I did a retro fit of a fuse box on a buddies 62 VW that needs more work. I found your channel and I've been going down the rabbit hole. Thanks for putting this stuff up. We have a huge VW cult following on the big island so I'll probably need all the info you put out. Thanks again. 🤙🏽
I’m glad you found the channel and I hope you find the videos either helpful or slightly entertaining. As I’ve stated in my videos, I’m not an expert, this is just the way I’m doing things through trial and error, experience and things I’ve learned from others. Appreciate you being here 🤙
@@VWJawbreaker no need to be an expert to be good at it. You keep on making videos and we'll keep watching them. More people will gain from your collected knowledge and it'll help the community. I appreciate the info. You gained a subscriber here and I'll let the folks I know about your channel. 🤙🏽
@@TheGeekiestGuy I greatly appreciate it! I figure everyone has a different style of “teaching” and if there’s one or two people who gain some insight or inspiration then all of the time was worth it. It’s all about helping one another either from the vids or comments, we’re all in it together.
Been watching old and newer videos. I fell moving one of my VW project bug and broke my leg. Iam in Naples. I had just pulled the engine out of my driver bug, then broke my leg. I enjoy videos. Yes you show some of the same thing others do on there’s. Always good to see fellow VWists are doing on there VWs
I appreciate you watching the videos and hope you get something out of them, whatever it may be. Sorry to hear about your leg, hope it heals up quickly!!
It’s great to see you working with your son. I get a kick out of the father and son banter.you guys made that look easy. I don’t know if I could survive that heat. We have had a touch of it here and it kills my motivation
The banter comes naturally between us for some reason but we have a lot of fun together. It’s been brutal for a lot of the US this summer, not just Florida. On the flip side, not sure I can deal with all of the snow so it’s a trade off I guess. Appreciate you as always.
Hey, there Garry &Levi, great working together dad and son👍🏻, so Levi is learning a lot during that time 🛠Job well accomplished keep up the good work together cheers. 🇺🇸✌🇳🇴greetings.Hubertus
Hi Hubertus!! He’s spent a ton of time with me working on VW’s over the years. Want him to enjoy working on things for himself, problem solving among many other skills he’s been learning. Hope he looks back at the vids later down the road and is proud of the work he did. You’re doing great on your T3. Appreciate you as always and stay safe out there!
@@VWJawbreaker Thanks, Garry yes the VW T3 is coming well along, and Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. have a Great weekend. Greetings, Hubertus.
Gary, another great informative video, easy to understand, and has some excellent pointers! Great to see Father and Son working together as well, my Father is 85 and still checks on all my projects ha! Thanks again and keep up the RU-vid Channel!
Thank you, I appreciate that greatly. My dad is in his late 60’s and still keeps tabs on what I do and always has some pointers. Lucky we still have our dads that care enough to check in on us. Hope you have a great week!
Great pointers, Gary! Painting the pushrods and seam up; I have stainless steel ones on my car. Curil or Aviation Sealer on the pushrod seals is also a good idea. Nicely done! Also; you got a cool kid there; he knows The Killer! 🤣
I wanted stainless tubes but the local shop only had regular ones…. Figured why not 👍 I’ve had great luck not putting sealant on the seals and not having a single drip. I know it’s personal preference so I say do what works best for that person. Appreciate you as always 👍
Great video glad to see Levi getting in there...did this to our 68 few months back funny story...replace all tubes on 1 side slid head on told Allison to put head nuts n washers on for me boom she dropped a nut down a push rod tube ...it didn't stop n fell into case
Thanks, we actually had a good time regardless of how it came across on the video. He was in a mood but we pushed through and laughed later. Ouch, that stinks about dropping the nut down the tube 😔
Haha, the rattle can said 16.96 hp gain using that color 😂 I’m very fortunate to have him assist me and spend time with me. You’ll get there soon with yours! And I need to get caught up with your vids!!
Another reason to love bajas. The engine is right out there. I got lucky just changing the oil cover plate to fix my leak. The heat here in the south is rough but at least we have high humidity. LOL
Absolutely!! Bajas are easier to work on for sure. Glad the cover plate solved your issue. This engine didn’t leak until we came back from the test drive and found that the higher rpm’s while driving bs putting in the neighborhood showed the leaks… they weren’t minor either lol The humidity was brutal last weekend… I can not wait for it to cool down some.
Great Vid Levi. hehehe Not everyone has a engine stand or a shop Great example that you can do it without. I did that on a 2110 sandrail one time. As I recall thats when I decided to build my engine stand. LOL So glad you showed to use oil on the pushrod tube seals. Seen so many with gobs of Silicone which in my book is big NO NO. Thumbs UP!!!!!
