FINALLY someone talking about the dedication and patience you need for growing natural dreadlocks. I've been a loctician for 20+ years and you won't believe the mount of ppl who say, "I want natural locs but can you plz extend them because otherwise my hair will look so short and ugly?" Uhm NO. I grew mine from scratch and so can you. The "ugly"stage is teaching you something.
I was one of those that was scared to embrace them while they were short, and ended up braiding over them until they grew longer😆 But when they got past my ears, I just wore them out for maybe 2 months at a time, then put braids over them. Now they're past my shoulders after 2 years🥰
Why do people judge so much. If my natural hair is in my back and I loc and get shrinkage that doesn’t mean I need patience…. That means I didn’t have short hair before and don’t want short locs now.,.. 😂! Example my daughter never relaxed hair now her back at 16 got locs and it took 6 inches away… that’s a big difference… she handled it but I couldn’t get upset that she had concerns
No you ladies are not!!!! I’m 69 seven years of growing out my natural hair hair and being blessed finally to get loc’s but, age, meds ad life has changed my hair on its own accord.
I’m so glad I found your channel. I totally agree with what you said, when I first started my loc journey I just knew I was going to have some hang time. The shrinkage was real so real I almost started to cry. The loctician that installed my locs saw the disappointment on my face and she asked me if I wanted her to take down . In that moment I thought of my Grandma telling me as a girl that if I think I am pretty I’m pretty, no matter what level I’m on I just have to choose to accept this new level and embrace the new me. I’m so glad I did. It gave me a confidence i didn’t even know I had and I have a new love and appreciation for my hair now. Also thank you for the repair tip
Tried to the whole “natural journey, no “ugly stage” thing and after a few months said eff this and got loc extensions. I get compliments on my locs everyday. If you want to loc your hair and aren’t confident with it short, do what works for you. Every journey is different. Besides that, thanks for giving me the repair tip!
For me, I think if you don’t go through the short phase (which people call the ugly stage) you won’t have a connection with your locs. But hey if that’s what you like go ahead. And you’re most welcome☺️
I have been watching videos about loc care and just couldn’t see what they are really doing, I can see how you are rolling the loc between your fingers, thank you for making it easy to follow ❤
Just taught myself to fix my locs. I didn’t have too many but wanted to make sure I was doing it right and came across your video. I’m 3 yrs loc’d started and maintained by me. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you for being patient and explaining this step save me from paying $10 a loc just for fixing one also I would love to learn how to retwist my own hair I’ve had my loc for 9 yrs now and I absolutely love it…..
Thanks for the tips to repair my thinning locs. I bought me a needle today. I didnt want to add any fake hair to my locs so this is perfect for me. Ive never worn a headwrap, braids over my locs or wigs during my journey. I installed my locs myself 2 years ago & i started from short hair. Ive loved them from day one & never felt the need to conceal them. Embracing my natural beauty is big for me. Fake hair is sub par to my natural hair period. I felt beautiful when they were short & i feel beautiful now. I never bought into the "ugly phase" crap, all that is is ones perception of themselves/their hair. I tell myself Im beautiful, i tell my locs they are beautiful. Ive learned tho that ppl loc for for different reasons so embracing their locs from the beginning may not be important for them because its just a hairstyle for them & its fleeting. It has nothing to do with being on a spiritual journey or embracing their natural beauty & being creative with their own locs etc. I dont judge anyone, do with your hair what YOU plz but as for me & mine...bout that life baby.
This really works. I’ve been tying my thin locs. Thank you for sharing! I think dyeing my hair and 2 strand twist rubber band area cause my thin spots. Has gotten better since I’ve stopped dyeing my hair and getting 2 strands. Your my hero
Thanks so much for helping me find the missing piece in my life repair journey. I've been growing my own and have been getting really deep into repairing my locs, I just needed over little piece and you've inspired that, thank you ☺️
Wow I wish I saw this a long time ago lol 😆 but this is super helpful, thanks! update: I found that crochet needle and started to repair a few of my locs...this is a game changer! wow
I’m 4.5 years in and I also have weak spots from picking lint 🥴 I have also cut the whole bottom row of my locs but now I have one in the middle of my head and the week spot is about 3 inches up the loc- I can’t bring myself to cut it😅 thank you sooo much for this video! I will be trying this in a couple days when I was and retwist
Thank you so much for your knowledge. My locks are thin in places and wanted to learn how to repair myself as I started them myself and want to continue maintaining them myself without having to spend silky money! Thanks again ❤😊
Thank you! I just ordered a crochet needle off Amazon for my son's locs so he don't have to go to a loctician for things like this. He just went to a lady over the weekend but she skipped one that was thinning towards the ends of one so I'm going to repair it for him myself.
