The square plate above the Steering Gear is held on by 4 bolts ( 2 on each side) and the Pedal that has a Star washer holding it and you can Drop the whole section down after you remove the small steering gear. It will also allow you to Clean Out all the Junk that builds Up on top. I find it much easier and really if you have to lay under on your Back. Otherwise I think your video's are Great, You're a Good Mechanic for sure!

Well Done Sir. Note the Pinion is worn on one end of the teeth. Drill out the {round/smooth end ) down to the splines and invert the gear. Make sure Sector gear teeth lean downward. Cut out a good piece of the old gear and have it welded on top of the new one at the Centre of the Sector to double gear contact.. Works great. Use a Bronze Oil-lite bushing on the bottom of the shaft instead of the plastic one.

Thanks Dean, putting back the nuts for the gear plate bolts were challenging for me but the job is done and now on video. I have been waiting a while for one of these to come in. Just remember to keep the front wheels at maximum pressure (normally 14psi) to keep the stress off the steering gears and they will last a long time. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Another very helpful video. My steering on my D130 is suddenly difficult to turn this year. I lubed the xercs on the front end, which helped a little bit, but it still seems a bit stiff. Now that I know what to look for I'll pull the deck and see if everything is aligned properly. I am guessing lubing the rack and pinion would be a great way to get dirt stuck in there.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
Correct, do not grease the gears. Grease the front axle. Check all of the gears at the bottom steering column and a big one that most people miss when you say “it’s hard to steer”check the front tire pressure!!! Normally max on the front are 14psi. I put them at 16psi to help the steering and I do know that tires may look inflated but when you check them there normally all low unless your performing regularly maintenance:)

Hey Johnson's SE, This is a great video show how to replace the steering part! I have a JD D110 (6yrs old) and I will most likely be doing this work to mine in the next couple of years. thx, tommy
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
Hi Tommy, Thank you! Just a tip, Keep your front tire pressure up to put less stress on the steering so you do not have to perform the job sooner then later. The customer that had this issue, had one front tire that was always going flat and I do believe it failed sooner because of driving it around on the flat front tire.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines

Thank you! No real need for any lubricant. They are designed to work without. The reason why most gears fail is due to low front tire pressure making the steering work very hard.

Question - Did you remove the gas & oil before hoisting that up ?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
If your hoisting the machine, No need to drain engine oil but I would recommend making sure there is minimal fuel in tank. I did not drain the fuel.

Honestly if you undo the four bolts holding the square plate that everything bolts to it’s simple to get to those nuts etc , I’ve just done it ,,,, on my back ,, also if you get the lot cheaper China versions think again ,, the metal hardening is rubbish they wear out in a matter of weeks ,,, go to John Deer shops expensive but there is a reason ..

Easier to just take the bottom plate off… only 4 10mm bolts, 2 either side. That way you can work the whole unit off the machine

Have a John Deere Sabre lawn tractor. Need the pinion gear replaced as the steering is loose. Where would I get the part as John Deere no longer has it. Machine is 20 yrs old
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
If you have the part number, search the internet. If that doesn’t work you may need to track down a used one off of a junked machine if you can fined one.

My Pinon is solid onto the shaft... tried to beat on it and a little heat. Any suggestions? TY
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 11 месяцев назад
It’s hard to give you that kind of advice and worrying that you may ruin the shaft but I have on occasions had to install the nut and then smacked the nut to get the gear to move. Also I used a lot of PB blaster which works very well. The heat will also help a lot. If it does not come off, you will have to figure out how to cut off the steering shaft out and replace it. I have been doing this over 30 years and never had to do that so I was suggest soaking with PB blaster as long as you can hold out, maybe soak it every few hours for an afternoon then try on the morning. Whatever works for you.

Have you ever come across a stripped steering shaft? I am trying to do this repair on my mower as I have bought it second hand and noticed sometimes the steering wheel will turn without moving the tyres, found your video and ordered the parts but when trying to undo the gear on the steering shaft I have noticed the previous owner has used the wrong nut on the gear (21mm) and it is stripped really badly and not done up even half way which is why the steering is playing up, have you ever come across this ? And if so how did you fix it ? Thankyou and love the videos 😁
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
You will need to either run a die over the threads after removing the nut or replace the steering shaft. I personally have never had to do that. If it was going out of my shop, I most likely would replace the shaft and nut just to make sure it is correct.

The engineering that went into this steering system were just poor. We have changed these parts 6 or 7 times in the last 5 years. Somes i get 1.5 seasons out of it and sometimes they wear back out within a month. It makes no sense. The gear doesnt sit deep enough into that rack and it causes it to slip. After a few times of slipping, its ruined. Ill be fixing it one last time and selling it. Not worth the hassle

I didn't even realize you are missing a hand until about halfway through, you made it look easy, I'm struggling with two hands. It just seems like there is too much play in the steering plate gear, but if u tighten it down or add a washer it barely moves, anyway great video, thanks.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
I’m glad it was helpful and I hope you figure it out. I was born without the hand so I know no other way. That alone is a blessing. Positive thinking will get the job done.
