I am a 60-year-old female and learning how to fix things around the house. I am GLAD to say I followed this video and did it myself and NO LEAKS. Thanks so much
Thanks so much DIYguy. My dad is long gone, and now I depend on you, and honest to goodness guys like you, to show me how. I appreciate your simple, straightforward stuff. Dad would be proud!
Thank you so much! I am a 51 yr old female that has had to learn how to fix things on my own in the last few years. I live in an older home which means things are needing to be repaired. I followed your tutorial exactly and fixed my sink for a minimal out of pocket cost. I read a few of the negative comments and total disagree. You did a great job of simplifying the instructions and helping me (which my income doesn't allow for over priced repairs) fix my sink. Thanks again!
You're welcome, Glad we could help save you some hard earned money. You can't please everyone.. some people want to see how to replace the drain... this video is on replacing the strainer as the title says. Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
I’m 61 yr old woman that fixed her sink and installed a new faucet 😆👏🏻👏🏻 thanks to these easy to follow instructions for the sink drain !!! Thank you so very much 🙏!!!
I am a 56 year old woman and disabled so I try to save money as much as possible. I appreciate your videos because you make it easy to understand and for me to do. Thank you!
Thank you soooo much, this video helped me replace both sink strainers. I called Rotor Rooter and they said they have a flat rate of $65 just to come out to assess the situation, this does not include labor fees. In fact all the plumbers I called had such a 'come out and see' fee. All I needed was to get a $7 mini hack saw to remove that corroded locknut underneath as you suggested. I got all the materials I needed (hacksaw, sink strainers, plumber putty, tailpiece pipes) at Lowe's for around $30. In less than 30 minutes I was done!
+PariNicole You're welcome and we're glad to hear we could save you the 30$ right off the top as there come out and take a look fee. Glad to hear you got it fixed in a reasonable amount of time. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Take care.
You ain't lying girl I called them to and just four to kitchen sink shut off valve $495 with my parts it is crazy but I had no choice they crack and I have to use my emergency shut-off valve🤦♂️🤦♂️🤬
Now that's the best step by step video I have seen so far. Thank You for making things so much easier for a guy that is trying to learn and save a buck at the same time. I would recommend this video to anyone that wants to replace a drain strainer and they will be relieved to see how easy this guy makes it to do yourself. Keep up the Great work and thanks again!
Appreciate this video. I am a 3rd shift worker who woke up to my dear princess pulling all the stuff from under the sink because of a leak. Well I didn't get to work out today, but I did fix the problem with the help of your video. Thanks again! Semper Fi!
I love this! No nonsense and straight forward and clear instructions with great camera work. I have a leaky sink strainer basket (just discovered while getting something from further back under sink, and found about an 1/8" of water covering the entire bottom under sink; after trial and error, determined it was the old and decrepit strainer basket that needs changed). This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. I'm glad you went into enough detail to explain how things were to be taken apart/put back together. The instructions on the new strainers I bought weren't very descriptive so I was left guessing how much putty I needed to apply without ending up with overkill.
Thank you SO much! My plumber was going to charge $175. For less than $20 in materials I was able to change this completely by myself. I feel so PROUD! For anyone with the same issue as me...I couldn't get the locknut off with a wrench, so I tapped it with a flat screwdriver until it loosened.
You're welcome, Glad we could help save you some money. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like if you haven't already. Thanks
Thanks for the video! Short and sweet. Having a Home Advisor "Plumber" replace your sink, faucet, and garbage disposal=$375. Getting to re-do all of his shotty work myself = Priceless. I think I'm now a Plumberess. Maybe I should go work for Home Advisor!
Thumbs down because it over-simplified the removal process... this seems to be a 'staged' repair where everything was partially loosened and easy to remove... when I replaced mine, the plumbers putty on the top-side of the old one was so strong and caked on it took about a half hour with a hammer and chisel to get it off
I’m a 60 some female and do all my home repairs. Your video is the best! Your voice is calm and clear and the video shots are excellent. Also I appreciate that you do not leave out ANY STEPS and don’t assume homeowner already knows that step! Thank you! Please keep the videos coming! Good luck!
