How To Replace Prius 3rd Generation Car Water Pump 

I have over 215000 miles noticed the Checked Hybrid light was on and the car stalled. Waited ten min to restart the car and the Check Hybrid light was gone. Took it to the dealer and it was the engine water pump that needed to be replace. I'm sticking with a dealer part. Usually when I put an after market part in the car, they're not durable as manufacturer parts. Great presentation.

This was wayyyy more difficult than it looks for at least 2 of those bolts, which I had to feel around and be patient to get loose...and then tighten. That being said.. THANK YOU A MILLION!!!! I changed it MYSELF for a third of what the dealership was going to charge me, parts and labor. 💜

There is a relay in the engine fuse box associated with this problem. It is the R1 Cooling system (ENG W/P) and is located on the top right side of the engine fuse box. This relay can weaken with a failing water pump. After replacing the pump, if you get a P251C and the car possibly entering limp mode, replace this relay. It's about $17. Ask me how I know. I was working on a friend's Gen3 and put their relay in my car and after 30 minutes of driving, BOOM, P261C.

Do you have to bleed the system after replacing the water pump?

What DTC you got or what was the symptoms to make you decided to replace this pump?

HELP, please. Problem is sporadic random overheating, accompanied with coolant liquid blown out tru the release valve on the plastic overflow container. I installed new thermostat (ebay), new water pump (the old one looks ok, and the rotor does not appear to be damaged) pressure test was good, keeps 12 psi for long time, exhaust fumes in coolant is negative, I pumped many many many times, the liquid remains blue... Any information will be greatly appreciated.

12 mm deep socket, (if possible, a flex head rachet) and removing passenger tire and small side cover, makes it easier.

Why does the dealership charge so much? Do they have to reprogram what the water pump does with a tablet they use or what?

Did the coolant leak before replacing?

I replaced my pump today and now it sounds like i have a flat tire (although I don't, I checked) and there is a squeaking noise when I'm accelerating at slow speeds

Do i need to flush the coolant before? How much coolant do you need?

How about the inverter water pump.

Too bad you didn't pull out the impeller to see if the outside plastic ring split on the old one. That usually causes the binding that IS the Failure.

My prius 2012 is blowing it's 30amp fuse. If its disconnected the fuse will not blow. But once connected the fuse blows. Could it be the water pump need replacement?
