This Kia is running bad, running rough and stalling when slowing down and stopping and then almost refusing to restart. Even starting regularly was slow requiring multiple tries. The OBD2 scanner shows error codes P0335 and P0336, which indicates a failing crankshaft position sensor. Luckily, replacing the CPS is a super-easy job, let's see if that helps!

This video was a huge help. I replaced this part on my Moms 2013 kia rio. I'm not a pro mechanic, but I know my way around a toolbox and can swap a part. This took me 20 minutes start to finish. I did it in the driveway with the front up on ramps. The symptoms of our car was: would start fine cold, but if you stopped somewhere quick (store, or for gas) it wouldn't restart. Just cranked and cranked. I was having her start it in neutral until I could get around to fixing it. It also made an intermittent clacking from the passenger front right of engine. The car was also seeming a bit underpowered even when it ran good. After replacing this part, the clacking disappeared, the stalling went away, and I swear the car has way more pep. Its like a little rocket now. Thanks, Cliff!

Yep, it's kind of amazing that a little $20 part and 20 minutes of your time can make such a huge difference. My friend was ready to trade her car in on a new one because she was convinced it would be an extremely expensive repair since the car was running so badly.

Thanks Cliff. About to install one this afternoon. Caught your video just in time. Leaps and bounds above the only other 'how to' video I could find a few days ago for a 13 rio.

Excellent, very concise video. My 2013 Kia Rio occasionally has a rough start. I crank the engine and it doesn't start. A little gas on the accelerator will cause the car to rough start. The tach goes to zero, nonresponse after this type of rough start. I replaced my rear fuel pump and the issue went away for a few weeks without incident. Two rough starts this past week. There is no rhyme or pattern to the issue. Level ground, steep ground, has happened on both. Two stalls in the past week at random while stopped with the car in Drive. There's just no rhyme or reason, no pattern to speak of. No check engine light was thrown on any of these occasions. For about $20 and maybe 30 minutes, I'm going to swap this sensor out. It could be my issue. With 11.5 years and 137k miles, I figured replacing the rear fuel pump couldn't hurt anything. That repair did cause the car to run without a single incident for about three weeks. The new pump runs significantly quieter than the OEM unit. That was under $90 and an easy repair. It certainly cannot hurt. Thanks again for a great video. And be assured, i liked your demeanor while you're giving the instructions ... you are clear, concise, and you speak with a lightheaded tone and one that says you really want to help home mechanics save time and money on car repairs my type of person can handle with good instruction. The smile sure makes it easier to listen to you. Great job!

Great video thanks Cliff. I cleaned the sensor but that only lasted a couple of weeks. So put in a cheap replacement, they vary from ten to $80! But those clips, omg, they just wouldnt come out for me. Fortunately the connection wasnt so difficult but that top connector would not budge unless I had a two foot screwdiver or pliers, so I just left the old sensor in there, detached, and secured both old and new with cable ties. Voilà! I think you were working on the 1.6l, mine is the 1.4l. Running like new, in ten years only needed this, new single coil post, and of all things front rotors. Love this little car, except for no cruise! Drives so well, hasnt dated. A/c is marginal, a little noisy. But not boring.

Thank you so much for this video! Just installed mine on my 2014 Kia and it fixed the issue. I was hesitant because I had no check engine light or fault codes, but experiencing a hard start from cold and intermittent dead tachometer so assumed this sensor was the culprit. Watched several videos showing how to get the magnet out but no one else showed the hardest part, disconnecting and reconnecting the connector! Thanks again Cliff, I just subscribed and plan to watch more of your videos soon!

Cliff, You are the man!!! After replacing both cam position sensors as recommended by Kia, the problem persisted. I found your video by searching RU-vid "2015 Kia Rio P0335". I really appreciate straight forward clear instructions like this. You make the internet worthwhile. Thank you.

Hello bro, why did you change both cam position sensors? Only 1 crankshaft position sensor need to be changed, isn't it? My kia Rio is giving P0335 A circuit fault code, through this video I was able to remove the crankshaft position sensor, tomorrow I'll change it

Hi Cliff, I replaced the sensor on my 13 rio and then the engine stopped working, when I switch it on it goes on for less than a second then shuts down immediately, I was wondering what could be the reason?

Awesome vid. Helped my figure out why my Rio also died and how to replace the sensor. @Cliff's Garage, Would it also be a good idea to change to camshaft sensor or is it not necessary?

I just did this but, mine will stall when pressing the accelerator, even just a bit. Tachometer appears to be working; idling around 700rpm, holds still. Any ideas? EDIT: I floored it in N and then the tachometer went to zero unresponsive but the engine will now rev and CEL P0336 came on… EDIT EDIT: I held the accelerator down and the engine roms fluctuated between 700-1000 bouncing; then it threw a code and freely reved while tach went to zero. I had it in N; so restarted it and then put it in gear and voila the CEL disappeared and its like it never happened.

I am having a problem with my 2014 Kia Rio. Had a misfire on Cyl 2, throwing code P0302. I swaped the coils from Cyl 2 to Cyl 3 and was happy to see the problem moved to Cyl 3, so bad coil I thought. Well, all of a sudden now, I have multiple misfire code P0300 and Cyl 4 Missfire now shows up along with a code C1555 which I am not able to find out easily what it means for this car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some sites say Crank position sensor and some steering angle sensor.

Quick update for all who may have the issue I had, as I managed to fix it. Looks like I had multiple coils go at the same time which is really like winning lottery, very rare! 3 of the 4 coils all went at the same time, and once replaced all the codes actually disappeared on their own, I did not even have to use the code reader to reset. Happy driving!

Should you disconnect the battery first? Saw to other videos where they do, also saw another one and this one where it’s not mentioned to disconnect the battery
@CliffsGarage
@CliffsGarage Год назад
I see no reason to. It would be almost impossible to short out the connection and I'm not sure it would hurt anything if you did.

Is the crankshaft part that goes into engine supposed to have oil on it when you take it out? (The long cylinder piece)
@CliffsGarage
@CliffsGarage 8 месяцев назад
I think so, IIRC it uses magnetism to sense the crankshaft position, so it need to have no iron between it and the crank. It would also explain the need for the sealing o-ring.

Hello, could you tell me please if it's necessary to drain the oil first to change this sensor?
@CliffsGarage
@CliffsGarage 26 дней назад
No need to drain the oil. That hole does not lead into the engine internals, in fact, I think it's just a blind hole.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. Is the car still throwing the same P0335 or P0336 error code? It's unlikely but possible you got a defective or incorrect sensor. Looking at the current codes will also rule out having accidentally knocked something else loose. Lord knows I've done *that* before ...
