(this is a re-upload of a previous video that had sound issues)
Greg demonstrates how to remove the toilet flapper valve and shows the many kind of flapper models, so that when you go to the hardware store to buy a replacement you can be sure to get the right one.
Also shown are common mistakes made that will affect flush performance and water use.

Thank you, Greg. This helped me immensely. I was able to fix a toilet that I needed to hold down to flush, by changing the flapper and lever, and adjusting the chain just right as you demonstrated.

Thank you sir for your flapper expertise. I needed to replace the flapper in the toilet because it was leaking. My girlfriend got me one but just opened it and no directions. I installed it but it closed too fast. After watching many videos nothing worked until I came across yours. I had the Frankenstein ears but didn’t cut off the ring til you told me to. It works perfectly now. Thank you so much!!!!

Good warnings, I watched this before hitting Home Depot to get a replacement flapper, now I can avoid going back to get the right part a second or third time.

Greg - you're awesome! I moved into my place in January and had a leaky flapper with ghost flushing every 5 minutes. It was driving me crazy. I replaced the old flapper with a spare one - but the replacement flapper had a ring and the holes for the Frankenstein posts - my mistake - I used both the ring and the holes. After watching your video - it worked perfectly. You had also made a quick comment on chain length - that also made a huge difference. Before, I had to hold down the lever to get a whole flush - now it's just a push of the handle. My next step was to call plumber if this didn't work. No need to now (thanks to you) You saved me time and money - Thanks for educating me on this. Much appreciated. (Oh - and sorry about the lengthy note)

Thank you for this comprehensive view of toilet flappers. I thought there was one basic type, and I realize now there’s quite of few differences between them. Most products are deceptive as they advertise “will fit most toilets” and my Toto ended up being non-standard.

Thanx soo much. Even 2 veteran guys at the hardware store did not know all this great detail. It was all trial and error, trying and bringing back 4 different flaps. Mine still leaks a tiny bit like I can hear the toilet make little burps. 3 weeks ago I awoke to 1" of water in my little house and only bath, it was a disaster. Had to rip out the vinyl floor tiles and dry it out for a week, so now those little burps make me paranoid. Thanx again to all.

@FreeUSA1776 I do not teach people to do my job, I teach them to do their job. Their job is to maintain their home and conserve water. Someone searching to DIY is not calling a Plumber. I have had to fix too many poorly done jobs. If they want to do it themselves they will and have a right to. Just do it right. I teach Plumbers too. Many jobs are far more involved than people think, they see what is required and call a pro. (sometimes). I do not teach homeowners to do Gas lines.

My Flap was old and it wouldn't lift up and was breaking my toilet handles, cause they weren't strong enough to lift it, well bacteria broke down the Flap material and it wasn't lifting so.... I grabbed some good old Pumice Stone and filed around and under the lip of the flap and whala, it now works fine, some time in the future i'll replace it, but for a quick fix it worked beautifully !

Duffy, The slack needs to be short for the flush lever to fully lift the flapper completely. Too much slack will allow the flapper to pull back down on flush valve seat closing the flapper and limiting the flush volume of water. When excess slack is present, the flush handle needs to be held down longer to let the flapper become buoyant and float up for full timing and volume of water to fall into bowl, thus causing siphon to evacuate the bowl waste.

I have changed several, but I moved into a new place, and the flapper doesn't snap on, it has tight loops that the tabs go through, I can't get it off, tried prying it with pliers, can't get it off, do I need to change the whole valve?

I have a 3" "Frankenstein" red rubber flapper. It's seen about 8 years of service. For whatever reason, the flapper now wants to re-seat too quickly. As you recommend here, I have about one link of chain slack (ie: It's fairly tight and allows for a complete and full flapper lift). I imagine that the rubber Frankenstein attachment is torquing too much and not allowing a period of buoyancy.. Is this typical? The remedy is to hold the flush five seconds, but my wife is tired of it ;-)

Our culture wants to minimize the forbidden "poo-po talk", but even as long or short I make these videos, more is needed to be explained ... see the hundreds of questions following my videos...many are thanks, and I really value that, but many are questions because I was not complete in my presentation... I have two toilets leaking. A plumber came out and said its my flapper. Which I had already replaced on those toilets with a 'universal' one. Didn't want to pay him $75 to change my flapper. I do have one with the original flapper so I took that to Lowes to try and find one similar. I bought two and neither kept the water from coming into the bowl. What should I be looking for when I go back? The same size bottom piece (cone)? Sooo frustrated.
@ramonasplumber
@ramonasplumber 11 лет назад
Rachelle, Changing out flappers is not as easy as it seems, sometimes...The $75 for a flapper changeout is very competitive and might be needed. The flapper needs to be on the flush valve correctly and the flush lever and flapper chain slack and position need to be optimum. The flapper seat needs to be free of debris and perfectly smooth. The flapper should be factory made, not a china mfgr. spin off... "made to fit" If you take a picture of the toilet tank insides w/o water in it.

Just get a flapper that is adjustable that does not use a float or a plug at the bottom the best kind of a adjustable flapper is a dial

If it is a normal flapper, the 2 arms that pivot on the side pegs then one is likely not on all the way, if this flapper has the optional round connection between the 2 arms, that needs to be cut off as per installation instructions, If you want to send me a picture of the flapper on the flush valve I can assist more. or call me, 760-788-2889

I care about my profession, that is why I am a Certified Trainer for IAPMO. The Plumbers that want work in repair service calls can get it if they want to. I turn down calls almost everyday. I have so much, I cant do it all. Just call the other Plumbers in Ramona and ask them if I send them work? I do. AAA, Jim H., Jerry, and so on.
