SomeGuyOutside address a serious problem with a very commonly found as the transmission in many FCA and specifically Jeep wranglers. Symptoms often experienced by this valve going bad is the typical limp mode/2nd gear and stalling at low speeds/idle.
This is an absolutely a doable at home project but it takes slow and steady work, not something you want to rush through and a second set of helping hands is not needed but highly recommended.
If this video helped you diagnose, fix (or decide to take to a mechanic and avoid the mess entirely) comment down below! I appreciate every question, suggestion and helpful tip.

I liked how you have shown your issues as well as how you suggested to do it differently. For example, dropping the exhaust pipe. I also really liked how you have shown how to release the electrical connecting plugs. Not many videos show that detail! The tip of rotating to last ratchet position is good to know! I'm about to tackle my own 2004 LJ with very soon. Your video has helped my see what is involved!

I’m glad you found it informational, I hope it helps. Biggest time wasting pain in the butt was certainly the exhaust pipe clearance but I also had a good hour+ spent on the forward most driver side sensor that I could not get to release for the life of me until it just released

09 did not have the 3.6L but they do have the crappy 42rle transmission and a gutless 3.8L v6. Good video for sure though. Things never go as smooth as some people try to make them appear. Thanks for not editing out the difficult stuff.

@@thevaperdragonect9714 I don't know what country you're in but in the U.S from 2007 to 2011 was a 3.8 v6. Not sure where you're coming up with a 3.7. Maybe you should lay off the vapes.

After changing my trans oil 2 times to try and rid the P0750 code, I had to resort to changing out the failed solenoid assembly! This video helped greatly to understand all the steps to that swap out. I always find it funny that when doing the same job, it is always something different for everyone on where we get stuck! Luckily my sticky points weren't too bad, and seeing your pains helped me avoid those as well. Overall, took about 4 hours, not bad. Thanks for posting!

I hope it worked out fine and solved your problems, I’m glad it could help and it always amazes me to hear the variety of problems (or there lack of) people run into on projects like this. You’d think Jeep could make two vehicles the same but I suppose that’s too much to ask for!

Thanks, dude, much appreciated. I have to confess that I won't be doing the job myself but I always like to know what the job entails. Also, my mechanic tells me that the solenoid repair kit is on backorder in the UK and will take five weeks (or longer) to get from Jeep UK from I'm now on the search for an aftermarket solenoid kit. It's useful to learn from your video that this transmission was used on lots of vehicles so hopefully it won't be too difficult to source. That's me being hopeful as the garage has already spent an hour searching with no luck so now it's my turn! Greetings from Swiss Road Trip.

Sweet video, reminds me of myself in my driveway wondering why I bought a jeep. I have the same issue with my 11' JK also from WA. If I would've known, I should've replaced the solenoid when I replaced the ATF pan and filter last year (also didn't drop the exhaust, blast those back bolts dude) but I wasn't having those issues until this year. Oh well!

Honestly the exhaust is high on the list of dumbest thing FCA ever did and thats a high bar of stupidity
@JoshuaMathis-rz9kw
@JoshuaMathis-rz9kw 11 дней назад
You can also take the skid plate off over the diff. And then you can take a jack and jack up on the diff and it will raise the transmission where you can access those back bolts a lot easier I just did this today

Video was a great help. The exhaust issue you mentioned i cured by using a ratchet strap and pulling the exhaust back and the valve body dropped right out. Great job on the Video!!! Mine was a 2010 Wrangler Rubicon

Great video! A couple things that helped me after seeing the problems you had. Once you remove the nut off shift lever I used a stubby slot screwdriver to pry the slot on the clamp part of the lever open. It came off easily after. I also slid the front half of the driveshaft off and wired the rear side still attached to the leaf shackle. I noticed it bumped into you a few times on the video. 🍻

Nice video, helped a lot when I worked on mine. When it came to the 10m bolts behind the exhaust, I used a 1/4" drive ratchet with a u-joint socket and 3" extension; worked like a charm.

