Wheels in video are HUNT 35 Carbon Gravel Disc wheels. Many wheels with pawl-style freehub engagement will follow a similar procedure.

Best explanation I have seen so far. The drawing was the perfect way to show the inners of the hub. Nice job!

This saves so much money considering the vast number of bearing combinations out there. It's often difficult to even find the "proper" tools for the job in the first place. And instead of sacrificing a screwdriver, you can find some that can also be used as a chisel. Their shaft goes through all the way and has a flat metal part on the end of the handle for use with a hammer. They can probably be found at any hardware store for a pretty low price compared to specialist bike tools.

Hey, I happen to have the same bike that you have. The rockhopper sport 29er and I am pretty new to bikes and do not really know how to adjust the derailleurs. I look up videos and it is pretty confusing because the derailleurs are different on the rockhopper than on the videos I have seen. I tried to use the other videos to adjust the rockhopper but couldn't end up doing it. If you could help or make a video specifically adjusting your rockhopper that would be extremely helpful. I also could just take it up to the bike shop where I bought it from and have them do it for free but I would like to learn how to do it myself.

I have same Hunt hub and am thinking that my free hub bearings are worn. Can you describe the symptoms of worn free hub bearings? I have been increasingly hearing a creaking sound that has a unique frequency, ie not very pedal stroke, goes away with coasting. I guess I could pull the free hub and feel if the bearings are rough. I am a bit surprised that 18k miles would wear them out. You make it look easy and your diagram was great!

If your wheels use cartridge bearings, generally better to replace them once in a while. They aren’t really meant to be serviceable

You can do it periodically (every 1000mi or so depending on your terrain / weather) or like me, when they audibly start to roll rough

@TheBikeSauce

I guess that’s conservative. I’ve had many wheelsets and the seal configuration will dictate how often you need to replace. These hunts, while fast rolling, seem to eat up cartridge bearings faster than others. Luckily they’re cheap

If you are going to remove them with a screwdriver, please do not reinstall those back in the hub. Furthermore, a bearing extractor and dedicated bearing press is a worthwhile investment if you are going to service your hubs yourself.

This doesnt make sense: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F9FnLxQPcZI.html it implies that inner sleeve is not pressed inbetween 2 bearings tightly and can slide easily backwards and forwards. In my Shimano freehub inner sleeve cannot move between 2 bearings.
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 4 месяца назад
If the sleeve slides axially, then it serves no purpose. In some hubs, this sleeve is more tightly compressed between the bearing than in others.
@wordpress4373
@wordpress4373 4 месяца назад
but in your example, it slides axially, otherwise you wouldnt be able to move it like that to access bearing (thats what I meant). In my hub, it only spins with bearings, I cannot move it axially. This means I could only potentialy try to push all together (both bearings and sleeve) out of the hub to change bearings, at least with my tools I have. @@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 4 месяца назад
@wordpress4373 it slides radially (out of the way) because in this case, there wasn’t a ton of axial preload on the sleeve. Other hubs have more compressive preload on this sleeve, making it a bit harder to push out of the way
@bxnny6657
@bxnny6657 6 месяцев назад
No hate or anything, but you should definitely remind people that with this sort of back alley mechanic trick you can easily brake your 2000 dollar wheelset, because the way cartridge bearings work is that they are pushed into a hub that is only a few micrometers bigger (making the bearings sit very tight) and if that bearing gets wedged in from the side then guess what, it don't sit as well.
