Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert, Richard Trethewey, demonstrates how to replace a bathroom faucet.

Time: 30 min - 1 hour
Cost: $30 and up
Skill Level: Beginner
Tools:
Specialty faucet wrench [amzn.to/38sqqUr]
Shopping List:
Bathroom faucet [amzn.to/3nInGIT]
Steps:
1. Shut off water by hand or with a specialty wrench. Be careful not to over torque.
2. Use a pan or rag to catch any dripping water under the sink. Turn on the faucet to relieve any water pressure left in the lines.
3. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet. Use a multi-purpose plumbing tool if you cannot reach by hand.
4. Remove the old faucet.
5. Place Plumber’s Putty around the bottom of the faucet to make a water tight connection. It should fill in any imperfection of the sink.
6. Place the faucet through the mounting holes in the sink and tighten the nuts.
7. Remove the excess putty.
8. Install the lift rod.
Resources:
Richard installed a Glacier Bay 4 in Centerset 2-Handle Low-Arc Bathroom Faucet [thd.co/37AYI8C], which can be found at The Home Depot (www.homedepot.com/). The plumber’s putty and wrench sets Richard used can be found at any home center.
The specialty faucet wrench Richard used to break the connections underneath the sink is an EZ Change Faucet Tool [amzn.to/38sqqUr], which is manufactured by Rigid (www.ridgid.com/).

What takes most people 5 minutes takes 90 minutes for me. My home is old so I have to turn off water to the whole house. The tool was the key to success so I'm really glad i watched this video first. It gave me the confidence to try this by myself.

Thanks so much for recommending the faucet tool. I replaced the old faucet in my bathroom today and it made all the difference.

Would have been a better video if you replaced a faucet in a real sink in a real vanity located in AN OLD HOUSE and then taken the faucet screen out and flushed the faucet of manufacturing residue and checked for any connection leaks afterwards. oh btw, plumbers putty is a petroleum based product and will deteriorate any plastic or rubber gasket so it should not be used under the rubber or plastic gasket. I saw in a different video made by someone else that clear silicon can be carefully used around the faucet gasket after the faucet is installed

I predict 3 trips to the hardware store and then after 6 hours realize I need a plumber. And it's sad because I have the tools and physical ability to do this.

When everything goes right 🙁. The shut-off is frozen or doesn’t close completely. Then the shut-off is solidly attached to the nipple with umpteen years of corrosion (a torch or heat gun helps, along with some periodic tapping with a hammer and some penetrating lubricant). Hope the nipple threads are still intact. Plumbing. Not for the faint of heart. Always know where the house shut off is - and where the wrench to turn it is. Love that under-sink wrench!

Good details on the tools needed, but in case you don't have that neat wrench, you'll need 1-3 hours, two socket wrenches because you're not sure what that bolt size is, a dremel when you realize your sockets aren't long enough to touch the nut with the bolt in the way, probably 3 to 4 different wrenches because you're going to try them all before using the dremel and then wonder why you didn't just use the dremel in the first place, and lastly some WD40

Why in the world would a shut off valve work smoothly in a old house and not require shutting off the water to a house and replacing the valve.
