Bad idea. Just swap the insides of the old valve with the new valve parts. Just unscrew the nut on top of the valve. May be tight but soak it with some wd 40. It’s only a rubber washer inside.

Hey there. Thanks for the video but that shark bite is a nightmare waiting to happen, especially if you are in an area of the country where that spigot will freeze. Please change that properly without the shark bite. That spigot under pressure will test that shark bite and the pressure every time you shut off and turn on the faucet will make it explode off one day.
@ThomasEpps88

There is a 95% chance that the shark bite did not seat all the way on that copper pipe with all the movement in that pipe you definitely would have had to have something on the other side holding that pipe to keep it from pushing back inside the wall while pushing in that sharkbite

The way to do that in a cold climate is to heat the valve stem and washer with a torch, twist it off. Clean the pipe end with flux while it's hot, then sweat-solder on a threaded adapter that allows using a silcock that threads into it. Push the pipe with the soldered-on adapter as far back into the brick as it will go and wedge it in, or use foam to fill the gaps and stick it in there. Then thread in a ball-type silcock valve, using teflon tape on the threads. Not quite so pretty as the shark-bite one but so easy to replace if/when the time comes - put an adjustable wrench on the adapter, twist off the damaged silcock, thread in another one. That's a true 5-minute job.

If you are going to use a sharkbite fitting, get the deburring tool. It cleans up the sharp edges of the cut so you don't damage the o-ring and also it let's you know where to mark your pipe so you know if the pipe is all the way in the valve/fitting. Clean up the inside of the pipe also so there are no sharp ends.

That white plastic circle on a shark bite is only needed if you use it on plastic pipe. It's helps keep the plastic pex pipe from deforming. When using a shark bit on copper pipe always remove that white pice of plastic. It will mess you up every time buy Catching on the inside of the cooper pipe. I am a master plumber and have used over a thousand shark bites. This is what makes a shark bit fail time and time again.

You just made your life miserable the next time you have an issue with that shark bite, which appears to be recessed into the base of that spigot. It will not be easy to remove this shark bite spigot/combo unless you cut the pipe again! Why not sweat the spigot off (no cutting) and solder a male threaded adapter to the pipe and use a threaded female spigot. The next time you feel you want to replace it, you can just unscrew it with two wrenches. Life would then be so much easier for you and the next person who buys the house. It would be a win win! Do it right!

While it's wonderful that your faucet's pipe is protruding from the wall so that you can easily do this; most are flush with the wall. I don't see how this could easily work in most situations.

In this case i would of gone with soldering since that would allow you to keep the extra length in the pipe, would of also insulated the hole. And as others have said there is no way that sharkbite went on without you being able to hold the other end of the pipe. Hopefully this video doesn't mislead too many people.

If you have to pull the pipe out of the wall a bit to get a long enough piece to to work with, how do you keep it from just pushing back in when you try to attach the new faucet? Is there some kind of flat clamp you can attach to the pipe to keep it in place? I guess you could use locking pliers, but they might be too thick.
@skaizun
@skaizun 2 года назад
Get someone to hold/push the pipe from the inside. In my case, both the front and back faucets of my 60+ year old house are accessible from the inside via the kitchen sink (back yard) and a clever "door" over a hole in the drywall inside the main entrance closet (front yard). If I were to do it, myself, I'd attach a clamp or vice-grip wrench or bolster the pipe with a piece of wood against a wall, stud, or other pipe (put a cotton towel around the pipe to protect it from the clamp/wrench). In some cases, the only access may be through the inside pipes in your basement or crawlspace.

if for some unforeseen reason you can not get a full shut off , stab the shark bite valve open the valve fully this will help with the installation with little resistance , second i would use a hack saw instead of the cutter as it will give you more pipe to stab your shark bite fitting, and third give a try to unscrew the old fitting using a back up or another wrench or tool to hold the pipe still so it will not turn or bust as you try to unscrew the old valve this is very important, bigger wrenches give better leverage , be careful , thank you for sharing your video

Didn't see you turn the main valve back on. So... TIP: After you open the valve, all the way, turn the knob back in a quarter turn, This will allow you to twist the knob back and forth, in the event the valve gets stuck from hard water deposits.

Wish I knew more in detail, what you mean. I hired someone to do it and still leaking. He was a plumber/handyman, if it was so easy then why couldn’t he do it right? 😖

Sometimes, it depends on the quality of the faucet. Shark Bite products are, usually, very good, but, improper manufacture or plumber/handyman installment may have damaged the interior "ball" valve (hopefully, it isn't leaking inside your home!). As an example, I attached splitters (allows two hoses to be attached to the one faucet) on my outside faucets at two different times. A cheap, plastic, one, worked great one summer, and failed the next (the plastic ball valve must have broken during the winter), while an expensive bronze ball valve hasn't failed in years. However, water pressure is surprisingly strong, and may force its way through even the best-made faucet valves, in which case, a professional plumber may be your only hope (est. $200).

I would say this is a good solution for a DIYer but I’m not sure how reliable this would be for professional work. I would suggest putting that in the description somewhere

You can also just rebuild the old one without having to take it off.

I would like to see what happened when you turned the indoor valve back on!? There will be water spraying around your shark bite because of weak bite.

1. Most situations will not have that much slack in the line. 2. Someone needs to support the pipe from the inside. 3. You didn't sand to bare copper far enough back for shark bite fittings.

Yeah, he had to cut it and not show how the pipe pushed back into the wall when he tried to push it on there and then DAMN sure didn't want to show the next half hour it took him to figure it out. lol

Maybe he should have installed a long stem valve that would prevent it from freezing as well as having a built in back flow preventer.

I have used SharkBite fittings. It is not as easy as it appears for copper pipes. More over it needs some force to pop it in. That means somebody real strong must be holding it so tight this guy can pop it in. No way. I like SharkBite and it is easy to use with PEX piping and little room to work with.
