I had to replace my lower control arm from hitting a rock whilst wheelin at the weekend. Without this video, it would have been a tough job due to not having experienced a torsion bar suspension system in the past. All the little pointers were great. Took me about two hours to do in the street with no power tools, and the rain coming down. Thank you for the video

Random tip, if you cant get the torsion bar or key separated dont cut or hammer it apart on the truck. Just drop the control arm out and do it on a bench

I have the same wheels on one of my Rangers. I use a paint can opener to remove the center caps. Insert it into the slot, hooked side facing inward, and pull the cap off.

I used this video as my guide to doing LCA both sides. A couple of points. Use of the two arm puller was futile. Kept slipping down the flange. Since I was on jackstands tried using bottlejack to lift and rotate the key. But lifted entire car instead, did not release the key stop. Reinstalled the adjuster screw, cranked it all the way down, made a bullet shaped slug from 5/8" round, placed slug in dimple on key, reset bottle jack under dimple/slug, backed out adjuster, found key stop released and removable. I kmow the slug was not the safest technique but the flat bottle jack anvil did not seem to work. Also, the strut between the stabilizer bar and the LCA is difficult to install, impossible by one man. Got it done with help. Any tips or tricks for this? Finally one ball joint released with a couple good raps, the other resisted all blows. Started to cut stud but it seemed the heat from cutting with 3" wheel actually did the trick!

Great video! I save a shit ton of time and don’t bother fucking around with the torsion key. Index the front of the torsion bar to the LCA like you did, then support the LCA while you remove the knuckle. The LCA’s drop when you lift the truck from the frame and you can just slide them off after a second or so with the impact hammer. Slide the new LCA on keeping in mind the index mark you made on the torsion bar, bolt it on, and lower it on a jack so the LCA comes up and no special torsion key or puller needed! I did this yesterday on my own Ranger :D

I'm about to change mine also. So what you're saying is that you saved the time of not having to use the 2 jaw puller to remove the torsion bar key? In the total time this whole procedure takes, that seemed to take only a few minutes to use the puller. Unless I'm misunderstanding what your saying.

I have a turning radius issue ive heard you may have to grind edges off control arm?
@Savage1Living
@Savage1Living 3 месяца назад
I will probably not get a reply before I do this job tomorrow but, What was the point of taking the key off the torsion bar if it was just gonna go right back on the same bar. I feel like that in itself would tell you what position the torsion bar goes in the control arm as for the key only goes into the frame one way.

At what point do you add grease to the ball joint? As soon as you take it out of the box, or when you torque the control arm bolts? Also can you do the UCA and LCA at the same time or do you need to do them one at a time to make sure your bolts get torque and sit correctly?
@urielmejia3600
@urielmejia3600 6 лет назад
Adam Moscatelli you can do them at the same time. You can grease them whenever you would like the grease fitting is there for easy access for ongoing maintenance.
@jeffreyschell5678
@jeffreyschell5678 2 года назад
for those just reading this its best to grease it whenever you put weight on the suspension after everything is installed. if you grease before you could end up putting too much in there and bursting it when you put weight on it.

you forgot to fill the grease fitting ( I would say that grease fitting is going to get missed quite a lot causing the ball joint to fail ) the grease fitting needs a 90 degree angle, grease fitting facing at a 1 o'clock position so you can get the grease dun on it!!!!!!
