Good video! But I have a question. You take a 1/4" off the measurement so there's an 1/8" gap all the way around but then it looks like you put the window in so it's actually resting on the bottom of the pane. Wouldn't that mean now there's no gap at the bottom and 1/4" gap at the top? Is that OK?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Год назад
It's ok still. It's just to allow space for expansion and contraction with the changing of the seasons 👍 it should still be able to move with the flexible sealant. You just don't want the glass to be a perfect fit or it'll break when expands

Any window and glass shop. Just bring your precise measurements into the shop and theyll cut it for you. You can bring the total opening measurements to them and ask them to cut it slightly smaller or if you can just measure old glass or total opening measurements minus 1/8-1/4 inch smaller for expansion

No weight on that window and no it had to be done from outside because of the frame is routed to have the glass sit on a lip on that side 👍
@wsmaga
@wsmaga 3 года назад
I noticed that you only used the window holding pins on the outside. What holds the window from now falling through to the inside. Does the inside need to be glazed also?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 года назад
The inside edge is smaller than the glass, so glass gets pressed against it. If you use glazing no need to put any behind glass but if you use sealant you can run a bead around before putting glass in to give it some extra seal 👍🏻

Can this be done in the wintertime or better in spring/summer?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 5 лет назад
It can be done in Winter, just make sure you check the label on the type of caulking sealant or glazing compound for the temperature youre supposed to apply. So youd want to do it in the warmest part of day. And a tip is make sure you keep it stored inside somewhere warm before applying.

@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 7 лет назад
Sorry for confusion I was saying 75 as in 0.75 or 3/4. So you want to measure the opening of the window and subtract 1/4 inch or 0.25 from each side. So if the opening is 30in x 20 in, get the glass cut size 29.75 x 19.75 inches. Good luck, hope this made sense

As someone who has had to restore dozens of windows with silicone caulking in them. Please, for the love of every beautiful old house on the market, do not use silicone caulking!!! It's not only difficult to remove well, but it causes so much damage to the wood underneath. The wood in the windows with silicone caulking was soft and disintegrating in a manner that I didn't see even on the windows whose glazing fell out decades ago. Glazing putty is the only way to go.

any advice on replacing a window on the 2nd floor? can it be done from the inside ?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
If the window sash isnt removable or its on fixed portion it may be tricky to do. If older wood frame window the metal push points need to be installed from outside. If newer type window you could apply sealer to frame and pull window in against it and tape it to frame while drying so doesnt fall out. You will need to buy window suction cup with handle to achieve the inward pull 👍🏻
@yomman123
@yomman123 4 года назад
@@JonnyDIY I have an older woodframe, so no way of avoiding the need to install and seal it from the outside? So I assume scaffolding or a ladder will be required. Did I understand correctly? Thank you for being so responsive!!
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
@@yomman123 Yes will be best to install from outside. You can try as I said with the new piece of glass and suction cup to pull against sealant from inside the house. May be best to just hire a glass company or handyman who has a ladder though. Call around for quotes and should be able to find a good price

So we busted out our windows a long time ago. We don’t have a window. How do we measure?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Год назад
Measure the total opening of the window, make sure to remove any pieces of glass that may be stuck in sides still before measuring. Then subtract a 1/4" from the length and width so they'll be 1/8" clearance around whole window 👍

Is it possible to change a window from the inside only? I don’t have a ladder to get up to the second floor from the outside.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 года назад
Only if its a newer window where you can remove the sash and work on it, other than that youll need to work from the other side. Maybe can borrow a ladder, or I see them for sale all the time cheap on craiglist, or Facebook marketplace, offerup

@@JonnyDIY thank you so much I appreciate you answering so quickly. It's a hundred year old house and the windows don't look too new. One is plexiglass and the other is glass. The owners of the house just didn't fix things correctly. The plexiglass pushed out from the window pretty easily. I tried to fix it but ended up breaking a piece off instead. I'll see if I can't borrow or rent a ladder. Also means I'll have to talk to downstairs neighbors. They aren't the friendliest, the ladder would have to go in front of their window too. They'll survive.

Can u buy new points? Where do u get them?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
Window and glass shops will usually give them to you free when you buy a new piece of glass, just ask if they forget. And if you already have glass you can get them at Home Depot or Lowes or any Hardware store. Ask for Window Glazing Points
@Enpassantful
@Enpassantful 2 года назад
I think you should have put a thin bead of putty around the frame before putting the glass in, to give it something to sit in.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 2 года назад
Yes you can put sealant around edge before putting glass in. But if using window glazing, it just goes on outside of glass after glass installed 👍

Yes but you wong have any of the insulation qualities with that section if you do that. To get that youll have to go to window shop and they can order you replacement of the part that broke 👍🏻
