I recommend testing the ebrake before assembly. Want to make sure it grabs and releases. Put the rotor on and make sure it is free. Move ebrake 3-4 inches and make sure it grabs and then releases when ebrake is released

A missing step is servicing the adjuster screw. It and the wheel should be removed, freed up if needed, then lubricated, preferably using high temperature antiseize. The time to do it is while it's apart.

Anti-seize on the 2 brake caliper bracket bolts too. Lithium or Moly grease on the caliper slide bolts. OR buy some brake paste and use it on all brake lubing uses except the caliper bracket bolts.

Nice Video, One note: at 3:35, I notice he put the bracket on wrong. When you install that bracket it should step inward. the little tabs on the flat part (where the bolt goes through), should wrap around the metal boss to keep it from spinning.

You also should have added the bracket after the Shoe was in the piston slots. You could have slid the shoe into the slots versus prying the shoe open to get the second part of the U-Brake Shoe into the Piston Slot.

I was using this video as a guide but got confused about how he installed the shoe holddown bracket. As mentioned in one of the comments below, the bracket is installed backwards in the video. There are tabs on the bracket that keep it from spinning when tightening the bolt. Those tabs wrap around the little block it bolts to.

What about loosening the master cylinder cap before pressing the piston back in? That’s a bit important. Something has to give, It’s the opposite of regular brake application. Instead of the brake pedal pressing the piston outward, you are pressing the piston inward and thus the brake pedal back up. If you don’t loosen the master cylinder cap, you will “find any leaks “ which may or may not have been there already.

Thanks for the great video. At 4:40 how do you know how far to turn the adjuster if the rotor is not on.?? I remember spinning that adjuster through an access hole when adjusting rear brake shoes but the brake drum would be on at the time.

I didn't' see the need for the 22mm socket. Those 18mm bolts are fun getting loose. Granted I had my '04 Suburban on jack stands in the drive way and not up on a lift, so that made it a bit more challenging to get the right angle. I broke a regular 12 pt Craftsman socket using a breaker bar with a cheater bar. I sprayed some penetrating oil on the bolt head and down on the shaft, then used a 18mm combination wrench and a big pry bar to bust them loose. I highly recommend using an impact 18mm socket as it might save some skin on your knuckles. I did both sides in 2 1/2 hours. My retaining clips were in good shape so I left them alone. I noticed new ones in the box with the shoes. I left well enough alone. Thanks for the great video.

18mm wrench and a mallet/hammer/sledge hammer. Works waaay better than a socket/ratchet. Less depth, so less chance of it slipping off the bolt like a socket would. Allows you to not have to try and squeeze a cheater bar in there AND push/pry at an angle. 2min of hitting it a wrench with a mallet vs 10-30min of dealing with the hassles of using a socket/ratchet/cheater bar

The bracket is put on backwards in this video it goes on AFTER the shoes are installed NOT BEFORE. The bracket retains the inner race of the shoes and prevents the shoes from moving away from the backing plate
@wasupchristo

NIce worked for me just yes install the little tab piece after sliding on the shoe, install it the opposite way than what is shown in the video, then be careful not to shear the bolt head, I reused the old one rather than the one that came in the ACDelco replacement I bought. Seemed like better quality

Thanks for the helpful video. I noticed around the 3:25 to the 3:31 mark you guys changed the corroded brake dust shield with what looks to be a plastic or aluminum one. Does that bolt on or just snap on? I see plenty where you have to bolt it on, but on the video it looks like you can snap it on the wheel/hub assembly. Where can I get one of those? @larryleisuresuit9584