About to do this on a Dakota, same trans. I had already changed that pan in the past, get one from Rock Auto with the drain plug, save yourself the future grief.

Just jacked up on the transfer case a bit after taking out the 3 nuts holding the transmission to the crossmember- gave enough clearance to get the pan off and remove the valve body

Tbh I'm having major buyer's remorse with my 09 jeep liberty I just bought 😂 the 42RLE transmission is JUNK. Going to try what you've done. Was already going to do the transmission Pan and filter since it's leaking but I'm also going to replace the inflow and outflow sensors on the transmission. The transmission is clunking hard and struggling to shift.

Hey guys, great video and I’ve got everything done up until placing the shifting shifting bracket lever back into the valve body rod that shifts the gears. When you go past the low drive into the 1 click that locks the swinging arm on top of the valve body…. After installing it - how do you go about reinstalling the shifting bracket and getting everything to shift into the correct gear? I am trying to figure this out and am stuck. If there’s maybe a part of the video u missed or you have another else where Any help is greatly appreciated

Sorry for the very late reply and hope that you found the answer/got it back together. were you're referring to the top of the shifter that sticks out the top of the transmission, and how to realign that with the proper shifting position?

Hey man, do you know anything about the park pawl anchor bracket from an 05 TJ? I’m trying to put my valve body back in and I can’t remember where this part went in! From online, it seems like Chrysler may have added this part in a recall to stop it from slipping out of park. Appreciate it brother.

Do they sell anything compatible with the 2017 jk I’m in limp mode 2-3 solenoid code

I get the P0732 (gear 2 incorrect ratio). It's stuck in 2. Two transmission shops over the phone said I need a rebuilt transmission in regards to that code. Are you saying it's a good chance it's only a solenoid replacement?

It was having a very hard time shifting before it started getting stuck in 2nd gear. If you start experiencing the 2nd gear lock then I’d bet that’s what it is!

Sorry for not seeing this, any update on what you did to fix it? I would have started with the shifting linkage alignment as the most obvious culprit.

I did this same swap myself about a month ago but unfortunately i am still throwing the P0740 code and cant shake it. Were you throwing that code as well before you tackled this?
@SomeGuyOutside
@SomeGuyOutside 2 года назад
I was not running any code consistently, when the trans would stick in 2nd gear (limp mode) we were never somewhere near a scanner and after pulling over and turning the Jeep on and off the Jeep would drive fine and the codes were gone.

hey nice video but I have a question, I'm having an issue with the variable line pressure harness ( the sensor right next to the green plug)and its plug that has the cables, it's melted and I need to change it,by any chance do you know where I could find it?
@SomeGuyOutside
@SomeGuyOutside 2 года назад
Personally the easiest for me would be go to a junkyard and cut a new one off any matching 42RLE transmission vehicle(if junk yards don’t I’d try eBay typically someone is parting out pieces on there) . You can always contact and purchase through OEM jeep but that’ll probably be quite overpriced. In my experience not a lot of traditional auto part stores carry these but someone else who sees this comment might know a better source than any of those. Good luck! Sorry I couldn’t be more of a help

That stupid solenoid is making the engine light come on and won’t let the wrangler do the O2 sensor test to pass emissions. 😭😭😭😭😭

My 42rle locked up after sitting for 4 weeks. I disconnected the shift cables and can't get it to move by hand. Does it need power and the solenoid to move? Or should it move manually? Had no shifting issues prior to parking the vehicle..
@SomeGuyOutside
@SomeGuyOutside 2 года назад
I am not sure on the specific, it shouldn’t need power to shift with the selector disconnected from the linkage. My thoughts would be to check the trans fluid level, if the level and fluid are looking good (aka not totally dry or possible water or metal on the stick). I haven’t heard of that problem in association with the solenoid but I don’t know enough to say it isn’t. Sorry I couldn’t help more, hope you can figure it out!