I started having some thinning when I started covering my locs for about 3 1/3 months when I was at work. Because my locs are long and wasn’t use to being put up daily for hours. Mannnn I almost flip out when I saw my locs start to thin. I was told not everyone can wear them covered all day I stopped of course but now I’m looking everyday at my locs like please fill back. They are doing good now it’s been 2 1/2 months since I stopped covering them I only cover them at night when I’m in bed. My locs seems to like that better. If you have any advice for me please let me know
Aw I feel your pain. I don’t cover my locs anymore because it’s uncomfortable for me and when I do cover them my bonnet or scarf comes off when I’m sleeping. I’d suggest not covering them and get yourself a silk or satin pillowcase. To help use rice water treatment or rosemary water. And for oil use the jamaican black castor oil with argon oil. That help me when my edges were thinning. Hope this helps.
Hey sorry for the late reply. Here’s the link 5 Pieces Dreadlock Crochet Hook Tool Kit Braid Hair Dreadlocks Needle Weaving Crochet for Braid Craft (0.5mm) a.co/d/cS6viA5
If it’s from the root there are 2 options I would do. 1: gather the hairs around the lock and crochet it into the thinning loc, or 2: cut off the loc and reattach it.
I just broke down and brought regular crochet needles and I truly prefer them. Got tired of buying the ones with the wooden or plastic handles…They kept breaking
Yesss! I’m so happy 🙌🏽 cuz who wants to be cutting Locs lol. For the black dye I use dark and lovely in natural black but you’ll have to touch it up every couple months. Every dye fades after a few washes.
Hi first time here, definitely needed this info! Alot of my locs are thinning at the ends and some even just drops off if I am doing a retwist! Definitely going to use this method from now on ,& just like you some of my ends are still curly. I thoroughly enjoyed the video thanks 😊
Will this work with type 3 hair as well? I messed up. I've been wearing the same daily style for a good 4 years and I recently noticed that several inches of the space where I've tied my hair back is like half the thickness. I don't want them to eventually break 😭
My hair is fine and long (butt length). It's thinning at the roots. I dont get retwist very often because of this, so maybe twice a year. I don't really style my locs, I wear them down daily, and cover them at night. Any tips to stop the thinning? If I cut all the thin ones, I would have nothing but a cookie bush in the middle of my head.
That’s dope! A few of my locks are thin from the root. I don’t get my hair done much and don’t have many locks , would this method work if it’s closer to the root?
I apologize for the late reply, I didn’t see your comment. Thank you so much for watching ☺️ I would recommend cutting the loc and reattaching it if it’s close to the roots, this way the loc would be stronger at the roots.
Hi, I know this video is pretty old but if you see my comment please reply. I started my loc journey about six months ago, some are locked and others are not. I had to have a procedure done where they had to pull my hair apart to put leads on my scalp and they pulled some of the locs apart or stretched them and now I see weak places, is it ok to try and repair them on starter locs?
It really pisses me off to hear someone say that if you don't go through the "ugly stage" then locs aren't for you😢. There is soo much division amongst black people hair that comes from black people that it's ridiculous. No two people are the same yet they may end up with the same results. Why does it have to be soo much stigma surrounding our hair? You may never know why a person skipped the locing process but to say locs aren't for someone because of that just shows that you fall right into the stigma about our hair that keeps us divided now. I love your locs and I think they are beautiful but chose kinder words next time because you never know what someone may be going through with their hair❤
😂 Seems to be working for everyone else. 🤷🏽♀️There’s a lot of videos on YT on how to do it, find one that works for you instead of being negative. Have a bless day☺️
