What’s up guys today we are working on a leaking tire valve, and we are going to replace this valve without removing the tire from the rim, this is especially handy for doing a valve stem repair out in the field. This method works great for ATVs that are used heavily in the woods were sticks and stones may break the valve stem clean off, works great for lawnmowers and automotive tires as well this will not work for TPMS equipped vehicles that have the sensor in the valve stem hole

Why change the valve when the valve is not causing the problem, the leak is caused by corrosion around the hole in the rim that the valve passes through.
@THEMOWERMEDIC1
@THEMOWERMEDIC1 3 месяца назад
I shouldn’t have to explain why but…..Easy anwser! Because if you’re out in the field, and you are on a four wheeler, car or 4x4 truck and a stick, rock or staub breaks the valve stem. You need a way to fix it without breaking the tire down. Who cares about rust around the hole you’re just fixing a broken valve stem. Not because it’s leaking. This will at least get you home.

He showed you with the soap that the valve stem leaked in just one direction. It had a crack at it's thinnest part. An alternative fix that I've done is completely deflate the tire and goober up the valve stem with Black RTV. Not the safest thing for highway use.

Tip- in colder climates, use a heat gun,or boiling water, to warm up the valve stems to help soften the rubber,for removal and for the refit. Excellent tutorial, thanks for taking the time to show us! You can do this with vise grips, or good chicken leg pliers in a pinch,use a punch or small screwdriver to help work the new stem in.. 👌🙏

I was just going to say,, any corrosion, around valve stem hole,, game over if not removed... and treated. Typically the bead zone of rim also has corrosion. Tire removed, scrub tire bead with wire wheel of embedded rust scale in the rubber of bead, and if present, it will allow slow leak. Cheers

@Philscbx

@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Right, of course not on new wheels. The point is strictly when corrosion is present on steel rims and not removing it first. So those who attempt repair, the cure is simply restore rim fully, the bead zone and stem hole, then recoat with good rust preventive measure. Otherwise if step is skipped, some will simply have an ongoing bad day,, and it's a crisis out on the road. Or your lawn looks like crap, all scalped down to dirt on one side every path with tire leaking. Cheers

That's pretty cool. I've changed a lot of tires and valve stems in the past. This would have come in handy a bunch of times. The only thing that I would have done differently is to check the hole to make sure there aren't any sharp edges causing the stem to fail. You could lightly dress the edges of the hole with a small round file or a bit of emory cloth.
@THEMOWERMEDIC1
@THEMOWERMEDIC1 2 года назад
I’ve never in my 43 years of life ever seen anyone dress a valve stem hole.
@tinamcgarrah7794
@tinamcgarrah7794 2 года назад
Maybe a wipe down of the hole with a shop towel then a little silicone spray lube on the towel to coat the hole for ease of slide through of valve stem. BUT I personally wouldn't remove any of the holes inner circumference with anything, actually you could be causing more of a chance for a leak there. Just my 2 cents worth , a man can do whatever he wants with his own property though!
@oh8wingman
@oh8wingman 2 года назад
I appreciate what you say but I would be more concerned with shards of rubber and possible corrosion on the back side of the hole breaking the seal. It might be an idea to make a small scraper out of an old Allen key that could be inserted through the hole so the back side could be scraped clean before installation.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Changed a lot of tires, and done a lot of leak repairs involving replacing the valve stem and having to clean the valve stem hole. More so with aluminum wheels than steel, but sometimes there’s a sharp burr on the steelies that will slice your new stem and reintroduce that leak you just repaired. I’ve even had to drill out the TR 413 style hole for the larger .625 TR 415 style valve stem where rust had eaten the hole edge. While this would be handy in the field, I’d rather break the bead in the shop. You just know someone out there is going to ram that hook through a tube and either push the stem into the wheel or destroy the tube.

@thekingsilverado3266
@thekingsilverado3266 Год назад
The seated bead on an ages old Mower tire and rusty old rim can be a daunting challenge and in most cases the mower tires are cheapo nylon so if U try to break the bead the tires rip and tear. In most cases a real shop vs a home owner consumer... A shop will put a tube in the tire we don't want the thing coming back in 2 weeks. Also that is to say how many times a shop will replace a leaking stem and then the tire starts leaking someplace else. 43 years of hind sight is crystal clear.

I'm an ex tyre fitter, at home I have two tyre levers and a bead breaker lever ( claw shaped ) Dunlop brand I believe? I got it in the early eighties ,any way, you clatter the claw lever with a club hammer at the top of the "claw" around the bead moving it around til the bead breaks down, then you'd take one tyre edge off using the levers to change the valve,----- you have to work for it,and you'll sweat , but you don't need fancy machines.

Rough on the bead to break and spin off to access the stem from behind. The only drawback I could see is if the reason the stem was leaking in the first place is if there was rust/corrosion in the sealing face of the stem bulb.

I am so happy that I stumbled upon this video! I have a box trailer that has been sitting by the side of my house for years, that I use as a shed. Both of the valves are dry rotted (and the tires had gone flat ). Recently, I had to move the trailer away from the house so that the siding could be replaced, and I temporarily got them to seal by adding e6000 adhesive around them, knowing that I wasn't going to be using the trailer in the road any time soon. However, being able to replace the damaged stems without having to take the tires off and bring them to a tire shop is going to be worth its weight in gold! Thanks so much for sharing this! 🎯💯👍😉😎

Thanks for the demo, great presentation. I had an inkling regarding the nature of this kit beforehand. One limitation, however: kit seems straightforward for stamped steel rims where the material thickness is gonna be maybe 1/8" max. Have you used this on thicker material rims, such as aluminum with 1/4" and even thicker material in the valve stem seating area? Have you ever used it on passenger cars?

Great tool! However, what if the stem is leaking because of corrosion from an aluminum rim? I've found the corrosion needs to be removed before a stem will seal.
@acdii
@acdii 2 года назад
Wire brush it once the stem is out. Usually the flaking from corrosion causes the leak, so use a round wire brush to scrub the hole and knock the flakes off. Get some clear coat, the stuff used for paint touch up with a brush and slather some on and let dry then install the new stem.

I usually clean off the corrosion, and then use bead sealer on the valve stem. Works like a charm.

I'd be worried that the extractor tool would burr or damage the hole in the wheel resulting in leaks. I was hoping you were going to do a leak test with snoop or soapy water after installation.
@davidkeeton6716
@davidkeeton6716 2 года назад
You can just pull the old stem out or off or cut the old stem off and leave the inside part in there. It doesn't weigh much so not really a balance issue, and it's rubber so it won't hurt anything bouncing in there. Then check and smooth out the hole with a rat tail file if necessary.

Well, let me say two things about this. Once the valve is installed, before you screw the cap back on, inflate the tire and check for leaks. All of this works on a simple steel rim. If you have pressure monitors in your wheels, this will not work.
