Best video for replacing brakes on this type of vehicle I've seen. Adjusting those pads to the right position is really a pain in the butt.

Very good video. A couple of items that should have at least been mentioned (IMHO). I grew up twisting wrenches and it's easy to make vids for tech-savvy DIYers. Add a few more tips to the beginners. All in all, 👏👍 1) Early in the video, when starting to remove caliper bracket. The backing plate is missing. Later it was in place. Unless I blinked and missed it. Should have been noted and what had to be done to replace backing plate. 2) You mentioned the 8mm head bolt on the retainer clip. Needed to mention what had to happen if bolt breaks and the results of just leaving it off. 3) The left and right hand adjuster wheels are oriented quite different from left to right. 4) The importance of grease in the space between the cups because in the northeast we have so much salt corrosion that if the rubber boot over the arm from the parking/emergency brake lever, is intended to (try) keep water, dirt, salt, etc out of the mechanism. Also, the boots can be replaced, although few stores stock them. Nice 11 minute video, would have enjoyed a 15 and a few more details.

Thanks for this vid. You save a major step by decompressing the caliper and just swing the whole caliper and cradle off. Others take the caliper off the cradle and then remove the cradle. (Why oh why?) My brake was bottoming out. It took just one revolution of the adjuster each side and now it engages at half travel. Felt great to do it myself.

Excellent video for the shoes in detail. Do you have any info on how the cable attaches? I had a shop replace the parking brake shoes. I had adjusted them several times since I had the truck. The pads were finally barely left. After being at the shop the parking brake peddle bottoms out. I took apart to adjust, thinking they just didn't know how to adjust these, and the shoes are not mounted with the clip and 8 mm bolt (did they lose them?). The clip that stops the adjuster from turning is also missing on one side. Grrrr. I have a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4. Got 230,000 miles on it too! I wonder if the shop attached the cable with a rocker correctly. Thank you.

Definitly don’t want to overtighten that bracket bolt like he mentioned, just broke the head off one. But by some miracle I was able to spin it out with a small punch and a hammer. Another solution would be to remove one of the lug nut studs and use an ez out. Also, I found it much easier to put the little bracket on first and then hook the shoe over it.

I've always had trouble adjusting the parking shoes. Not being too tight/ loose but it makes contact and rubs. My question is where is the shoe supposed to sit, down against the mounting bracket? Cause I feel it's never center

My 2001 Silverado parking brake has never held. I've had the entire system redone twice and it still doesn't hold the truck no matter how it's adjusted. It's frustrating because it's required to work for passing inspection. This year they hit me with it during inspection for the first time in 10 years. It cost some serious money and it still doesn't hold.

Is that caliper grease you were using zinc or can you use anti-sieze zinc. I have a 2003 Z71 Avalanche 1500 and I have to do this in the next few days. Your video is the most informative I have seen and answered a lot of questions I had.

Some threadlocker on the bracket bolts (not slide bolts) is normal practice and doesn't hurt anything. I think the blue is the one that is reccomended, but some threadlocker isn't a bad idea on the bracket bolts.
@nathaniellarson8
@nathaniellarson8 3 года назад
You definitely are supposed to put red loctite on those, actually you are really supposed to get brand new bolts which come with the red loctite already on them. Red loctite is a better hold for anti-vibration. Heat them with a torch and they come off easy.

Didn't even explain where and how the cable hooks up and why the rubber boots burst out. Piss poop video getting lucky because I broke the small bolt even though I used penetrate. I adjusted the shoe adjuster just with a slight drag on rotor and would do you know. No emergency/ parking brakes. Tighten the cable adjustment and still no parking brakes. I didn't mention this truck never had any parking brakes since I got it from my dad after it was only four years old and less than 50,000 miles. Piss poor GM design

grinding surface rust & metal off the hub assembly seems a bit anal & overkill to me. LOL you should not do anything that resembles grinding on a piece of metal that holds your rim on.. sandpaper is fine, but still not necessary for a brake job. stick to areas the brakes are mounting. otherwise great video.

If the rear parking brake(horse shoe) mounting bracket(the small 8mm bolt) does break off, it’s going to be a long process to fix. If anyone has better way please add… Drain(re-use) diff oil, Remove cover Remove “C-lock” that holds the wheel shaft,(use a rubber mallet to hit the end of the wheel shaft to move inwards of the posi carrier). Use a small magnet to fish out the “c-lock” Carefully remove shaft You can remove the brake housing or leave on Drill out the broken stud Use a self tap screw to make new threads or a tap. I used a self tap screw, next size up. Repeat beginning steps to put back together. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Mine broke off and redoing everything to be safe.. oh add some sealant/coating so the bolt doesn’t rust/freeze. Or use a “right angle” drill to get between the wheel hub🤷🏻‍♂️
@oldschoolcars3318
@oldschoolcars3318 2 года назад
NEVER use a self tapping screw on brakes. Buy the proper replacement screw and a drill and tap to fit it. The Easiest shortcut to replace the bolt if you dont have a SMALL right angle drill, is to drill a pair of holes in the hub between the studs 180 degrees apart. The second hole is to maintain wheel balance. Once you have the hole drilled into the hub, you can use a standard drill with a longer bit to drill out the old one. If using something like an extractor you will need a long set, or a very short set with a small right angle drill.