Haha, Levi said thanks 😂 Thank you, that means a lot. Figured in this situation there was really no need to pull the engine and it was questionable if we needed to pull the rear cage. Silicone is definitely a no no on those seals, if you want to use anything, maybe permatex or gasket sinch but I’ve always put them in dry or worn oil and never had a single issue. Hope all is well sir!!
Thank you my friend. Not sure it’s the absolute best way but it’s a way that works for us and some tips in there that need to be followed. Pretty sure it took more time with him helping and us recording but it was 100% time well spent.
What, who wouldn’t want to see a push rod r&r video, nice to see Levi out there learning about these wonderful machines, noticed he had a little hard time getting the bail down, an old timer showed me the rag trick, and I never went back to the screwdriver plus keeps the chrome and paint nice, did Levi ever get chick-fil-A, after test drive video, great video as usual Gary, keep ‘em coming, catch you soon buddy
I hear ya, I figured people would want to see it personally. He was having a day to be honest. He said he wanted to help but when the time came he wasn’t in the mood to help but fulfilled his word. He was joking about the chick-fl-a because when we passed by it was a Sunday and they are closed 😂 He’s such a smarty pants 😂
I got my beetle up on the lift today to see where the oil leak was coming from. No3 exhaust pushrod tube seal blown out! 🙄 I will be using a telescopic one until i can be bothered to pull the engine. That's the good thing about the type 4 engine. You don't need to remove the heads to change the tubes.
Yes sir, would be a good time for that. We just replaced the oil cooler and seals about a month ago. Then we went for the test drive and found the push rod tubes leaking when driving only. Hope things are going well!
Hey Gary ! I went back and under #1 exhaust tube there was a drip . Maybe from oiling the seals ? And it's hot over here in Corpus Christi Texas also . thanks for the video !
I do prefer to take emery cloth to the seal surfaces however I didn’t want to do that with the engine fully assembled so I piled heavily to help them slide into place. I’ve seen the tens over there, you guys have had it rough there as well!
I like using the spring loaded ones. All you have to do is take the valve cover off, remove the rocker arms and pushrods then remove the old tubes then put adjustable tubes in. Reverse process and done. ALot less work but I understand why people want a more authentic look.
I ran the JayCee tubes in my other beetle for 3 years without issue. Figured I’d show the boy how to replace the regular tubes and someone else wanted to see the process. Like they say, more than one way to skin a cat.
Gary I have my motor in my 1974 and was filling it up with oil and looked under it and the oil was running out on the floor, one of my push rod seals was miss aligned and the oil running tubes have spring so I just realigned it and it stopped leaking, working on make sure we have fire hope to get it running
Great video, And you both have matching safety boots awesome. Great content and the quality of the video has improved heaps have you got a new camera. So Anyhoo thankyou for sharing ✌️ peace from Melbourne Australia.
Yes sir buddy, matching work boots 😂 Nothing dangerous happening that day but at least we weren’t barefoot 😎 Glad you’ve been able to see a difference in the vids, same camera but different software for about 8 months that’s taken some getting use to and more time at the desk editing. Always appreciate you my friend, can’t thank you enough.
Hey Scott. No sealant is needed on the push rod tube seals. Some people use sealant and that’s ok as long as you use a thin amount. NO sealant between the heads and cylinders ever.
@@scoth5135 of you’re new to building these engines then check out many of my engine build videos. When building the engine you lap the jugs to the heads to ensure a flat surface between the head and jug. It can leak at that spot IF the head comes loose but not normally.
i stretch good tubes waay out__ past head stud threads.... Use a Ratchet Strap(around undressed motor) to Compress/seat heads on. plenty hippies over-torqued to compress them_>plenty studs pulled outa block
The pushrods can't be inserted into the engine randomly....they should go into the same hole in which they were removed. It's nice seeing a dad teach his son how to spin a wrench.
We could debate that point but it’s not worth either one of our time. However off camera all push rods were checked for mushrooming heads, straightness and consistent length… All pushrods were the same. He’s spent a lot of time with me over the years in the garage, he’s quite the smart young man.
@@VWJawbreaker Thanks. I've been a mechanic since i got out of the military in '86. I've only had to do a handful of clutches and rear mains to Beetles early on. I'll have to go back and look at more of your videos because that goes against everything I've known about combustion chambers. Looking forward to it. Gonna learn something new.
@@almaiolatesi9567 I hear what you’re saying, trust me I do. However, AirCooled vw engines aren’t your typical Chevy or Cummins engines. Also, thank you for your service!
