How to clean the Nest Protect Gen 2 smoke detector. Did you have a false alarm from your Nest Protect and need to clean your smoke detector. This will show you how to clean the generation 2 smoke detector from Nest. Dust particles overtime build up on the smoke detector and must be clean to stop the false alarms or dirty detector alerts. The generation 2 smoke detector is very good at its job but must have maintenance such as cleaning.

You can turn "heads up" off from the app. That's the culprit for me, a small whiff of smoke/steam and it goes off. Now that I turned heads-up off I don't get these alerts any longer and will only be notified if there is an emergency

did you disconnect the power before taking it off and putting it back?

I ended up just disconnecting the wire harness. It's definitely safer to turn the breaker off first.

Not really sure. The one in the video is about 3 years old, I got it when gen 2 was released. I have others that I have never had to clean I have both first & second generation detectors. I believe it depends how dusty of an area it is in.

It seems to do this only in the middle of the night. Between 12am and 5am. Which is weird. Does it go into super sensitive mode at night? I also don’t think we should have to clean it because of the cost alone. It costs $120 and that’s a lot of money for a smoke detector IMO. The only reason I bought this is TO know if there is an actual fire in my house while I’m away. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER NEST! Well now google.

I just had a false alarm, thankfully, at 1pm! Dusting and cleaning that guy and all my Protects now! Gave me a heart attack and several minutes of worried searching for a fire.

How stupid... Never heard of any smoke alarm needing cleaned.... no smoke or dust in my house... smashed the thing with a hammer and threw in garbage after the 4th false positive in the middle of the night.
