A few days ago my dishwasher wasn’t draining water. I live in an apartment so the maintenance man came to fix it. He was here for over 7 hours and couldn’t fix it. He ended up installing a different washer from another unit and that didn’t fix the problem, it added a new problem, a weird grinding noise. I watched this video and FUCKING FIXED IT. It involved diving into my apartment dumpster to get spare parts from the initial machine, using a spoon as a screwdriver, and drinking a pint of vodka, but I did it! There was a piece of glass in the drain pump and that fan in the motor thing was broken into pieces. Amazing video. Thank you thank you!

Thank you for the video, it was helpful. In case you're still wondering, the purpose of that 'pin' you reference inquisitively and shave down @7:07 is more of a receptacle for a long cylindrical pin from the motor-side to keep the housing from spinning separately from the base/motor.

Great, thorough video. Thank you. I followed your instructions to the 'T' and was able to diagnose that the issue was the drain pump (opened it as you showed, and a couple ball bearings had come out of the bearing pack).... HOWEVER, this warning to your viewers about replacing the circulation pump:... ... my circ pump appeared to be working but I saw some residual coffee grounds and decided to pull the circulation pump to inspect it more carefully, and clean. Followed your instructions to remove the circ pump, "...it may help to wiggle and twist a little as you pull." I was gentle with the "wiggle and twist method" but the impeller snapped off at the underside because the O-ring for the lower disposer blade section was stuck in the sump housing, while the upper O-ring for the disposer blade cover came out freely. In this case, pulling just hard enough to bring the circ pump out, even gently wiggling and twisting a bit, allowed the impeller section (O-ring having less friction) to pull through the disposer blade cover (O-ring having high friction). I did manage to fix the impeller (description below), AND in the process came up with a safer way to remove the circ pump: ... ...with DW on its side, reach in the cabinet and push evenly on the impeller as you gently pull and gently twist (do not wiggle), and this will keep equal force on impeller and disposer section as the circ pump is removed. I ordered a new circulation pump, and while waiting for it to arrive did a repair to the old pump, and it worked fine (but chances are you'll need new O-rings). These steps to repair the broken off impeller (broken off at the axle and plastic bushing just under the impeller): 1. carefully reattach and align impeller blade; use a sharpie to mark the alignment for when you are gluing all together. 2. after you've made alignment marks, clean and gently scrape using an exacto blade the broken edges on the bushing 3. use a tiny bead of JB Waterweld epoxy (good for up to 300° and a 1300psi, into the inner bushing beneath the impeller (enough to fill in the space after the bushing is pushed down, but not enough to overlflow (so, a very tiny bead, like 1/8" round) 4. use JB steel reinforced two part epoxy with 4000psi and good for 500°f on the broken edges of the bushing 5. push the impeller back onto the circ pump 6. secure the impeller with a couple rubber bands crossed over the impeller to the bottom of the circ pump, and let it sit over night. 7. 24hrs later put a little steel reinforced on the outside of the bushing, and also over the screw and center mound of the impeller top screw, and before it dried sink a Phillips head bit into the screw so it you'll be able to access the screw if need be (this last step will help hold the screw into the broken bushing where it's threaded end is locked into the Waterweld. I left the repaired circ pump in the dishwasher and it held up for a few washes, but when the new circ pump arrived I swapped it for concern that if the old impeller did eventually break off small pieces of plastic or the screw might get in the pump and and possibly ruin it.

