How To Replace a Honda K Series Serpentine Belt Tensioner

Is your Honda K series making a horrible screeching noise? It might be the serpentine belt tensioner. In this video I show you how to replace a bad serpentine belt tensioner on a Honda K series engine. I'm doing this job in a 2004 Honda Element, but this method should work for most Honda K series engines.
Unfortunately I couldn't find the info on my former tensioner that went bad. This is the one I replaced it with.
Dayco Tensioner: www.amazon.com/Dayco-89321-Be...
Hopefully it lasts longer than its predecessor. For best results, I recommend the Honda part, but it does come at a price.

Eric, I like your style of video! With the added words like 12mm etc. That helps a lot! I've done hundreds of those over the years. Some are easy, others not so easy. Every car is different. Many thumbs up from me, Eric! Great video! 👍👍 👍

Quick tip. If this ever happens to you, there's no need to replace the entire tensioner assembly. You can simply unscrew the 14MM bolt in the center of the pulley and change just the pulley, that's what is making the noise. As usual, an OEM pulley is ideal. The part number for the pulley is 31180-RAA-A01 and it is currently about $30 from Honda.
@gruberhoffman
@gruberhoffman Год назад
I wondered about doing this as there seems to be no problem with the tension part; it seems that my problem is a bearring issue with the pulley. I even wondered if pressing out the old bearring and installing a new one could be done without too much fuss on a 2003 Honda CRV.
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 Год назад
@@gruberhoffman If it was mine, I'd just get a new OEM pulley and be done with it. Replacing the bearing separately is theoretically possible, but in my opinion, the difficulty of finding one of the exact right size and the potential for a problem if something goes wrong is too high to take the risk when a new pulley is only about $30. If it fails, you will be stranded and ruin the engine if you don't stop right away before it overheats.

Eric, I need your help...I watch this video on RU-vid about how to tell which wheel bearing is bad on a car and I determined the front right based on this guys video. The noise goes away when turning right and gets worse when turning left. I replaced the front right on my CB7 which as you know is no easy task and now I have the same symptoms but it has always sounded like it’s coming from the front left. Should I just replace the front left wheel bearing and eat the cost or could it be something else. I should post a video so you can see it, or hear it actually.

One thing that wasn't emphasized enough is how long that 17mm stud is. As a DIYer who buys specialty tools ONLY when necessary, I don't have a set of EXTRA deep metric sockets. 75mm deep is needed. The ONLY socket I could find, that wasn't part of a +$150 set,was CTA Tools 1717 Extra Deep Socket - 17mm. Also for a DIYer to do what you did, they'd need to jack the car up, remove the left front wheel, lower the car on a jack stands THEN support the engine with the jack. I did mine without removing the motor mount. I tried a dozen times to get the belt where it needed to be and was stymied each time by a twist or slack I couldn't see that stopped me from being able to get it over the last pulley. Finally I folded the belt nearly flat and shoved it down between the tensioner and water pump with a stick. Then I pulled it down over the main crank, temporarily it looped over the power steering pump to keep it in line and couldn't fall or get twisted while I got the belt around AC compressor. Removed it from the power steering pump to get it around the alternator pulley, then went for the tensioner and power steering pulley.

Wait till you see the videos on the Mini I'm working on. www.ericthecarguy.com/blog/2145-april-2018-newsletter As for the story, I just read that this morning. I was trying to wrap my head around it as well. I had the same van if you remember. The only thing I can think of is that it was a freak accident involving the 3rd row seat. I'm thinking somehow he got trapped under it and it locked into position. A horrible way to go, not to mention his poor parents. My 2012 Odyssey has a different rear seat set up than the previous generations. Perhaps they saw the danger and made the correction. My heart goes out to his family. The real failure there was the rescue response. They simply didn't get to him in time. He called twice!

Eric, why does the new part need to be well new instead of just replacing the pulley itself or the bearing inside? Also I’ve done my serpentine belt on my car thanks to your videos and an idler pulley. Wasn’t easy on a big v8 but it was easier access but not much wiggle room to route the belt back on towards the bottom of the engine. Only had to remove the battery

8:28 - Not sure but sounds like you might have air intake leak. Non OEM intakes periodically Crack. If your using an OEM that may crack too, but be sure to check hose connections too under the intake. Cheers!