This is my first comment ever on RU-vid and this video needs the praise it deserves! This was the best video. I could see everything you were doing and you didn't talk about anything else, just right to the point and you actually explained it! I am not afraid to do this now! Thanks a bunch! Keep you the great videos!
Thank you thank you ! . I'm 54 yrs old my fellow is a truck driver currently GONE sink starts to LEAK thanks to your video I replace the old rubber washer along with the tail pipe. You gave this old lady a boost of confidence.
Awesome, Glad to hear our video helped you get it fixed without the leak. You're welcome. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up / like if you haven't already. Thanks
Perfect; it made me look like I knew what I was talking about when I went to the store to purchase the new strainer. New strainer installed and working. Thank you for the video!
This is perfect! Thank you soooo much! Very quick and straight forward with simple and clear instructions. I can now install the new strainer that's been sitting in my "To-Do" box for probably a year! LOL Great tutorial!
Thank you for the demo, just what I needed! The nut was stubborn as you said it might be, so I sprayed it with vinegar and waited as Jim suggests below, then a few bangs with a hammer freed it. After that, Channel locks were fine for unscrewing the nut, no need for special tools! You just saved me some good money. Thank you.
Very helpful - thank you! I am installing a square drain basket with a foam gasket for above the sink and plastic gasket below. I wasn't sure if I needed silicone and where exactly to put it (and did not want to hire a plumber for something fairly simple like this). Your instructions are clear and simple and your voice and style are very friendly and pleasant to watch (not the case with all DIY videos).
Awesome, Glad we could help get your leak fixed and save you some $$. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like if you haven't already. Thanks

Wow, perfect instructions. I discovered that the threaded part underneath the sink had rotted the night of Jan 1, thus trickling water underneath for who knows how long, watched your video this morning on Jan 2, went to hardware store, bought the parts and putty, and it's totally fixed now. I was ready to call a plumber because it all seemed so cryptic down there.
Thank you my dude. I just replaced the strainer and the end outlet tee w/ the baffle and nuts. Your DYI video was awesome and down to a tee. You saved me $150. I appreciate it.
I went to Menards thinking I would have to replace the entire sink. There was a VERY knowledgeable young lady who listened to my problem and told me all I needed to do was replace the sink's drain. Then she told me the real secret, unless you are tight on time, is to soak the drain in vinegar in order to make it much easier to disassemble. Since our sink has 2 bowls we put a cookie sheet to remember not to use the broken side. We let it soak for a full week before trying to disassemble. I took a hammer and long screwdriver and hit the ring underneath twice. The old one broken into 2 pieces. It was easy. Disassembly after soaking in vinegar, 30 seconds. Next I opened the new drain and looked at the accompanying instructions, which were confusing. All I got from them is I needed either plumber putty or silicone. Off to Home Depot I went where I learned the smallest plumber putty was less than 2 bucks compared to over 5 for silicone. Choosing the putty seemed a no brainer. Not sure how to reassemble correctly the first time with the instructions I went to RU-vid, found this video at the top of the list and watched it. The video was clear, short and concise. And it uses plummer putty, perfect. It took less than 5 minutes to assemble. AND NO LEAKS. The old one lasted 35 years. I am hopeful this one lasts longer then me. Great video.
Glad our video helped with the assembly of the new sink basket. Thanks for the kind words about our video, taking the time to leave us a comment and for watching. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up so it will stay at the top and make it easier for other people to find.
Thanks Jim, I followed your advice. Mine wouldn't budge, so I sprayed the threads and nut with vinegar and waited an hour. It still wouldn't budge, so I held the strainer through the holes with pliers from below, and banged the nut until it came free with a hammer. Once it broke free of the calcium or rust it was a snap to unscrew. Thank you!
I have heard for the past 6 weeks "I will fix that this weekend" So I watched your video this morning and it is already fixed. That wasn't as hard as I thought. Thank you so much for helping me.
You know what they say...”if you want something done tell a man...if you want something done right tell a woman! Good Job. Wish my wife did DIY without me! 😆
You're welcome, Glad we could help. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like if you haven't already. Thanks

Thank you for this video, it was clear, concise, and helped me immensely. I wouldn't have had the courage to attempt this repair without this video, and so far everything seems to have worked out great!
You're welcome, Glad we could help and make you look like a superstar in front of the family. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment.