Ok, I just want to say thanks for posting this up! Because of your willingness to share knowledge, my dishwasher is now fully functional again!!! The morning started off with my wife telling me it wasn't draining water out of the bottom tub. Based on the discovery o your video, I was able to narrow the problem down to the drain pump. Excellent video. I have the same dishwasher (Kenmore) and same noise problem. The part number on the pump is 154843901 made by Johnson and this is the internal recirculation pump shown in the video. I see a few used ones on eBay for $25 and a new for $100 on Amazon. My experience with used items on Amazon is 50/50 if it new and sent back because of the wrong part or truly used with damage. I took the risk on Amazon a used (sent back new) one for $32. Think this pump would have lasted longer than 22 years but nothing last forever. Sad in our case the pump has a bad bearing so replacement was required. Note this uses T20 on the in the inside screws and to remove the pump (Not Allen wrench). I was able to replace this pump without removing the dishwasher from the cabinetry. Just need a T20 torx bit and a 1/4” wrench. Put an oven pan under the pump before removing for to catch the two cups of water that come out. If you are a pro this can be done in 15 minutes. Do not forget the dish soap as lubricate on the o-ring seals for an easy install and no leaks.

@Thecrazyeditor I'm not sick of it at all. That is possible. The impeller is held to the motor shaft by a flimsy tab that is expanded within a square hole by one screw. So it would definitely be possible for the square hole to become round, one side of the tab to snap off, or the shaft to strip out for some reason. Thanks for the compliments. Glad to help!

Very helpful! Thank you! For some reason the plastic lid-looking piece that covers the solid food waste disposal blade was not clipped into place. It was loosely moving around while the blade was spinning. Easy clip back into place. We also modified the housing for the blade as seen in the video as well, just in case. Now our mysterious obnoxious noise is gone - but now we have a tiny leak! This feels like a never-ending troubleshoot and fix-it journey.
@gurdiprooprai6453
@gurdiprooprai6453 5 лет назад
Just a headsup, the little plastic ring you modified by cutting isn’t used for anything other than holding the 2 plastic circular housing pieces together so that they don’t misalign while the motors spins. The other plastic side has a long rod that fits into this plastic ring on this side so that they spin together. So as long as the modification still holds that rod in place you’re good to go. I did the exact same procedure with great results, works much quieter now. Great video!

Thank you very much for your show. By following your instruction, I solved the draining problem of my dishwasher. It turned out there was some fiber debri build up in around the inpeller, but the main reason was the drain pipe is blocked by heavy grease. Amazing. We just took ours apart, found graphite leaking out like crazy. The tinker in me wanted to know how that pump worked and why there would be so much graphite - you answered all my questions. Added bonus, with some googling, I now know how a brush motor works. One side's brush is low enough, looks like the spring might not be giving the carbon enough push anymore... probably why there is pump failure. Thanks!

Had to use a 'cheater cord' to bench test the pump out of the machine to hear it.The dishwasher was only three years old but I decided to install a new pump. Wanted to buy from a local parts dealer instead of ordering online and pay shipping and wait. Was quoted $117 for the pump but was able to negotiate down to $100 when I told the guy I had seen them online for $89 and would rather buy from a local shop.Use a bit of liquid dish soap on the O-rings when installing them and just before inserting the pump into the machine. Works as a lube and goes in super easy.

Thanks for getting back to me with excellent tips from a pro! I sure appreciate it. I cancelled my Frigidaire dishwasher order and will be looking for a better brand this week. I also have a fairly new LG washing machine in New Mexico that was damaged when a realtor was trying to remove a chest freezer next to it. Looks like something hit the washer at one end in the back and now, the entire top comes off! Hope I can find a repair person to fix it so I can save it. Thanks for helping!

Thanks to your great video, we were able to fix our noisy dishwasher without having to buy parts. We found some plastic pieces in the grinder area plus lots of hair all over. I have no idea how hair got into the dishwasher - it was quite nasty.

THANKS! It turned out to be the drain pump that needed replacing. Your video was super helpful and gave me the confidence to "dig in." So awesome to find such a well made video on an appliance that looks almost exactly like mine. Can't say enough!

Thank you, you helped me fix our dishwasher that had basically lost water pressure. I ran it with the door open and it barely would spin the wands and didn't even have enough pressure to get the water out of the door. The main pump was all clogged up with who knows what (plus some plastic and hair) and the food blades had been coated in a mixture of hair and other things, rendering them completely useless.
