THANK YOU! A friend did my front brakes with me and now I am ready to do the rear brakes on my own. How awesome that I have a 2004 4-runner and you showed me every step. The front brakes were different so THANK YOU for explaining the rear change in simple to understand layman terms!

Thanks Jim! Tackled the brakes this weekend - haven't done brakes in 30 years and took my time on the first side, second side took about 1/5 the time as I didn't have to watch the video constantly. Went great with your step by step, detailed instructions!!

Just finished replacing the pads and rotors on my 05 4Runner. One item you didn't happen to mention was the rubber boots that protect the slide bolts. I bought a kit from a well known website (Rock......com) that included pads, clips, rotors and boots. I was quite glad I did. One of my slides was frozen and the pad was grinding against the rotor. The boots they provided are different for the top and bottom slides. I just thought I'd mention this as a hint to others to just pay attention as they remove the old ones. It makes replacing them much easier. That was the only issue that you didn't address (and I admit it's pretty minor). thanks for the very thorough and well produced video and all the help it provided.

you can adjust the parking brake shoes with a screwdriver on the little star wheels that can be accessed with clearance holes in the rotors if they are positioned at 6 and 12 o'clock
@gregallen9065
@gregallen9065 4 года назад
exactly......he left out a critical step since many times you cannot get the rotor off without backing the parking brake shoes all the way in to clear the "lip" of rust that forms inside the rotor near the edge where the emergency brake pads do not touch........many times getting the rotor off is the toughest part of a job like this AND you always have the star wheel adjusted all the way in when you replace the rotor and go through the parking brake adjustment procedure. I was amazed that he completely left that out, not only that he also stated you could not adjust them.....wow. Gotta love these RU-vid mechanics.....lol.
@richward2288
@richward2288 3 года назад
@@gregallen9065 Also, there are 2 threaded holes in the rotor. You can insert a 14mm head, 8.8 hardness (grade 5) 29.5 mm length, 7.85 mm dia., pitch is about 1.25 mm. WD40 around the axle area, back off the emergency brake, then screw the 2 bolts into the rotor and it will come off; much easier than a hammer. Be careful not to strip the threads in the rotor.

@@jimthecarguy thanks for the great video. I just need help with one problem. When I laid the caliper off the the side. Fluid pushed the cylinder out. I could get it back in. I had to clamp the hose and take apart the cylinder caliper and clean out and put back together. But when I try to bleed out the air with the valve nothing happens. Bleeder valve is clean so I'm stumped

Awesome vid. Thanks for the post up. I tried to post up a pic of what happens if you ignore the grinding. It wasn’t pretty. My pad pretty much separated from the caliper and heated up enough to melt through one of the piston seals and lost all of my fluid sitting at a light. Scary situation. Moral: procrastination can kill you.

I am somewhat confused. You said that grease on the pads is not a problem because you clean them with brake cleaner after installed. If you spray brake cleaner on the assembled caliper won't that wash away all of the silicone grease that was just applied? maybe show how you do that?

Starting in 2006 they made a lot of good changes to the lighting systems - added LEDs, added projector headlights, and some other improvements in different areas. I don't think there were any significant changes between 2006-2009.

Great video, thank you Jim. Just one input - I followed this to the T, went well except for the broken parking brake spring trying to get the rotor off. You mention this as a concern, but the hammer technique resulted in the broken spring. Another video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aauPXz-Rdik.html) shows that you can loosen the parking brake which makes getting the rotor off super easy. Wish I had seen the other video before I did the job

That poor 4Runner has been driven on salted roads without adequate frame corrosion protection. Every two years, I reapply Surface Shield to prevent frame corrosion on my 2005 4Runner. Frame corrosion is car cancer. Everything else can be fixed or replaced. A rusted frame is the death of an older truck. My Tacoma frame rusted through at 91,000 miles and rusted in half at 137,000 because of a Toyota defect that they refused to fix, and I live in central KY with barely salted roads.
