@TheDro

@@rocktidwell898 i did a rack and pinion job on a dropped 91 acura integra and it was a nightmare to get it aligned. Make sure you have a way to tow the car to an alignment shop after the change. You can mark everything too but i dont think it ends up coming out perfect. It was probably one of the harder jobs i had to do on a vehicle so far but i was also just learning then. Im sure a true mechanic wouldn't have had as many issues knowing work arounds from experience. Id love to see a chris fix video on that too

the core support can be a beefy piece of metal though it usually isn't. windstars have a pretty solid subframe that's heavy duty and welded. other cars have bolt on core supports or welded supports that do not have much structural integrity. as for jacking up the motor, you can usually get away with a 2x4 cut off under the oil pan if you gingerly jack it up and make sure the motor is moving independently from the chassis. jacking from a small area on the engine block increases the odds of causing damage to external motor components and injury due to less surface area making contact. i learned that the hard way when i was a newbie. i would stay away from jacking from mating surfaces because that has a higher chance of causing a leak. i just wanted share my insight. with that said, i like what you're doing and i like to see people maintaining their vehicles. knowledge is a great thing to share.
@chrisfix

Thanks for sharing your insight. I would never jack up your motor from the oil pan, but I know people do. I appreciate your tips!
@ScubaCat3
@ScubaCat3 9 лет назад
ChrisFix The Ford Workshop manual actually specifically says to jack up on the transmission pan with a block of wood for the trans mount on the other side. For the mount you're working on here, though, it says to lift from the top (as if anyone's really going to do that for a motor mount). I just thought someone might find that little nugget interesting. Thanks again for the video!

Chris, I really enjoy your videos! They've been very helpful. This particular video helped me save my brother around $300 by changing the rear motor mount on his 1998 Ford Windstar ourselves. However, I wanted to let you know that the torque specs of 85 ft pounds you claim in the video was too high for the top bolt on for us. Unfortunately, we broke the bolt when trying to tighten it to 85 ft. lbs. Afterwards I looked in the Haynes manual and it says that the top bolt should be 50-68 and the bottom should be 65-87 ft. lbs. We were successful on the second install. Just wanted you to know so you could add an annotation in the video (at 9:07 and 9:31) in order to help others keep from making the same mistake. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

Your suggestion at the end of the video to mark the nut to detect movement of the nut after installation is reminiscent of the slippage marks used for helicopter/fixed wing repairs. Chris I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute. The mechanic at a Mazda dealer showed me that I have a bad motor mount. Looks exactly like yours. I think they call it the 3rd mount. Mine is compressed and leaked out the fluid inside it. They quoted $400 to replace it, but I declined service. The mechanic said he would just tighten it down as much as possible so it doesn't shake the engine. Is that ok for the time being? Not sure how long I'll keep this car. The engine runs fine and it doesn't shake or move a lot like yours was doing. Should I lose sleep over it?

I took it to get it alined but it still don't drive straight and if I get on the freeway I have to constantly play with the wheel to keep it straight. @chrisfix 9 лет назад
Raynolasco9090 Many times, your alignment shop will mess up and your car will pull even after they align it. You have around 90 days to bring it back to them and tell them that it isnt driving straight and it is tracking. They might lift it up and tell you it needs X,Y,Z and then you know. But most of the times, they adjust the tie rods and it is better. Here is how you can check your tie rods yourself which might cause the problem if they are worn (it is a little different setup in the jeep but the same methods apply): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-brI2feYiEi8.html

Hey ChrisFix - I see you use loctite on most bolts, however I noticed that you often don't use an thread lubricant - which I thought is interesting as these bolts will go untouched for a long period of time in harsh conditions - wouldn't it be advisable to use some type of lubricant on these bolts to ensure easy removal and providing some protection against the elements?

@Jstro14
@Jstro14 6 лет назад
Lubrication of suspension bolts and engine mounts is not something you'd want to do better off to just put the bolt on torque it down and then paint brush on some old motor oil if you feel the need but if u put it in the threads how would the locktite do it's job? Bolts hardly ever rust where the nut is it's always usually the spots that are open to the elements.

