Ever broken a shovel handle? Here is one way you can fix it up! We used dried wildwood ash to carve out a rustic handle, rivet it securely in place and plant a tree.
We have propagated various fruit and nut trees to sell this winter. We have searched far and wide to provide the very best cultivars for the homestead or front yard!
Trees are available on our website at mrchickadee.com/mr-chickadee-...

I haven't made a T handle like that, but I've made a D handle by sawing, steaming and bending. That has been on my videos to make list for a long time. There is also the old style of carved D handle that has to start with a wide piece of wood.
@MrChickadee
@MrChickadee 9 месяцев назад
D is probably bit more comfortable to use, but way more involved to make, and I needed to get to planting! lol If I made a D I would use the steam bending method, the single piece seems a bit wasteful and weaker.

Great job on the handle! You do beautiful work and the videos are so relaxing. Just one thought. I'm not a professional landscaper, but I have planted many bushes and small trees over the years. It looked like you may have dug the hole to deep. My understanding is you don't want to bury the trunk in the dirt, but get it just above the ground level otherwise it can effect the growth and eventually the lifespan of the plant. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comment. I learned to bury the graft from Englands Nursery, and who have planted their 30+ acre orchards of fruit and nut trees this way for over 30 years now with great success. Its also worked well for us over the past 10 years.

I guess it doesn’t matter as much for the high canopy rootstocks, but when buried this deep, weak rootstocks lose their dwarving potential. Great video as always!

I have been considering cutting off the handle of a "spade" shovel I have......it never gets used, mainly because it is built for someone MUCH shorter than I. At 6'3" tall, I HATE having to bend over to use the spade.....so it just sits in the shed.

I was wondering if you were gonna wedge the T handle. I've seen a lot of commercial shoves with just a brad shot haphazardly through. As if that's gonna take the abuse. :)) Good work! Also, much better than the Y handle, i've never liked those and they can really wear your fingers out if you dig for a while. They never seem to manage to be the right size. Either too wide and thus the handle breaks, or too narrow.

Do you think you'd ever build a shave horse? Or does your bench have all that covered? It's just such a comfortable way to do that kind of work and maybe that's the genesis of the shave horse, old guys like me wanting to work on stuff longer but not standing up.
