How to Replace an Insinkerator Badger 5 Garbage Disposal

I noticed recently that there was water under my kitchen sink and I wasn't quite sure where it was coming from, until I happened to be looking for something while the water was running. Water was dripping from the bottom of my garbage disposal. It still functioned but apparently there is a seal inside that can wear out. You can replace the inner seal but for the cost of a new disposal, you may as well replace the whole thing.

Excellent upload! Horrible music! At first, I was really trying to watch and concentrate on the video and what you were doing. I asked myself, why couldn't he have added some thinking music to this? I would like to thank everyone for watching my videos. I wanted to drop a message in here to apologize for the music. Some like it but most dislike it. I use music in all of my videos because I always have kids and/or dogs making noise while recording. There’s not a great selection of good music to use so I just pick something, with the thought that the viewer can turn down their volume if they don’t want to hear it. Thank for video. I did it in one hour. Additional comments: Used a socket wrench to remove bolts on drain pipe. Used a pile of books and magazines to prop up disposal. Used a shorter flat head screw driver because my space was limited. Used a head lamp for light. Used two allen wrenches to move to attach disposal.

Your video was high quality. You showed exactly what happened at each step. I forgot to mention I used liquid wrench on the bolts, which were too tight to use a flat head screw driver without stripping

Do you need to remove the old flange from the the drain hole or can you hook the new disposal up to the existing one?

You don’t have to remove the flange but since you’ve got it all apart, you may as well go the extra mile and replace the gasket and plumbers putty because they will likely start leaking before the new disposal goes out again. Then, you’re tearing it all apart again.

Im replacing the Insikerator for other brand and its necessary remove all the existent hardware. That tiny ring under the metal piece is not visible in this dark cabinet. Very useful video!!! Thank you

Actually another youtube gave me this suggestion: use a car jack with a cutting board on top to raise the disposal and lower it. I could do it by myself!

Ours lasted almost twenty years. It succumbed to a crack in the plastic upper housing. Induction drive is the secret to these disposer's longevity.

I will say thanks for the video, in addition putting that ring back on what a nightmare. Even with my son helping me I was getting frustrated... eventually (after about an hour) I had to use duck tape to tape the pieces to the underside of the sink so I could use both hands to get that ring back on. I was also a little concerned the disposal I bought didn't come with cardboard or a washer where the metal meets the underside of the sink, so I'm curious to whether that will eventually start to leak

Thanks for the question (and the compliment). I don’t see any reason you cannot use the same flange, if it’s in good condition. Just be sure it’s all sealed properly and you should be good to go.

You used a big wire nuts, that's why it keeps on turning and doesn't get tight. You should used the smaller wire nuts, the wires are size 14 awg I believed??

My badger 5 only lasted for 5 years .I replace it with badger 7 so at least will last for 7 years.They don't break they just rust and leak on the plate where food is grinded.So try to buy one with stainless plate.

My badger5 came with a power cord can it be removed and hardwired?

You should be able to remove it. As you see in the video, it was somewhat difficult to get the cord out but it can be done. Also, you will want to use a romex connector or some type of grommet to protect your wire when you hardwire the disposal.
