I’m so glad this video is still up 4 years later! You’re saving me lots of money by doing it myself. I have the same car, same broken door handle so I’m going to try this tomorrow. Appreciate this video.
Good video, BUT I think it's better to remove the adhesive of the barrier, and fold back the top corner for access, NOT to cut a hole in it and tape it later. It works well to heat it (with hair dryer or heat gun) and use a scraper or putty knife to remove a section of the adhesive bead at a time. I scraped the adhesive bead from the door, leaving it stuck to the barrier. After many door repairs, you could have a lot of taped sections with your method.
Many thanks for this video - helped me immensely with a recent door handle change! Just in case anyone else wonders though mine was for driver's side and therefore also had to switch over barrel for door lock - was straightforward but only after searching RU-vid for another tutorial video! You just needed to insert key into lock, twist and undo the exposed clip holding the barrel in place. In addition I had another rod (locking mechanism?) but switch over was exactly the same.
Do u have any idea why my remote contol central lock keep open second after i click lock. It happent after i change the door handle and think all was Good... Good video btw ...
Excellent video. I need to do this next weekend on my wife's car and you just saved me no end of frustration. Massive thanks for taking the time to put this together and share it here.
PLEASE HELP. I replaced it all the way and it opens from the inside just fine, but it seems the lock/unlock no longer engages so I can’t open it from the outside. What did I miss?
Sounds like the outside door rod is not connected. If the little plastic widget at either end breaks, as mine did, you'll find the rod keeps falling off.
Thank you so much for making this video -- other than having 2 small screws behind plug caps on the side of my door (2015 Fiat 500 Pop) which had to be removed the rest of your video was spot on. The clip which holds the rod that opens the door was a little tricky but overall between watching your video and doing the work it only took about 1 hour -- I saved TON of money -- thanks again.
Christmas Eve 2023 - Just happened to my wife's car. Not sure if I can get a new handle in time today and count it as an extra X-Mas present for her? Think she might insert it into the entrance of my rear body cavity if I do. However, like others have commented before me, thank you for taking the time to produce and post this video. I can have a go now after the break and save the cost of a garage doing it.
Excellent video, only small thing I did differently, was to remove the rod before taking out the old part. I could not get it out with the rod in place. Made it a little fiddly to refit but job done. Thanks, could not have done it without your video.
I dont know if theyre missing on other years, but there are two additional phillips head screws holding the door trim on here. (2013 500). They're behind two round plastic covers on the outside top and bottom of the door trim.
Home boy gives no information what so ever about changing the lock cylinder. If your not handy or can’t figure mechanical things out on your own do not attempt!
I like how you thought of putting tape on flat head screw to prevent scratching...I like the idea of you taping the white membrane so it stays out of the way as you work inside the panel
Hiya mate i have recently done this with my abarth however my locking doesnt now work so the door doesnt lock, you got any idea what this may be please?
Hi thanks so much for this most excellent video - I feel confident I can handle (no pun intended!) it except mine is the driver's door and has the key lock to change over - is that difficult? What will I need to do? Thanks again, Liz
I have to do this this weekend. Thanks for the tips, and what to expect. Judging by the amount of reviews on the replacement handle I bought, this must happen all the time.
Great video. I was able to fix my daughters easily. She had another rod going from the lock but no problems. But I only replaced the cheap little hinge in front of the handle. If that one breaks you do not need to replace the whole handle.
Thankyou so much for the video, never done anything like this and always have been fleeced by the dealers. Thought I would have a go and perfect instructions including the tea. Job done in 40 minutes.
I need to replace a handle on my 2016 Fiat 500X (driver’s side). I was going to be charged over $750 at a shop. Would you say it’s about the same process? Also, awesome idea with the tape on the screwdriver!🙏🏼
Thank you my English friend. The Yanks did their left (driver's) door. Had to find another video for the lock barrel. Your video did not include as much swearing as we delivered. 2 hours x son and father. All set. Could do it again in half the time. Thanks again. FIAT = Fix It All the Time
Hi. Thanks for the video. Do you happen to know the part number of the "rod" you mentioned? I am replacing a door handle as well and the rod fell down somewhere into the door and I can't find it. Thanks.
@@redcuillin this happened a while ago but it was HUGE hassle. It ended up falling into this little hole right below the door handle where the door has some sort of sealed off well that can't be accessed at all. I ended up paying a mechanic to drill through the wall of the well and find the rod because I thought it was rattling around but it turns out the noise I thought was coming from the rod was coming from somewhere else. I even took the whole door off and tried to shake the rod out which, needless to say, didn't work.
@@jamesp2293 oh wow. That sucks. I'm glad mine didn't fall down wherever that was, because I definitely dropped it about 5 times before I got it back on!
Thank you so much you explained every problem I came to and successfully installed the handle, just maybe one thing when you said it doesn’t flash with the door it would be great if you would show it just maybe future advice because this took me a while to get it but still great help! Thanks a lot
This is the second time in under 50000 kms that my driver's side handle snapped. I took it in to the shop as fiat has agreed to cover the costs for the repair as it's an ongoing fiat issue. My question is, how long do you think this job took to replace it? They're charging me 2 hours of labour at a fiat repair shop yet every video seems short & sweet. I truly think they're ripping me off. (I didn't tell them it was to be covered so perhaps they took their dandy old time) so how long from start to finish, did this take? Thank you. (I realize the video is 9 mins but there are clips cut out so I want to make sure I know what I'm talking about before I call them out on it )
I have had two 500Cs for several years and never broken a door handle. Either the Mexican built 500s are of a better quality than your Polish made 500s or else this bloke doesn't know his own strength.
5:13 Does anyone? know that black plastic piece right under his finger that you took the metal door handle attachment out of? Im trying to buy one but I cant find out the name or how to even search for it!! Thanks for any help!
Thanks for this guide, really helpful!! :) I ended up buying just the small metal hinge part off eBay and it was even easier as I didn’t take off the whole handle, managed to get the silver handle away enough from the door to fit the new metal hinge to it
Brilliant video, you made it look easy. Just wondering though, why not just replace the broken hinge part instead of paying out for a complete new handle?
@@pieterdehaer3822yes got it done. I did the driver's side which included changing the lock over but basically still the same steps. If you have a go at it and get stuck I'll give you a hand 👍
Borrowed my wife’s 500 and when I parked it as I walked away I went back to check it was locked and pulled the passenger door handle off!! This video was really useful and very simple and straight forward - well explained. Many thanks 🙏
I was able to replace my passenger side door handle fairly easily after watching this video but I found that now my door won't lock -- just on that side -- any ideas?
Thank you so much for your quick response I can see the door handle inside click close when I push the FOB but yet it doesn't lock -- it acts like it's locking -- I read something on a forum about resetting the FOB with 7 times off 7 times on but I haven't tried that yet.
All you people with strong Mams pulling door handles off lol I'll be doing the driver's side this weekend for my girlfriends. Useful video well done thank you for popping it up