Thanks for the video. The drain pipe to my kitchen sink would not stay connected, so I changed out my basket strainer. I paid about $18 in parts from Lowes hardware, and took about 30-40 minutes of work with my son's help. Thanks again.
One bit of advice I would add is: When testing after installation, dont just put a small ammount of water in, fill up the sink past its normal working level to have as much pressure as possible on the seals. If it doesent leak now it never will.
HA! That's how I refer to myself when it comes to this stuff. Since I've replaced a strainer and have installed a disposal myself (had to adjust it a month or so later due to a leak), I"m promoting myself from moron to imbecile.
Thank you! We had someone install a new sink maybe a couple years ago and this was the second time one of these had to be replaced. I decided to just do it myself instead of paying him to replace it yet again. Your video was very helpful!
You're welcome, Glad to hear you got your sink strainer replaced. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up. Thanks
On the verge of 2020 and I needed to replace a sink strainer in my mom's house. The nut under the strainer looked different and I said "Hey, I bet Diy Guy has a vid on that!" Thanks for having these vids. Saved me a plumber.
Here because I needed a refresher before fixing my kitchen sink drain! Thanks for your quick easy explanation! You got right to it and didn’t over or under explain which is much appreciated! Thanks very much and I’m a new subscriber!
Thanks for this instructional video! I needed this exact thing today. Step by step, we’ll shown and talked through, easy enough, and only one trip to the hardware store! Thanks DIYGuy!

Hey, thx guy! This was really helpful. Let me tell you HOW much: i'm a DIY-shadetree AUTO mechanic (just replaced a transmission on a '91 Ply Voyager, myself); yet i came to *YOU* to help me fix my sink (jamnut wz stuck). Also, glad u said 2use plumber's putty; i prob wld have used Permatex! Thx 10000s.😊
Thank you for this video. I was just about to call a plumber to fix the leak on my laundry room utility sink. It's leaking from the drain. I am retired and don't enjoy these DIY projects where I have to get on my knees or back to fix something. I always end up bruising myself or cutting myself with annoying little abrasions. My son told me to check RU-vid for videos to see if it was something I could do myself. I'm off to the hardware store, ready to save some $$$$ and do it myself. You not only saved an old man some cash, but I think I can do this without hurting myself. Thank you. I'm sure the plumbers are pissed.
Can’t thank you enough for this simplistic explanation. Other than having to cut a pipe to fit to the basket because the last basket was smaller, this was on point
Thanks for the step by step, I just changed the sink strainer where we rent, the sink was forever clogging and leaking now it's way nicer to do our dishes. it only cost me 20 dollars or so for the puddy and strainer, best investment.
Thank you! I live alone and my father died last year sadly so I can no longer ask him to fix anything, but thanks to you, I can learn how to do things by myself! This looks pretty easy!
Thanks for the very helpful and to the point video. Anyone attempting this should take the advice mentioned below where if the retaining ring doesn't twist off, use a grinder or dremel to cut the retaining ring. Do it that and save yourself headache, backache and all the cursing associated with these repairs.
Thank you for this video! I had trouble getting the bottom basket off - I used a flat nose screw driver and hammered into it and it eventually split the metal to get the ring off! Wanted to mention it in case someone didn't want to use power tools on it! But I did it, thanks for your help!!
You're welcome, Glad we could help. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up if you haven't already. Thanks
Thanks for this video! My sink had some less friendly plumbing underneath it but this got me in the right direction. The use of a cutting wheel made it so much easier since the whole basket was spinning with the nut.
I'm 63 years old and this video is giving me the confidence to try and tackle replacing the locking nut under the basket on my sink. The hardest part for me is going to be getting down there, or more so getting back up. Thanks for the video.
Thanks to you, I was able to explore and figure out what the heck was going on with my sink, turned out to be something totally different than what you showed, but I was able figure out what parts to undo etc. Thank you
Excellent tutorial. We have a stainless steel utility sink that we use to wash our toddler when changing his diapers. He's been stepping and pushing into the sink strainer and the putty and gaskets finally gave way. I'll have to put a raised rigid grate that covers the entire sink bottom to keep pressure off the sink strainer once I replace it after watching your video.
