Just got the 5500+ hour notification on my W1080ST, have the replacement bulb & housing ready to go, and your video has given me the confidence to tackle the job. Thank you, Mike.
I'm here June 9, 2023 after my W1070 bulb exploded. We've been running the projector since our daughter accidentally hit our TV with a Nintendo Switch controller and sent it to the TV afterlife. Same bulb, my projector was manufactured Feb 2013 so a full 10 years!
Yay, mine also exploded only after 10 long years and we've never had a TV.. Honestly I never even noticed any performance drop. That said we moved to a house with a basement 2 years ago so we mostly felt that the image quality improved!
Thank you very much for the clear, step by step process shown here. I’m terrible at DIY stuff, but was able to get this right the first time and all works perfectly!
Nice video, took less than 10 minutes. The previous one had 5550 hours on it and was still going but I went ahead and replaced with the warning notice, to avoid the explosion, love this projector.
Thank you so much for this. My InFocus projector lamp exploded now. I had watched about 867 movies. Don´t really know yet how many hours my lamp was in use, but I hope I can change to a new lamp.
I have to have this projector upside down in my current setup. After changing the lamp, the lamp will sometimes lift off the power supply. I notice that if I screw the one screw too tight on the lamp, it'll lift the other side pretty easily. So I left it a bit loose, and made sure it was on solid. Couple days later, it fell out again. I came to this video thinking that I may have missed something when installing, if the other side needs to be tightened somehow, but no such step it looks like. Right now I put a little something in between the lamp and the plastic covering and hope it doesn't lift off again. I never had this problem with my first lamp.
Sorry this is a bit late, but the problem with aftermarket "non-branded" lamps for projectors, is the fit and finish isn't always perfect. Having deal with off-branded parts not fitting well, or going in properly like the original is the major downside and why they're so cheap. I suggest, if your budget allows it, to find a company that sells the correct bulb for it (tons of online suppliers). While your fix is temporary, its worth perhaps chasing down an exact replacement, so you avoid shorting out the projector from the lamp gaining/losing contact.
i just replaced the lamp on my benq HT1085ST. After it plays for 2-3 minutes, it shuts down and I get a solid Red Power light. Any ideas? after a few minutes it comes back on with the some settings reset - volume/sound is back on, and exit sound, but not things like rear/front/ceiling etc. Help!
2023 and my original lamp is going strong. not sure on how many hours. but I bought this projector jan 2014. I am replacing it with a new sony 4k laser projector. but want to install a new bulb to use this as a projector for fun.
I love how no one has talked about mercury contamination that is always present when a bulb explodes. It’s toxic and requires care and attention to detail for cleanup. Plus a projector bulb should never be allowed to reach the point of explosion. All projectors have an hours used function and it should not be ignored or allowed to exceed the hours of life the manufacture expects. If your machine is rated for 2000 hours for example you really should be ordering a new lamp at about 1500 hours. Once the lamp starts to show dim picture or slight brightness fluctuations the projector shouldn’t be sued till the lamp is replaced .

Max Jacobi Mercury Contamination is not a hazard, infact, Mercury by itself is not a hazard at all, it is the Mercury Vapor that is deadly so don’t sniff any Mercury, since Metal Halide Arc Tubes are sealed (yes these lamps are Metal Halide) it is impossible for any sort of Mercury or Mercury Vapor to escape unless the Arc Tube explodes (because Metal Halide lamps have a nasty habit of exploding sometimes at the end of their life, but these are XMH or Xenon Metal Halide lamps so it is VERY unlikely for an XMH lamp to explode).
Hey mike, I’ve gotten the +5500 hours picture when I turn on my projector and it had begun being loud when I would turn it on so I bought and installed a new bulb. It’s working well but it still makes the loud noise and still shows the get new bulb picture. Any wisdom on that?
If it is loud either one or more of the fans in the Projector have died or the Colorwheel might be dead, as for the message you need to reset the Lamp Time (failure to do so might result in the Projector becoming unhappy and shutting down at random times to prevent the Lamp from Exploding)
How to replace your lamp */spends 4 minutes unpacking the lamp/* helpful video but showing people how to open a box and remove packing peanuts with one hand while you hold the camera is a little unnecessary.
My projector is mounted to the ceiling (upside down). Is there any reason you would take it down? Looks like the job would be doable in place. What do you think?
I don't see a reason to take it down, there is only two screws to remove (1 flat head screw which holds down the plastic covering, and the second philips screw holds the lamp cage in itself)
How do you find the model number to order the bulb? I cannot find the model number...this was a hand me down from a friend. Your projector looks exactly like mine.
