The only thing I would add to this video, is that it's helpful to have a dish to put the parts in. Sometimes you can use the case-back, but generally, you want to have a shallow container to put the parts in, rather than simply placing them on the pad as I have. You never know when someone might bump the table. In this case, the table is a shellacked 3/4" piece of laminated plywood that is mounted to a solid food frame, and bolted into the wall, so even a line-backer running into it wouldn't budge it. But I wanted to mention that as I noticed I didn't do this when I was just re-watching this.

You had the replacement movement already - where did you find the correct size and type and know what to order?

Hi Jeff, basically, I open up the watch first, identify the movement, and then look it up on either Esslinger or eBay. The model will already be properly sized, so that’s never been an issue.

My Bering watch the movement does not fall out on taking the back off: there appears to be another stainless ring that has to be removed first - but no idea on RU-vid how to do that. Any ideas?

It really depends. Can you send me a name and model? Sometimes the trim ring just pops out, other times there are screws.

Are there any tricks on how to properly align the second hand with the dial indices other than trial and error? I must have set the second hand 20 times just trying to align the indices on the dial.

Hi MTB, it really depends on the movement and face. Sometimes the cam on the second gear will never allow it to match up with all the second marks on the fact, but if done right, should at least be able to line up with the 12, 3, 6, and 9 locations. Best thing you can do is take the battery out, and engage the crown. This ensures the gears are at the end of a second cycle. Then, properly align the hour, minute, and second hand to the 12:00 location with the crown engaged. Then when you put the battery back in, they should line up.

So, depends. In most cases I would; however, all I was doing was replacing the date ring. The movement is also quartz, and all the gears, etc., are internal and tucked towards the middle of the movement. This being the case, I prefer to hold the movement itself as it provides better leverage when removing the small screws at the top. Now... when I work on a mechanical movement, you MUST use a movement holder. You simply cannot rebuild a mechanical movement which has gears / balance that sometimes extend beyond the base plate. So a movement holder is absolutely a must.
