In this video we teach you how to replace the Nest Protect Batteries. Batteries on the Nest Protect can last 3-10 years. Both the hardwired and battery powered Nest Protect smoke detectors have batteries installed. The batteries will last longer in hardwired nest protects then in battery powered nest protect smoke detectors.
The recommended batteries for the Nest Protect smoke/CO detector are energizer lithium batteries. The energizer lithium batteries last longer but also recommended for proper functionality of the Nest Protect Sensors.
To Replace Nest Protect Batteries:
1. If you have a hardwired Nest Protect smoke/CO detector turn off the power to the Nest Protect at the circuit breaker.
2. Rotate the Nest Protect to disengage the mounting tabs at which point you can pull the Nest Protect off the ceiling.
3. If you have a hardwired nest protect you will need to remove the wire clip that connects the Nest Protect to your electrical system.
4. Push the tab on the battery door to open the door and remove the existing batteries.
5. Replace the Nest Protect batteries with Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.

I had 2 battery only units that lasted on the first set (factory supplied) batteries for over 2 years and then both died with no warning at all. Wholly dark. When waking them with fresh batteries, I didn't have the special lithium batteries, just Duracell and one of them came right back on. I know if I want long life, I'll need to get the lithiums. What was really shocking, and may make me never buy from Nest again, is that the google support help, through three tiers, would not help me troubleshoot my connection issue until I confirmed with them that I had THAT BRAND AND MODEL of batteries. Obviously to the rest of us, on day ONE of the battery life, troubleshooting connectivity should be doable. I even explained that I had metered all the batteries. I also hardwired it to usb for power. I was able to power up the unit just fine with the duracells and/or the usb, but no one would discuss anything unless I had the right batteries. Pretty miserable support experience. Not sure why I told you all that except to ask... Can anyone imagine a scenario that maybe I can't think of, where it could appear to work fine, but not actually work fine, and it could ALL BE attributed to not having the right kind of special batteries??? I can't.

About 2-1/2 years after initial installation, one of my Nest Protect units started to chirp and I got a low battery waring in my Nest app. I went to change the original factory-supplied L91 batteries in this unit (one of my THREE Protect products) and one of the batteries was VERY hot. The other 5 were normal temperature. I had to put the hot battery outside to let it cool off before discarding. I'm now worried about my other Protect products and will take them out of service today. I see on the forums hundreds of others had similar issues. Please let me know your thoughts and if this is a known safety problem.

Never had that issue, and this is the first comment I've gotten about it. If you have 6 batteries sounds like you probably have the battery powered version? Can you confirm? Do you have the pathlight feature on? If it's being triggered all the time it probably it would use power and probably warm up the batteries. I don't think they would get that hot, but to me it sounds like a bad battery cell. Have you contacted nest about the issue what was their response?

@@OneHourSmartHome Yes, battery version. Original factory-supplied batteries were installed when it failed. Search the Nest forums. There are hundreds of others with the same problem. I'm in contact with Google Nest now. Hopefully they'll provide a solution.

Very strange. Chirping still coming from the ceiling somehow even after unit is off, put away with batteries taken out. So how in the world is the chirping coming from the bare frame without the unit.
