I was driving down the interstate and the Land Cruiser died on me. The lights on the dash started flashing and the radio turned on and off repeatedly. Then I lost all engine power and the car died just as I was getting off the interstate. In this video we are putting a new alternator in and testing the voltage. No problem. You'll be able to knock it out no problem. The first time it took me 4 hours with filming and trying to figure everything out. The most annoying part is getting the alternator out from the bottom and then putting the new one in. It's a tight squeeze with those hoses but it does go in. I've since done the job on 3 other Land Cruisers and got my time down to just over an hour from start to finish.

Hi, good video, I need to do this as mine is dead. I’m guessing no alignment of the belt in a timing sense?

Glad it was helpful for you. The only thing you have to do with the belt is route it correctly. There is a diagram under the hood for the serpentine belt. Nothing to worry about timing wise.

@@goatsinapond yes it's quite a path that belt takes lol, definitely taking pictures before I take it off, hopefully my bolts are good, it's only got 115000 Miles on it which is pretty low for a land crusuer.. I got it imported from Japan

Hey Bud how is it running after replacing the alternator for these few months? I am having the same issue and found out my alternator is also not charging as it should. I am getting 12.2 volts when on idle with no load. When I get some good load on the car the (head lights, ac blower, rear defog, heated seats L&R) it dropped my 11.5 volts on idle..now that bumps up to 13.0v when rise the RPM's to 2000. The FSM states I should be getting 13.2-14.8 @2000 rpm.

It's going strong. Cruiser always cranks up and the alternator is steady charging. Sounds like you're due for one. I've been buying a selling a lot of land cruisers in the 200k mile range and had to replace 4 alternators so far.

I see in the comments you said you've been buying and selling older Landcruisers. I'm trying to sell my 2001 Landcruiser with 183k miles on it. Everything runs great except for the alternator needing to be replaced which just became an issue recently. Other than that, everything works great. @@goatsinapond I had it listed on auto trader but the ad expired, I work out of town and was working so much I didn’t have time to really meet anyone interested in it to show them etc. if you send me your email I’ll send you all the pictures, carfax, or whatever info you need. It was my grandfather’s he bought it new in 2001, after he passed away I started driving it in 2015. I have a work vehicle and don’t have space for it so I’d like to sell it

Alternator bolt on the bottom sheared completely when taking it out. Looks like I’m screwed lol. Gonna have to have someone weld a nut on it

Ps for anyone reading. Theirs sockets out there that cut into rounded out bolts to extract ‘em. No welding needed

i’m sitting at a mechanic getting this job done on my 2001 landcruiser. the estimate is 530$ for labor. i came here to the shop with the alternator. is this too much to pay ? it seems this way. they estimated 3.5 hrs plus the 30mins to check the alternator

My local mechanic estimated it at 3-4 hours as well. We were able to negotiate the rate down to $250 but we also know the guy personally and bring him lots of work. $540 does seem steep to me. You could always try to negotiate.