that was the only reason i was watching this, to see how far out the damned thing needs adjusted out so it perfectly utilizes the full holding power of the E Brake. BEFORE I put the whole damned thing back together. There is no way to adjust it out with the wheel on it, I don't ( never relay have) understand how the self adjusting works either. I am guessing this type brake is NOT self adjusting since it has no spring assisted arm deal. thing is. when I took mine apart I expected t o see it disabled some how, like the cable was off or something. what I found was really a surprise. the brake was worn on one side worse than the other AND did not work at all yet slipped right off the shoe when I was dismantling it. despite the 1/4 inch deep groove that was worn into the rotor.. yup. very weird and suspicious. also even more weird. the adjuster screw was almost all the way to the NEW, it had a gap that could barely fit a credit card in it. weirdest damned thing. so now I have brand spanking new rotors and I wanted to make sure it;s all good. but i'm really not finding jack shit for videos that put emphasis on the very important part of pre adjusting. I have guessed ahead of time the other side is exactly the same so I bought the pair of rotors. this would not be baffling to me at all if had taken me a half hour to slide that old rotor off and then I saw the groove, I would just think someone put the e brake on and drove the shit out of it and I would then wonder WHO since it is my damned truck. but i would not question what happened. this however is a mystery. it appears some one re adjusted a used worn out shoe, re installed a f'd up rotor ( It really is at least .25" deep) and put the wheel back on. back o the drawing board. LOL

On many drum brakes, in the back of the drum shield, there is an oval opening to use a brake took to adjust the parking brake. No such luck on the Chevy pickups. Take it apart, put it back together, repeat many times! >:{ . Mine is not working. Cable pulls and I can see the actuators move. But dang if I can't get the brake to hold. I am wondering do cables stretch very much???
@BA-gn3qb

What do you expect? It's a Chevy/GM. No common sense engineering. But you'd think an aftermarket rotor manufacturer would make a rotor with a parking brake adjuster hole.

+SAXONWARLORD1000AD If the shoes do not stop the rear wheels while the emergency brake is applied, you may have to adjust the cable. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

yeah, not happening.. I cleaned up in there and loaded up the E-brake shoe contact points with red rtv sealant. Put it all back together then slightly pressed the E brake pedal and let it dry over night.. No more rattle.. its been months ,,no problems.

+Henry Milek We happen to have a video on replacing it with a new, two-piece design we carry. Just go to the link and click the blue "play" button! www.1aauto.com/brake-backing-plate-rear-pair/i/1abmk00056?f=824561&y=2002

can someone tell me difference between a brake shoe and brake pad
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 6 лет назад
+taha rana Brake shoes typically are mounted on the inside of a brake drum. Brake pads are typically for on the front brakes (as shown in this video) and squeeze a brake caliper when the brake is applied. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

1A Auto Parts are brake shoes basically the handbrake brakes ?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 6 лет назад
+taha rana Most emergency brakes do use a shoe style pad. Many vehicle still use a rear brake shoe set-up and not a disk brake. 1aauto.com

1A Auto Parts and do rear drum brakes also have brake pads at the front of the rotor and brake shoes at the back ?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 6 лет назад
+taha rana If a vehicle had drum brakes it will take brake shoes. If it has disk brakes it will have a brake pad set-up. Many vehicles have drum brakes in the rear and disk brakes in the front. A lot of vehicles also have 4 wheel disk brakes. Hope this helps you out.

Wait, I thought this system only had a parking brake on one wheel?

What a crappy design. If I had to do it over, I wouldn't have bothered replacing the parking brake pads. Never use them anyway but figured since I was replacing the dust shields I may as well replace them.

Owned my 02 Silverado for 10 years and drove over 200k miles, NEVER needed to use the parking brake once,not even while servicing. Since it's an Automatic, is it possible to just chuck these old park shoes in the garbage and not replace them(put everything else back together properly), and rip out everything in the park brake system ?..cable,pedal etc? I don't see the point wasting $$ on something that serves no purpose, no longer functions, and is only good for problems like hanging up and dragging the wheel.

It’s required by law. Probably in all states. I had one of those first gen Silverados in which these shoes always fail because of the flimsy retaining clip. Of course I took good care of mine and put the upgraded hardware. Went to a shop to get an inspection and the lazy bum obviously didn’t want to do it. He told me to put the parking brake on, put it in drive, and give it some gas. When it didn’t budge, he got so aggravated. He told me he was too busy to do it. It was hilarious how he thought he was going to get me to leave with the parking brake test. /rant
