My Stihl dealer here in Canada wanted 24$ rope included for this ‘repair’. Bought the rope for 0.95$ and changed it myself in less than 10 minutes because of your video. Thank you.

Previous owner put an aftermarket recoil assembly on my used Stihl. After 2 hours of trying to feed a new rope, I've definitely learned that aftermarket and OEM are two very different things. Glad it's done.

Fantastic thanks, easy to follow, just completed replacing my pull cord on my 14inch STIHL,I cut 40 inch rope used bout 36 , you can actually tell how much you need when the wheels full and pulls and rewinds easily. The only reason I mentioned the rope is a comment about length! might not have the whole old peice as the dilemma I found my self in ! Cheers!

Another very important tip is to make sure the rope bottoms out before the spring does or you'll break the recoil mech. After rewinding the rope, pull the rope until it bottoms out. Then try to move the recoil pulley CW by hand. It should be able to turn at least a 1/2 turn. If it can't, the rope is too tight.
@Pondicherryhotel
@Pondicherryhotel 3 года назад
Took me sometime to understand what you said, but hands on it i realise the spring was too tight, and could lead failure soon. i rewind it with less tension. now the spring effect is perfect. good advice . thanks from India Stihl ms180

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ru-vid.comUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

This is a great video for a bigger saw. Smaller saws don’t have that much room between the housing and the spool and it’s nowhere near as easy as “line it up with the hole, push it in, grab it with the needle nose pliers, voila”. Could you please do one showing how you get the standard rope into the smaller saws? That’s what I need. I just wasted an hour and shredded the outer part of my new cord trying to fit it in the saw and yes- it’s the same size pull cord the saw came with.

I agree with the other comment that it would’ve been good to mention that the size of the cord was crucial. I bought one at the local Ace Hardware because the stihl dealership was closed for my stihl 461. It took me a little over half an hour just to try to get the cord through the little plastic hole and back up through. What I finally ended up doing was heating the cord and rolling it until it was small enough to go in and then fishing it out with a dental tool. Much more difficult than I expected in what otherwise is a truly stupid simple repair. The average person with the average tools would not get past this. What’s funny is the replacement cord was not appreciably bigger either:/

Can someone explain why my Stihl 038 model tears the starter cord out of my hand when I am attempting to start it. Is there a video on this problem. I believe it maybe out of timing. I need a video on how to fix this problem before I loose my fingers. Ouch!!
@Rottidog68
@Rottidog68 4 года назад
Take the starter recoil off & clean it. Steves Small Engine on YT has a video about common issues like this. Sounds like the pawls aren't retracting properly so when the engine kicks, it grabs the pawls. Could just be dirty or the spring/s may be broken that hold the pawl/s in.
