Understanding which toilet flapper to use and which not to use can save you money in the long haul. You don't need to worry about plumbing problems if you start with the right toilet flapper in the first place.

The shape of the flappers remind me of the Starship Enterprise from the original Star Trek,especially row 2,number three. Damn it Jim!

Thanks Bob! You do things with common sense, i.e. "Basics". There's a whole bunch of people like me, ignorant about things like these. Taking the piece(s) out, is the best advise.

Mine is an old American Standard with a small reservoir on top of the flapper. You have to be careful though because some of these have been sitting on the shelf so long they get hard and wont work.

I had to replace a flapper once because I wrecked the old one by using those toilet hockey pucks. I had no idea there were so many types. I just put one in, and it worked, sort of. You had hold the lever for a second to get the flapper to float, tho, or it would close right away. I'm sure it didn't help that it was an early "water saver" toilet with the plastic shield around the flapper.

Flapper can drive you INSANE! Every manufacturer has there own proprietary flapper and it drives me crazy. You can outfit a minivan with all the different styles.

I just replaced the flapper in my 🚽 a couple of weeks ago. But, everything in my apartment is standard 1970s fixtures, except for the oven, which they had to build this place around as the oven is from the early 1960s and the building was built in 1970. I think the toilet is a Gerber? I purchased 3 flappers, but I ended up using the standard “plus” merely because the plus has a longer life rubber. I realized that the tip of the metal where the hook hooks into (which is the inside part of the handle that goes inside the tank) had broken off. I simply moved to the next hole, not know that that provides a softer flush when I press the leaver so, that was nice to find out. Now, all I have to do is experiment a bit with the chain length as it sometimes gets caught under the new flapper, causing the flapper to not close. But, that’s simply enough.

for your chain problem, the coolest thing I've seen is some shrink tube or similar on the lower part of the chain to make it stiff, then it can't get under the flapper

@@l337pwnage OK, thank you! Now, I’m onto fill valve replacement. May not happen though. Im an apartment dweller. I know the 30 sec way of doing it. But, the knob on that spout, as is often the case, is stuck. So, I may have management come in to take care of it.

What if you don't have the original Flapper? The previous home owner cut one to length and attached it with wire ties. Sometimes it gets stuck and runs. None of the universal ones fit and I end up cobbling the old one back on.

So my old flapper was rubber and disintegrated to the point where I cannot take it to the store to match it. Any suggestions about figuring out which flapper to use?

My toilet is from the 1950's. have no idea the brand it is or what the original flapper type it was. Which one should I use? The first one you mentioned here?

1) How does one determine toilet flow rate (3.5, 1.6, gpm, etc)?2) I'm not sure whether the flapper is leaking (most probable) or the underlying fixture (screwed into porcelain) is leaking). Do you have a tip to determine?

BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks for responding Bob. I was lazy and didn't look at the markings at the top. It's a 1.6gpb. You'll love this one though. after ensuring that my flapper held tight (overnight), I wanted to be darn sure and did a color dye test (because the clean tank water level had dropped an inch. I eventually decided the old flapper (float) mechanism simply maintained a higher level (water mark). I then released the tank water to make the final setting. Guess what? The chain decided to explore the clean bowl tank. It caught some porcelain. After half an hour of trying to fish the hook out...I decided that my old hook would suffice. So I yanked as hard as I could (intending to break the hook). I succeeded! I then hooked everything back up and dialed in my red flapper to min-flush. I test-flushed...and everything was BEAUTIFUL for HOURS....until the next day...when I discovered my bathroom flooded with water on the floor. Why? Apparently my yanking on the hook which had caught a whopper of a porcelain-fish loosened the seal of water-tank to toilet bowl (the plastic screw-seals were compromised). If I were a plumber, I would probably commit suicide within a month ;-)

Not really! I've been doing this since I'm 18 years old, headed toward 66! Regards and thanks for your question. Bob.

Measure the tank width and depth and how high the water is. Next turn off the inflow valve to the tank. Flush and see how much the water level drops. Multiply these three numbers to give you a volume in cubic inches. Find an online calculator to convert cubic inches to gallons. Done.

I need a new flapper for my toto drake toilet, ST7437 which one should I get, my toilet leaks, but another thing it does is, just as the tank is about to be finished filled after flushing it makes this high pitched noise, what is this? I have to keep my water turned off, not only due to the leak, but if I keep the water on, every like couple minutes it just start making that high pitched noise, plumber is no good! Still has not called back after 2 weeks! I know I probably can fix the leaking at least, but which flapper, so many!! Ugh! Every time I look up the number, I can't find anything! I even chatted with someone on website & said we don't have a number, cause they are generic, so then how do they know it will fit my toilet? Sorry for ranting lol, of course it's always something! Lol.. thanks
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 7 лет назад
The high pitched noise is most likely coming, the fill valve inside the tank located generally to the left. Could have dirt in it hard to tell via the internet. It could also be coming from the water supply valve that is feeding the toilet. Should be looked at by a Pro. That number is not coming up in search, is your toilet a 1.6 gpm Drake or a 1.28 gpm model. They use different flappers?

I moved into a house where the previous idiot tenant put cheap universal flappers in. They don't work so I don't have one to take in. 🙄 this was no help. I just call the manufacturer

Tired of having to replace the flappers about once per year. I would pay double for one made with a higher degree of quality. IMO they are all too rigid. A thinner rubber gasket would better seal to the drain.
