Very useful clip, thanks.Having worked as a mech in haulage, I find that the small springs in car brakes are more easily fitted using a short length of string.I used this for the spring he struggled a little with in this clip ( the top one).2 or 2 and1/2 ft of thin nylon cord round the bend on the end of the spring lets you pull the spring easily beyond the eye in the shoe that it locates in. Just pull it until its level, and push the bend into the eye with a screwdriver, very easy, and unlike the guy in the clip, you won't be out of breath!

Nice video fixbook however people should not use side cutters to manipulate the springs. Harbor Freight sells a brake spring tool or as someone suggested, needle nose pliers. Yes the springs are tough but don't take chances of causing a weak spot on the spring

Want a neat little trick on getting everything to stay in place while putting the upper spring on? Get some zip ties and make a circle, put them over the brakes and snug them up. When you try and put the spring on nothing moves around and you don't need 3 hands to do it.

It had been nearly 20 years since I last replaced drum brake shoes, and I found this video very helpful for doing the job on my 2009 Kia Spectra. I would never have thought to use wire cutters to install the springs, but it does work much better than pliers, and saved me much time and aggravation. On the second wheel I installed both hold-down springs before installing the top spring, which worked better for me. I'd probably get a special tool for installing the springs if I ever did the job again, or maybe try the string and screwdriver trick suggested by the previous commenter. Overall a very good video giving clear and concise step by step instructions. Thanks for posting it.

Before assembling on the hub assemble the shoes in the drum and set the adjuster so that the shoes are fairly tight against the drum. Keep this setting on the adjuster when you do the final build on the hub. Saves a lot of trial and error by taking the drum off and on.

jordan. thanks for the informative video. my 2001 accent has a similar system in a slightly smaller package. a washer hold down retainer tool wont fit in, a narrow vice grip must be used instead . this also means the top spring is a pistol to manipulate. but thanks to your up close video my star adjuster assemly went back on the correct side:>) many thanks barry age 72

I thought this was an awesome video. Took the laptop and had it right next to the car for reference. My only comment is on the self adjuster. I could not get the drum on first time because I had it too far out. I had to take it out and this time I pulled it all the way in. I realize it should have been out a little bit and I also realized it took me a few trips in reverse to get them adjusted but they eventually self adjusted correctly. Thanks for the awesome video. Hi, good videos, these were a big help - look here folks, if you have a Hyundai Matrix then there's a good chance the rear brakes are EXACTLY THE SAME as in this video, certainly the ones on my 2003 1.5 diesel Matrix are the same. Personally I also preferred to use needle nose pliers on the springs (as an electrician I only like to put cutting blades on things I mean to cut), also you can easily get the hold down springs off with the needle nose pliers which means you don't need the special tool. Cheers dude.

Yep, absolutely brilliant. I thought there must be an easier way but you are doing it the same way I do. I couldn't figure out the brake adjuster orientation (time 6:10) and your clip made it obvious. I've sent $10 your way and I still feel I owe you :)

Good video series over all. You are easy to understand and you keep the viewer in mind for you camera angles. Two things I would suggest: When putting brake shoes on, I have found that putting the bottom spring on works best if I do that after the put the top spring on. This allows me to have both hold-down springs in place. It also reduces the amount of the pressure I am fighting for the top spring, which is in the tightest place. The second item is that I find vice-grip needle nose pliers work better for putting the springs on. Dykes, or side cutters, can do some damage to the spring if they pushed on too hard, which tends to happen when pulling on springs. One final note I just thought of: if you plan to do your own drum brakes yourself, which I strongly recommend, it would pay to invest the $35 or and get a Brake Reset Gauge. I love to get my stuff at Harbor freight - it saves me a ton of $$$. However, they do not carry this tool - at least not at this time. The advantage to this tool is that it allows to measure the inside of the drum, then use the reverse side of it to measure how far out the shoes are. This makes it a much faster job - you don't need to put the drum and take it off several times. Once is usually enough. Thanks for the series - I look forward to seeing what else you produce! Mark

I gotta do the drums on my GF's 06 Elantra soon so this was very helpful. Is there not a hole behind the hub to get to the star wheel adjuster? I've only done drums a handful of times, and on the cars that I've done they have a little hole. Luckily, in trade school when I ordered my tools it came with all the tools to do drums brakes.

My other top tip would be wind the star wheel adjuster all the way in before fitting it, because then you don't have to stretch the top spring so far to get it in (that being the hellishly fiddly bit). And then when finished wind the star wheel out to where you need it to be with a screwdriver as shown.

3:00 Great video, but my only suggestion is to remove the wheel hub so you don't have to struggle putting the parts back together. Just remove the center cap with a flat screwdriver and tap with a hammer. Then just back off the large nut, I think it's a 19mm. The hub easily comes off and you have more than enough room to work. Given it's just one nut to remove, and it save you a lot of frustration, it's worth mentioning. I use a breaker bar and it comes loose with little effort. Then you just take a hammer and flat screwdriver to tap that little tab back into the notch to lock the nut in place before replacing the center cap.

2 critical takeaways people! Just did this for the 1st time...biggest trouble was getting that top spring back in...be prepared to swear (it's gonna' happen)...Secondly, when putting the 2 small spring fittings back on (the 3 pieces that hold each shoe to the backing plate), make sure to PUSH in and twist either direction....don't pull....and this goes for removing them too.
@Atonement-
@Atonement- 6 лет назад
And you don't need any special tool, just use needle nose pliers.
@heyoou
@heyoou 6 лет назад
Hi. I just saw the video and your comment about the top spring going back in. I swore about 10 times and gave up because I already was having back problems when doing the job and that last top spring was the last step that would complete the job. That spring is soo tight, I can barely get to an inch from the slot where you hook the other end in. Unfortunately after 1/2 hour I gave up and took a shower and will try tomorrow. Any technique or special tool for getting the last top spring on? I also had problems with the spring fittings to hold the shoes in place but after 15 tries on each shoe I was able to push the springs and turn those arrow pieces to lock, very difficult. Maybe I'm a weakling.

Wouldn't you also need to compress the brake cylinder and bleed the line? New pads will have more meat on them and won't fit inside the cylinder so you have to adjust the brake cylinder to compensate for the new thicker pads. But overall this video was fantastic!
@beverwyck1
@beverwyck1 7 лет назад
You don't need to bleed them unless you open a line or replace the wheel cylinder/caliper. Just like when you do front brakes take the top of your master cylinder and push the piston(s) back in on the wheel cylinder or caliper and the fluid will go back to the master cylinder. You may have to remove a little fluid first if it's filled right to the top.

I understand the use of adjusting the brakes before complete assembly (you might end up in someone's garden or worse) but it's called a self adjuster for a reason. It deserves a bit of attention seeing that the thread is clean and some grease put on it. that way you pump your brake before pulling out of the garage a couple of times or more, it should self adjust itself.
@beverwyck1
@beverwyck1 7 лет назад
Drum brakes don't adjust that way. The self adjusters work when you are in reverse(and moving) and apply the brakes or pull the parking brake lever.
@ashkalil1
@ashkalil1 11 лет назад
Thanks for your reply, I was referring to the Gas line if I have to clean the injectors, I am sorry it was not related to the brake job. If I have to change the power steering fluid in Elantra, do you think I can use any fluid or I have to use specific Elantra power steering fluid? Thanks.
