Replacing the alternator on my 2011 Mercedes S550 4Matic this applies to all S series Mercedes from 2006 to 2012 W221.
This was my first time replacing an alternator on a Mercedes. I'd rate this Job a 5/10 in toughness. If you have the correct tools it's a straight forward job. What makes it difficult is the amount of parts you must remove in order to get the alternator out freely.

Awesome vid. To clarify the first time you will see a warning of a red battery icon on the dash. If you continue driving (in my case I continue driving for over 3hrs) the battery will eventually drain and you will experience all kinds of warning lights on the dash ie. Check engine, SRS malfunction , parking break malfunction , navigation will shut OFF etc…once you experience those errors the car will slowly begin to lose power and within minutes the car will shut off. Once the car shuts off, it means the battery is completely drained and it will not start again. I hope this helps someone. Good luck!

Mines did everything you just stated 2 days ago had to get towed home I was hoping it was as simple as one of the batteries oh well atleast I know how to fix it and what it is.

So once I change the alternator, change the battery and that problem wouldn’t occur again?

RJack is right about on symptoms on the dash when the alternator is weak. Did you replace the alternator and the car is back to normal?

Go for it. It’s a pretty straightforward job. Make sure you have the tools I listed in the description to make it easier and get some coolant you’re probably gonna lose a good bit when you remove the hoses.

@@R3TV Ok, just checking. My S550 is undercharging at idle, but charges fine at highway speeds. Ive read on some forums that others have replaced the alternator and the issue persists. Could be due to starter solenoid or fuse relay (chinese fuses are too thin and dont give proper electrical resistance) in the passenger footwell from what I understand. Going to do a bit more research and testing before i make an attempt, but thank you for the feedback!

Yes, it came on a little before the battery went out but went away once I fixed the alternator and battery

@@R3TV ok i appreciate you replying back I just started my car this morning and the check engine light was gone after charging my battery over night I'm waiting on my alternator to come I ordered but thank you again