Chris your a badass, I've been watching your videos for some time now! I've got a couple general questions, you seemed to just jack up the motor with no problems. The motor isn't hard connected to the vehicle? I always imagined that something external on the motor would snap. But it seems that the engine is just floating on the motor mounts? Is this the same for the transmission drive train? That its just "floating" under the car? I've got a 96 Silverado with 336k original miles on it. The truck is all original and I'd like to go through and replace all the bushings and lube the chassis. So my next question. I couldn't find a video with your truck. I don't like jacking up my vehicles from the side frame, I feel like it's an unnatural movement. Where is the best place to jack the whole front of my truck at the same time, and also the best place to jack my rear? Thanks, I hope some way your getting checks in the mail from doing these videos. The way you present them is fantastic and inspiring. Your the man. Patrick
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 8 лет назад
+Patrick Calabrese there is wiggle room with the motor and tranny. The motor vibrates and moves a lot so they design it with space. I like jacking the rear up from the differential but for some reason every owners manual says not to... I never had a problem. The front crossmember that cradles the engine and holds the suspension is what I use to jack up the front of the truck.

Hey Chris, do I need to worry about jacking up the car if I already have a lifted truck ?
@jayviz
@jayviz 4 года назад
Excellent Video. NEWBIE QUESTION: When you jack up the engine, don't you have to worry about putting strain on the transmission, exhaust, and all the other things the engine is connected to?
@Fireflyepic
@Fireflyepic Год назад
Extremely late reply here, but for other people: no, you don't need to worry about that. The engine is engineered to move independently from the frame-- this is necessary in order to dampen vibration. The transmission and exhaust are placed on hangars or mounts of their own in the pursuit of vibration isolation, which thus allow for movement. If movement wasn't allowed on the engine, then it'd be vibrating on the frame and would be an unpleasant -- and loud -- ride.

Chris I have a grinding noise coming from my alternator area when shifting into drive or reverse. Could this be a bad motor mount. I was told that they were by Firestone. But sometimes big mechanic shops tell you false info too make you spend money.

KingConker101 Here is how to check if your motor mounts are going bad. Try these tests: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZTRV5GXWpo0.html

Your videos are amazing as usual. I would suggest to clean the threads of nuts and bolts before you put the blue locktite. Thanks

Sucks the part was defected because I remember watching the video where you changed it. Thanks for taking the time to record and do the job at the same time. Probably took twice the amount of time. Notice Sun light change from day to night =P

balancebox Thanks man! Yea, it takes about 4 times as long to record and fix the car than to just fix it. But it is worth it because so many people are learning how to fix their cars!

This is off topic Chris but i have a 1999 ford windstar that the cruise control stopped working on. i checked the number 10 fuse under the dash and also replaced the "brake stop switch" on the master cylinder. Any ideas on where to go from there?

vikingjoe93 Check the vacuum lines that go to the cruise control module under the hood. Does the cruise light come on when you try to activate it?
@vikingjoe93
@vikingjoe93 9 лет назад
I'll look into the vacuum hose. I've never had a cruise control light come on that I'm aware of. Maybe it did and I just didn't pay attention to it.
@chrisfix

The cruise control light lets you know it is activating. So with no light, you might have a bad cruise control unit.

Dealing with installing new motor mounts before; my strong recommendation for Honda - especially Accords is to buy Honda motor mounts. Aftermarket brands are not the best. You will pay more for Honda but it is well worth it in the long run.

Where can you buy the Honda motor mounts do they sell them at AutoZone
@ahotdj07
@ahotdj07 2 года назад
@@SoccerEverywhere2 I would buy the motor mounts specifically from Honda. If you can get EOM Honda motor mounts somewhere else cheaper, definitely but make sure you get Honda - nothing else.

My car vibrates a lot at idle. Gets worse when I turn the wheel or turn on AC. My local mechanic says 3 out of the 4 mounts are broken. Fixing them should solve this issue?
