Great tip. I would also replace the whole panel. I would also make sure I painted all the edges of the panel especially the bottom so you wouldn’t get any water weeping up from the bottom and damage the bottom of the panel and work it’s way up. Keep up the good work!

For sure, I think that is an overlooked part of the project but could really help extend out the life of the siding. Thanks for the feedback!

You are correct by pulling the whole panel as a templet. I also noticed a hose holder above the damage area that might had a leak the caused the damage. Great video

If u only want to replaced that small section, I would cut out the rotted wood. Cut out a new piece to match it. Use metal flashing and staple it along the sides of the new piece so when you install it, there is flashing behind the new piece and the old piece, preventing water to get in between them.

I lived in Washington too for quite a few years, prime with Kilz, totally agree with advice given.

I'll second prime+painting the bottom (and back 1ft) for these types of panels before you install them. They last considerably longer. Also you need to really work the primer and paint into the panel grooves or the panel will delaminate. I did two coats of primer, two coats of paint, and then caulking along the bottom to make it water tight.

I'd want to prime with something like Kilz to help reduce future mold or mildew problems, etc....

Those panels will never rot if they are left on the shelf at the store but if you take them home and put them up on a wall they will soon be rotted. they are temporary siding.

The siding panels won't rot if they're installed properly and the roof and rain gutters are well maintained.

You offered to respond to additional questions. I'm also in the Northwest with actual vertical channel siding and need guidance on how to pull off the pieces in the center of a wall to selectively replace rotten boards. Any suggestions on how to pull off without damaging the adjacent vertical channel board?

I’ve got a spot above my porch that I’m trying to figure out how to tackle. Paneling looks like some type of engineered 12” wide paneling that overlaps each other but the lowest panel which was near the gutter has a rot spot on it. Not sure what’s behind the paneling but it’s damaged also as I can push my finger through both. Assuming this is some type of plywood sheathing? I guess only way to find out is to rip out the bottom panel and see.

What tool is best to remove the siding? Just a pry bar? I have a similar issue and need to replace a large piece of siding on my shed and I want to keep it intact when I remove the old one...

If it is attached with nails I would take my time with a pry bar but if screws were used I would just back the screws out with my impact driver or drill.