Antonio Bustamante hello this is what I ordered, CTLAMP LCD Projector Lamp Replacement 5J.J7L05.001 with Housing for Benq HT1075 / HT1085ST / W1070 / W1080ST www.amazon.com/dp/B017N1INVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LC2LAbB4GWGX4
help me please I opened up my projector because when I dropped my projector the glass from the bulb went in the blower fan and when I removed the glass and put the projector back together it won't turn on? what did I do wrong
@@MikeSimon no lights at all when I try and turn on the projector no fan sounds either I'm not sure if I unplugged anything that's connected to the power could I send you pictures and could you take a look at it?
Mine’s also a BenQ W1070, doesn’t project anything after replacing a new bulb. The ‘Lamp’ indicator stays red. I don’t know the button key combination to reset the timer, I heard there’s a way to reset it like that, any ideas?
Hello, below are the directions. Step 1Turn on the projector after securing the lamp cover. Press the "Exit" button on the projector's control panel and hold it for three seconds. Release the button when "Lamp Hours" appears on the screen. Step 2Press "Menu," then press the arrow navigation buttons to adjust the lamp hours on the display. Reset the lamp hours to "00:00". Step 3Press "Exit" to save the new lamp hour setting and start the timer over for the new bulb. Automated Reset Step 1Turn on the projector after replacing the bulb. Watch for the startup image to appear on the display, then press "Menu" on the control panel or "Menu/Exit" on the remote. Step 2Use the directional arrows to highlight the "Advanced Setup" menu. Press the down arrow to highlight "Lamp Settings," then press "Enter." Step 3Use the navigational arrows to highlight "Reset Lamp Timer," then press "Enter." Step 4Highlight "Reset," then press "Enter" on the confirmation screen.
Great video! I just started getting notified to replace my lamp after 5500h, but i have been using my projector on eco-mode since day one. Do you know how many hours the lamp lasts on eco-mode?
accattone i ordered a new original lamp which was pricey but felt safer compared to getting a cheaper lamp that probably wouldnt last as long and might not be as bright or good as an original. Dont quote me on that tho cause im not an expert... anyway i replaced the lamp after maybe 100hours or so, which i kinda regret cause after doing more research it seems using the lamp until explosion is safe and i would have saved me some hours. My original lamp works perfectly tho.
accattone haha yeah it does sound a bit scary 😅 jokes aside, ive read on forums that you only need to hold the projector upside down and shake it a bit to get the glass out from the exploded light bulb
I was waiting for the same thing (an explosion). I got up to >6000 hours (the timer caps out and just says that). It never exploded, but it did get pretty dim. I didn't realise the dimness until I replaced it today. Instead of getting the whole assemblage, I just bought a new globe and took it apart to replace it.
herve rodrigue id make sure that the new lamp is properly seated (electrical connections). Make sure air intake and exhaust is not obstructed by debris.
Tbh I dont think Lines are something that a dying bulb would show. There may be smth with the projector itself, considering the W1070 has been out for 6+ Years.
Mike Simon thank you so much this video helps alot mime just went out over the weekend after 4 years of having it. I'm going to order the lamp with the link u provided thank you again.
And my practical experience was that you have to take apart the entire projector and get out all the glass shards from the previous bulb explosion. It jammed up the fans, so the projector would only run for a minute with a new bulb.
+Corey Brown here is the link to what I got, and have not had any issues at all with it. CTLAMP LCD Projector Lamp Replacement 5J.J7L05.001 with Housing ... www.amazon.com/dp/B017N1INVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_S4soGhryHLVqG
It goes up to >6000 and then stays at that haha. I just replaced mine today. Instead of buying the whole assemblage I just got the globe and took apart the lamp to replace it. The change was huge! I didn't realise that it had dimmed so much (I was waiting for the globe to explode or just die, but it never did). I read somewhere the lamp can dim up to 50% haha. Just a note since you'll probably end up with a dim globe like me!
Mike Simon i don't know... I never try to open it..It's just exploded and i think it's broken. But when i trying to turn it on... Sounds from w1070 normal like usually. Just no lights and picture out. *SorryForMyBadEnglish
Now i need to buy new lamp, i can't make a decision, ORI or OEM... What do you think? Oem easy to break or not? I read some articles, oem sometimes show a shadow... I'm very confused...
Ours passed 5500 hours too, today it exploded at 5700 hours. If you don't want to clean up lots of glass or get the crap scared out of you when it explodes. You should replace it now
So I have a question, in your experience with projectors, have you ever come across a problem of dim image, even after replacing the bulb? Any ideas or suggestions? I have the BENQ-SP820, replaced the bulb with a factory new bulb, picture is still very dim.
