don't need much preheating when it comes to thin steel. Broadly heat around your work area, bringing your metal to 350°F. Tin the steel around the hole before bridging the gap. Tinning is merely rubbing the rod back and forth on the steel to break the surface tension. The solder may not grab the steel if the metal is too hot. Pull the torch away and continue to rub the rod on the metal's surface until the steel starts to cool to the correct melting temperature of the Super Alloy 1 rod. You will see the rod grab to the steel and create a thin layer of solder. If this occurs, the steel is tinned. Rubbing the rod in small circles around the hole while sparsely heating will help bridge the gap across the hole. Let's try another technique, heating the rod to the plastic range or soft stage. The plastic range is when the solder is neither a solid nor a liquid. You can coil the rod upon itself in this stage and push to coil across the hole to bridge the gap.
Of course, you could always use a backing plate, so the solder doesn't fall through, but I wanted to demonstrate how to bridge the hole without one.
If the flux turns black wipe it off with warm water or add more flux to the heated area.
The torch we used in this demo was adjustable, meaning I could have used less heat for easier repair. But after talking with tons of customers over the years, I've noticed most people's torches aren't adjustable. So I cranked it up for the demo.
The Super Alloy 1 is a multi-metal solder so it would have worked on an aluminum door as well. The Super Alloy 1 is unique in the soldering business.
The Super Alloy 1 is used in body shops across the country for steel, aluminum, and pot metal repairs.
