Great video Jonny!!! Put some boiled linseed oil on the handle. Do it once a day for a week then once a week for a month then once a month for a year. Then once /twice a year there after. I suggest sanding the handle prior to first application of Linseed oil. Start out with say 120 then finish with 220 or so. Use 000 steel wool in between linseed oil applications. You will not believe the finish it puts on the handle and they way it makes the handle look and feel. It makes all the difference in the world.

Awesome, thanks for the tips Larry. Have heard of using the linseed oil for shovel handles and axes but have never tried it. Will have to pick some up next time to the hardware store 😁👍

This helped me to fix my 30-yr-old forged shovel, didn't realize the cheap stuff they make out of plate metal these days. The shovel sold by A.M. Leonard is 12 gauge, forged, and Amazon is only 16 gauge, some are only 14. Get the strongest, it is worth it. Thanks!

Nice, happy I could help.👍 Yes this head I used was an old American head. I believe Union brand. New stuff has gotten cheap it seems.

Thank you brother. I needed this video to handle an axe head that actually has a hole in it for this type of handle unlike a typical wood cutting axe. My axe is a two hander used for fighting in a sport called Buhurt. Thanks 🙏🏻 again

Lol, those are pretty cool. The metal legs can fold and be compact for transport. Then you just open them up and they clamp on a 2x4 or 2x6. I made some nicer ones recently. More conventional all wood, but folding. Nice thing about making own is I could make them the right height for a normal man not mini ones 😆

It doesn't go all the way in because it's supposed to curve inside the head... This is the part I'm trying to look up. I've cut a slice in the bottom few inches of the handle before, but I'm wondering if some people soak the bottom in water or oil before installing.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 2 года назад
Im guessing they probably use heat and water and probably insert them in with some sort of hydraulics
@cltinturkey

Why didn't you sharpen the cutting edge of the shovel before painting? I've also heard letting metal parts soak in a vinegar bath will remove all rust. Then you could rinse well and dry and use a file on the edge. Looks good painted, but I have the best luck with sharp tools.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 года назад
Edge was pretty sharp, I usually don't sharpen shovel heads unless they get dinged or edges rolled. Yes vinegar works great you're right, have used on rusty tools before 👍

I'll keep in mind if I run across one. Usually theyre just held on by a screw or two, but depends which kind of handle it is. Some are riveted on.

@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 2 месяца назад
Where I'm from they're all just called shovels. Square tip and round tip. Some call round tip, spades 👍
@LazzarrusLong
@LazzarrusLong 2 месяца назад
I call square shovels “transfer” shovels because they are usually used for moving more mass material than a pointy shovel.
@dannythebeerman
@dannythebeerman Год назад
You may have used the wrong replacement handle as the wood has a perpendicular collar, and your shovel head shaft collar is beveled diagonally. Viewers, won't get a good seating of the shovel head unless they get diameters tight so as to have good surface contact throughout the neck.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Год назад
Thanks for that, I think this may have been the only style available at that time, my Uncle bought it. Looks like I needed a bent hollowback handle to fit perfect. Have never seen one of those locally. That would have been a perfect replacement for that head though. Thanks for pointing out 👍
@dannythebeerman
@dannythebeerman Год назад
@@JonnyDIY i think you meant a razorback, (one that doesn't have a collar). Im challenged with finding the right handle also, I haven't seen any good examples on how to install a solid bent into a shovel. I figure they must saw the insertion end against the grain so it becomes more flexible making the end not solid and maybe soak in water for flexibility and trimming a little off to help the bend not break

That shovel did not have a point. A "spade shovel" should have a point. I also bevel the edge and they slice through dirt and roots like a hot knife through a stick of butter
