Today a 15 minute cooktop switch out ending going on for hours when I realized the replacement was larger than the hole in my granite. I had to grind off one side of the granite opening for the new cooktop to fit. Cleanup took longer than the rest of the project!
Previous model was Amana replacement is Whirlpool, both made my same people.

Thanks for sharing! Its so reassuring to see that 15 minute projects turn into hours long projects for others as well. 😊 End result tooks good!

So true! It seems like everything I attempt turns into a comedy of errors! I have 200+ videos, but 200+ that never made it to RU-vid. :-). Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I had exactly the same problem, this gave me the confidence to go ahead and try to fix it. I used a Rotozip tool with a "diamond tile and countertop" bit, it's like a Dremel on steroids. I set up containment with plastic sheeting but quickly abandoned it in favor of having someone hold the shop vac right next to the tool.

Thank you for making this video and sharing your knowledge. It really helped me understand what needs to be done in my kitchen. Fifteen years ago, I had a cooktop and granite countertop installed. The cooktop has failed and no one makes the same size cooktop anymore.

This exact exact scenario happen with our downdraft cooktop. Now we have to cut the granite. I am scared to mess anything up and not handy.

Thanks for the video. We have the same cooktop and absolutely hate it. It is 'electric' not induction. So, we bought a 36" induction cooktop to replace this 30" cooktop, since we have a 36" base cabinet. It's on its way. We have to widen the opening on each side by 2 1/4". The front-to-back dimension is ok though. So, I'm just starting to research the cut I have to do. I have drill holes in granite with a diamond core bit, but have never done a cut like the one that is required. I still might hire it out, but I'm gonna see about DIY.

@@nhojcam that’s two cuts no grinding that. I’d price it out and price out tools required. Thanks for watching!

I commend you on taking the initiative for your kitchen. I’m considering upgrading my 30” stove top to a 36” stove top. Would probably have to cut the counter too too. I’m glad to see that it’s possible to do wothoit paying a small fortune on the install.
@KingsOutdoorLife
@KingsOutdoorLife 7 месяцев назад
It is possible. Do a better job than I did on tenting it as lots of dust is created. Good Luck!

Always support this from the bottom while installing!! Never tilt it on the edge the glass will break. Ease it down slowly. The never fit lol . I own a granite countertop company. I broke a few cook tops when I started out . I go out a few times a year to fit a new cooktop. I charge 250.00 It’s terribly messy but we have saws with dust collection.

You can do it! Just remember you have a lip that hides the edges, go slow, and don't do anything to risk the rest of the slab. Let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching and subscribe.......still trying to get to 1K.

I would have 1) made a plastic wall room around the cooktop by hanging plastic sheets from ceiling and tape on floor.. 2) would have put blue masking on granite to make the line I want to follow… 3) used grinder / blade with shield on top and cut from top

Saya pasang sendiri kompor tanam dirumah tanpa pasang tumpuan. Alhamdulillah udah lebih 5 tahun g ada masalah. Pecah/retak biasanya karena si tukang bikin openingnya kekecilan, pasangnya mau flush(rata sama table top) jadi g beri space kaca untuk expand atau yang masak, masaknya kebanyakan kayak buat satu rt. Sehingga beban dikompor melebihi beban maximal yg diminta.

It be honest I do this for a living. You should have just taken a 1/8 off one side with the blade and cut once and be done without all that extra grinding. Simple and quick.
@KingsOutdoorLife

That’s what I did. I only ground the one side. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Seeing how you do this for a living, I need to enlarge the width by a full inch. Not going to grind that. Can I use a diamond blade in an angle grinder and plunge cut the extra inch out?

My 22 y/o Jenn Air had 1 heating element go bad. Sears technician comes in and says he can't do it as the cooktop is "cemented" to the granite. I saw how easily you took out the old one and I thought maybe this is just caulk or glue. I took out the old universal tool and slotted it all around the cooktop to remove the caulk/glue and the cooktop popped right off in 10 min. Nobody cements a cooktop onto the granite. I opted for repair than replace because I was afraid of exactly what you experienced. Thanks for the heads up.

Was it just me or did you hook the white (neutral) wire up to the ground wire? I’m pretty sure the white wire (neutral) should just be capped off and not hooked to anything.

I found your video today when trying to install a new cooktop. Unfortunately, I need to widen the opening by 1 inch (1/2 inch on both sides) to make the new cooktop fit, which will involve cutting 1 1/4 inch thick granite. Also, I have the same situation that the cabinet sides will also need to be cut, so what was your problem is now my problem. The question is, do I want to go buy all the tools and give it a try, or hire an installer to come fix it? Installation goes $350.00 plus cabinet modifications are extra. I don' know if I can return the stovetop for another option, but might make a call. Anyway, what a mess I have gotten myself into!

@@KingsOutdoorLife Well guy, I got her done. Turned out nice. Cut the granite with a diamond wheel for my newly acquired angle grinder and used a oscillating saw to cut the cabinets sides down. Those oscillating saws come in handy. They make cuts that were once seemingly impossible, possible. I took a cue from you and built a plastic enclosure to control the dust. Sure glad I did that; otherwise, I would have had dust everywhere and a very unhappy wife. You know how that goes.

I'm in this exact situation right now, but not nearly as lucky as you. We're replacing an induction cooktop with a propane one, just got done running all the gas lines, the LPG conversion kit, and all that fun stuff. In my case, we don't have both options, so I will have to rewire the 220 into a 110 outlet...which isn't too bad. But I went to drop the new stove in and it's not even close. We have to cut a whopping 2 inches off. I've never worked with granite before so I don't know if I trust myself to do it., and my gf would murder me if I screwed it up. Just curious....if I do decide to hire it out, do you have any idea what it might cost? Just trying to get an idea of what my options are. Awesome video by the way, you make it look easy. I subscribed.
@KingsOutdoorLife
@KingsOutdoorLife 3 года назад
Yeah that is a lot bigger deal. I don’t know where you are located, but cost will vary widely based on that. Bigger than that, is getting anyone to show up and do it. Capable, skilled people are in such high demand they don’t have time to get to the small jobs. If you know a good general contractor ask them who they could point you to. Next option would be the local hardware store. Ask them who can and will do it. Those guys are in the hardware store every day buying parts. Blessings to you and I hope it works out for you!

Diamond saw blade on grinder works fine. I use 2 hands to keep it following a masking tape line well. U could practice on a piece of porcelain tile (like12”) out side to get the feel - it’s similar feel cutting, just thinner

What grinder blade did you use? I have the exact same problem right now, need to remove 1/8- 1/16 of an inch perhaps, and am struggling to identify the right blade. I have a diamond cup I've used to gouge out concrete, but I'm worried it might chip the granite countertop. The one you used seem to work fine. What was it?

I'm sorry I don't know the brand or specs, but it was a diamond blade from my local hardware store. It was only about 1/4" thick. Thanks for watching!

Make sure the breaker is off. How many times did you say that? And what was the next thing you did??? you touched the wire.. What if you turned off the wrong breaker? What if the breaker was labeled incorrectly? Test with a meter first it could save your life. The first guy almost got killed. The panel should have been locked out.
