Why Not RV: Episode 69 - How To Replace an RV Air Conditioner. This video I show you how to replace an RV rooftop air conditioner. This was a project I was hoping to avoid but could not be happier with how it came out. The new Unit is about 33% more efficient than the last. Absolutely Incredible. Be sure to comment below with any questions I can try and answer for you!!!

No mention of a gasket or seal, that’s my main concern as I’m preparing to swap out my Coleman Mach that died in year 2. Thanks for the video.

There’s a foam gasket that goes between the unit and the roof.

nice video: I have a class B when it rains I have water intrusion though AC. I'd like to remove the roof AC patch the hole. concerned about the wiring effecting the furnace operating bc the thermostats wiring goe's though both AC & thermostat. thanks

It shouldn’t effect it but definitely depends on how the system is setup.

When I watch other videos showing RV dealers installing similar AC units, they are using a ton of caulking, sealers, etc. What keeps water out of your installation? Also, how much quieter is the HOUGHTON compared to your old DOMETIC?? Half as noisy?
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV 2 года назад
I would say it’s close to half as loud. Maybe even more. It’s a super significant difference. The foam gasket is all you need to seal it when installed properly. Proper tightening of the bolts that suck the unit down is all that’s needed.

I notice you have vents in your roof as do i! I want to do the same as you, and not use the venting. Do I need the “thick roof kit” ?
@WhyNotRV

Not that I know of. I believe the thick roof is significantly thicker

Unfortunately I ended up selling that RV. I will say that while I had it… that unit ran great, quite and a huge improvement of efficiency.

Did it come with a rubber base? Keeping water out from underneath??
@WhyNotRV

No you typically you need to buy the foam gasket separately

Trying to figure out if this is a good replacement for my Coleman Mach. I noticed you have AC ducting. Does the unit work with your AC ductwork? If it does, are you also able to open vents to cool just the bedroom?
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV Год назад
They make them in both versions. Ducted and non ducted
@rob1484
@rob1484 Год назад
@@WhyNotRV I understand that. I'm asking about the ducted version. On my existing I can open vents on the unit for extra cooling to the room (bedroom). Can the ducted Houghton do that?
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV Год назад
I’m not 100% but I believe the ducted version is ducted only

I just installed a RecPro 2801 ( 9500BTU, $1100 ) on a 2012 Keystone Springdale 179. My roof is 5" thick, so I needed the thick roof kit, which worked fine. It's little tricky to change the duct to the longer one, make sure you screw it out in the correct direction, which was clockwise for me. Otherwise, you end up tightening it and it's very difficult to remove. Putting the new one on is a little tricky, but after a few tries I got it. My old AC was a Dometic Brisk II. This new one is dramatically quieter. However, I hoped to run it off a single Yamaha EF2000is ( 1st generation), and it did not work. Later I took the cover off and found out the "locked rotor amps" is 52A! So, there is no soft starting in this thing. At least it’s less than the 62A of the Brisk Air. Looks like mounting a SoftStartRV will be tricky, I might do it. Have to mount it under the outside air fan. I suspect they say "does not need a soft start" because it does not have a loud "thump" when the compressor starts. A soft start can fix that with any AC. The reason this one does not thump is the excellent mounting of the compressor on springs that isolates it from transmitting compressor sound to the RV. When I saw that SoftStartRV has a wiring diagram for this unit, I knew it must need a soft start. I was able to measure the inrush current with a special meter, and it showed 48A, close to the 52A on the label. So far, the highest running current I have measured is 6A, but others have reported 9A. Unfortunately we have had a very cool summer so far, so I have not had a chance to see how well it cools our small 18' trailer. But, the prior 13500BTU unit was clearly far larger than needed, so I am confident this will work fine.

Lots of info in here for others to consider. Hope you can get a soft start on it nice and clean and be good to go

Our camper shorted out yesterday and I smelt a burnt electrical smell and saw smoke. It was the air conditioner. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but will the wiring need to be replaced as well as the air conditioner? :^) if the wiring does need replacing, how do I go about that? Haha, thanks. Love your channel! Happy camping
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV Год назад
So I definitely can’t tell you if the wiring may need to be replaced just off this information. You need to establish what it was that smoked and got damaged. If it was the wiring connection from the circuit panel to the air conditioner and that got damaged, then you might need to be replacing it or at least cutting off the end of it if there’s enough excess. If it was within the air conditioner, then should be no issue with the existing wiring.

Electricity at rv parks is usually to be free who cares about the solar when in an rv park?
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV 2 года назад
That depends on what type of camping you do. Staying park to park with no intentions anywhere else. Solar isn’t for you unless you are staying long enough (monthly rate typically) that electric is monitored and you pay for it… or our case where we try to avoid rv parks and work where there is no power
