If you don't have the special tool, you can use a open end wrench and twist, not everyone is close to a auto parts store.

How do I get the emergency brake off the caliper. I can't figure out how to get it!!
@justinmeyer6612
@justinmeyer6612 7 лет назад
Thanks for the helpful video. I never would have figured out that I needed to screw the caliper piston in rather than compress it with a c clamp. I didn't have access to the special tool so I ground away two sections of of a cheap socket so it would engage with the notches in the caliper piston and it worked just fine. The tool is the right way to go but a modified socket is another option if the tool is not available. Also note that, at least with the pads I bought, I had to align the notches in the piston with the bump on the pads or they would not open wide enough to go onto the rotor. Hope this info helps someone.

Mine is 14mm brake bolts. Also if you don't have the tool a 14mm wrench and socket extension through the closed end works!

When screwing the piston / actuators back into the caliper housing are you turning it in a clockwise rotation and is it the same direction on both left and right rear calipers?
@1AAuto

In the video on doing the front brakes you use a C clamp to get the piston back in; but in this video you use a special tool to do the same thing. I wish to know if there is a reason for this? should i use the tool on the front as well as the rear or should i use a C clamp for both or does it matter?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 10 лет назад
On the front brakes you can use a C clamp, the rear calipers on this vehicle are different, they require the tool shown in the video to turn the caliper piston back into the collapsed position. You should be able to get one of these tools at your local auto parts store.

I need to know how to remove and reinstall the caliper. Where it has the emergency brake line on it am afraid I might mess something up. It would really help to see it done so I know I'm doing it right.

thank you both very much i honestly had no clue about this tool as ive only worked on mostly older brakes that you simply pressed back in with a good c-clamp and some cardboard to avoid scoring

Do you have to bleed the brake fluid after changing the break pads?
@roccojett
@roccojett 5 лет назад
I believe bleeding the brakes is recommend anytime any brake work is perforned.. remember to bleed farthest to closest to the master cylinder.
@donhixon1669
@donhixon1669 4 года назад
As long as you don't open any of the lines you shouldn't have to bleed the system.
@mobrien7211
@mobrien7211 3 года назад
Bleeding is to get air out, if you "open" the system there is no air to let out.

CAUTION! Caliper Bracket Torque is 96 lb ft (at least for the saturn aura) I followed this video back in December for my Aura and it was extremely helpful. However the caliper bracket bolt fell out last weekend on the highway causing the caliper to fall onto the rotor and make an awful grinding noise and was unsafe to drive. Reviewing my service manual which I should have checked to begin with I see that the Caliper bracket bolt torque is 96 lb ft, the caliper pins are 26 lb ft and the brake hose to caliper bolt is 37 lb ft

+Connor Classen Good point, these parts fit multiple vehicles and some require different torque specs. Make sure to consult a repair manual if you are unsure of those specs. 1aauto.com
@charliemartin8955
@charliemartin8955 Год назад
I mean, kind of common sense that a Pontiac G6 and a Saturn Aura wouldn't have the same torque specs. They are, of course, 2 different makes, models, and trims.
