Pretty helpful. Thanks! I just replaced one today. One tip for everyone which was missed by this video is that, you could screw the L-pipe in first before securing the unit to the sink bracket. This would spare you from struggling to install the L-pipe behind the unit out of sight.

Or, just use the old L-pipe and simply replace the gasket which comes with the new model. Never fool with the old L-pipe or PVC connector at all.

I had a Badger 5 and was able to use the same top mount for the Insinkerator Evolution Select Plus. All my connections aligned just fine as well! Going to save new top mount for when I remodel kitchen and get new sink. Thanks for video, super helpful in removing my old unit!

A glass juice glass slipped out of my hands and fell into the disposal. Your instructions were great! I was able to remove the disposal and the seal on top to retrieve the glass unbroken. Hooked everything back up, no leaks and we are good to go. I now know I’ll be able to change unit out when it fails. Thank you!

Great video & most applicable retry application, Badger 5 is highest selling disposal in the US. Perfect step by step walk through & details in text where important (turn off elec breaker, punch dishwasher plug, etc). People who are 👎 on this video just aren’t handy, don’t get it & need to pay someone. Thanks for the vid

A step stool under the disposal when screwing or unscrewing the collar will help not having to lift or lower the heavy disposal so far while lining it up straight. A screwdriver might not be able to apply enough force on the hose mounting screws so a socket will also fit the hex screwheads allowing more force.

@@TheBoxBox920 A Badger 5 is heavy, when twisting it on or off the collar, and can be tricky if you are lying on your back and reaching upwards to the sink. Therefore placing a short step stool (about 8 to 12 inches tall) under the sink connection will help raising it and lowering it only a short distance as you try and line it up to twist the Badger onto or off of the collar. Or something else to act as a platform if you don't have a 'step stool'. The hose connector screws are slotted hex. A slot screwdriver will not put much force on the screw. A hex wrench (end wrench, or socket and ratchet with short extension) will make the job much quicker. Also it will allow tightening the screws tight enough where they won't leak. Badger makes a flexible pipe that bends and expands to match the disposal outlet to line up to your pipes. InSinkErator FDT-OO on Amazon. FDT-OO can be pushed to make it shorter than your old connector pipe, or pulled to make it longer than your old pipe. It also bends to move it up/down or sideways.

Great video. My 1994 1/2 HP Badger 5 model finally died last week. Will do the install myself and go with another 1/2 HP Badger 5. Nice to know that in going with the same model, should not have to deal with the attachment that attaches it to the sink. One thing, on mine, the power cord appears built in. I just plug it in to the electrical outlet under the sink. Will see what the new model is like.

Great video. Watched it once and was able to replace my disposal very quickly. Would've taken less than 30 minutes, but I got one without a plug and had to go back to Lowes. Then cord I got didn't have black/white. It had grooved=neutral and smooth=hot.

Thanks this helped me so much wife even helped, Didn't have to change the top part above disposal, New one screwed right on the spot the old one came off. Don't forget to remove the plug if you have a dishwasher i forgot but caught it in time.

Thanks. I appreciate the video. However, I did upgrade from the Badger 5 (1/2hp) to the Badger 900 (3/4hp) because they both hooked up the same and the 900 model was on sale at Home Depot and actually cheaper than the 5. But the biggest plus was the 5 only had a 2 year warranty but the 900 has a 6 year warranty. I just switched them out. After watching your video it turned out pretty easy.

Tip: Unscrew the P-Trap on both ends to be able to remove the disposal unit without having to reach back and unscrew the pipe adapter to the unit. That's why the P-Trap has 2 screw ends. After you mount the new unit, you then reassemble the p-trap.

So I'm doing the dishes at 10:00 PM. Shoes are wet for some reason. Crap...something is leaking. Check under the sink and find my Badger 500 is leaking like a sieve. I hop on RU-vid to look at my options. I watched a video of a badger 5 to badger 500 replacement and it was terrible. The guy explaining the process had no business doing this relatively simple job. Your video started playing automatically right after his crappy video. I was cracking up when I heard "hey guys, Joe back again with another episode of gettin junk done" thanks for tips in the video. If I run into trouble I'll call you or your pop!

FINALLY, I think I got it, the part at 4:26 where you attach the garburator (I like the Australian word) to the sink. My mistake had been in trying to line up all the "loops" on the metal ring attached to the garburator to the hooks on the metal attachment to the pipe coming from the sink before rotating it clockwise. It also helped to run the video speed at 1/4....several times. Well, I never claimed to be a mechanical engineer. LATER: I still can't do it. I can't line up the parts so that they will be engaged when I give a hammer tap. I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble, because I have done this before.. Well, I'll be back. The damned thing's heavy. Sun Feb 28, 4:42 PM: AMAZING!!! I bought a scissors jack for only $18.00 It works fine, and certainly removes the main difficulty: holding the damn thing up to make the connections, but I STILL can't line up the parts. Well, I don't have much patience with these sort of things, so I'll try again tomorrow. Somehow, this reminds me of Macbeth: Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace until the last syllable of recorded time....Now that's high class plumbing. I'd prefer successful plumbing, though.

(Thu Mar 4, 1:26 PM): I shouldn't be haven't so much trouble. I must have damaged or lost an important part while removing the disposer. Anyway, I'm now trying to remove the parts that go through the sink itself. You know, the round stainless steel part that fits flush with the bottom of the sink, and the part under the sink that connects to the pipe coming from that part. I can't separate the two right now. Am I supposed to be able to unscrew the lower part?

I removed my Badger 5 1/2 HP garbage disposer from my sink,, but I have not been able to put it back. I've tried many times, but I always fail. However, if I can't succeed today, i will buy a new one on the theory that I must have damaged the old one while removing it in a way that prevents me from reinstalling it. Here are the precautions/steps I think I've been taking and will certainly use again: (1) Make sure the unit is directly under and centered with the connection above (2) Raise the unit as high as possible before trying to connect it with the above connection. (3) Make sure that the unit is as level as possible (4) Proceed slowly and carefully (OF COURSE!) (5) Align the parts in question exactly as you show in your video.In other words, rotate the part until it is in the same position in relation to the part above as is shown in your video. Thirty minutes from now, I'll be smiling or ordering a new Garburator from Amazon. I will not delay one-minute beyond that. It's already been too long. Of course, I don't need a garbage disposal and never have, but I am not taking the easy way out by just reconnecting the plumbing WITHOUT a disposer) No, I'm in this battle to the end. (Sun Jun 6; 4:00 PM PST)

Okay, that's it. I failed again, and I really tried, repeatedly. the only interruptions were when I watched the attaching sequence twice, with full screen and slowest speed, The only thing that made me think I had a chance was when you failed on your initial attempt. (The part you were rotating was forced into an un-level position. Thats what happens to me when it doesn't just fail to engage at all. Well, that was my last try. I'm now ordering a new Badger from Amazon. As I recall, this.model costs about $85,00.WHAT A RELIEF!!! (SUN Jun 5; 4:40 PM PST)

My Insinkerator Badger 5 came with the top drain assembly. But I noticed in many vids, people never bothered to replace those parts. Is it not necessary to do so? My current sink drain assembly happens to be another Insinkerator model, so I supposed I wouldn't need to take that apart either. Thanks for the upload @Gettin Junk Done.

Good video, My 11 year old Badger finally started leaking water out the bottom, I guess 11 years is really good for this model so can't complain to much, I would just go without one but planning to sell soon and most buyers want a working disposal

Thanks for the video. Definitely made replacing my disposer much easier. One thing! My new Insinkerator Badger 5 (3/4 hp) came with a hex tool. Instead of hammering out the old machine from the universal connector, the tool can easily be used to remove it, as per the installation guide. It was much easier than hammering (which did not work for me).

I am one of those people that need to go step by step with vocal instructions. While I am sure you did a great job and did it right judging by the comments, I could not get past the music. It, for me at least was very distracting and personally was not a great choice. I really wanted to get through it but could not. I have this exact one and for reasons unknown although it still works the old one started leaking like a siv and began pouring water out of the bottom despite all connections being good.

There is seals in the motor housing rust out and that allows water to flow downward right out the reset button.....there is a reason for only a 2 yr warranty. I replaced this exact model with the same model after it lasted 8 years of daily use. Badger is great

you don’t have to turn off the breaker. just make sure the switch to the disposal is off, as it should be if you’re not using it.

Do those new gaskets come with the Badger 5 or do you need to purchase them at home depot or somewhere? Mine is hardwired like this one but I see those that advertise they have a cord. Do you just take that cord off and hardwire it or are there corded and not corded ? Thanks

Thanks for the video. I just replaced mine same model and it was relatively easy! I did the same thing got the same model to eliminate headache. The old power cord was not black and white it was all gray except the green ground wire so I just connect the black wire to gray and white to other end of gray and green to ground and closed it up and plug everything in and everything works well. I don’t think it really matters Which wire connect to which as long as the green wire is connected to where supposed to be connected. Right??

One quick thing I noticed. It appears that the drain coming out of the wall is higher than the discharge on the disposal. This will create a situation where the disposal will hold water. To fix this correctly that drain line coming out of the wall needs to be lowered 3-4 inches.

This made my disposal change super easy. When I first looked at the device, I thought I was going to have to remove the mount to the sink. Glad I only had to turn the locking ring and drop it.
