Thanks a lot for the video. It helped me with a Hoover washing machine that suddenly stopped spinning, just a few weeks after the labour warranty expired. How convenient... Anyway, I called a technician in, and it was the drum wheel that had come off, along with the belt. Exactly five days after being relieved of 55 euros for his visit, you guessed: it stopped spinning again. Called him in again, same problem, he fixed it, no charge this time. Today is exactly 5 days since his last visit, and you won't believe it... it happened again! This time I did the job myself after finding your video. Let's see how long it will last... next time I think I'll just reach for a sledgehammer.

Thank you so much. Our WM stopped working, it turned on, but wouldn't spin. We was about to buy a new WM, until a colleague said, it's the belt, probably loose or broken. Watch several video, yours is the only one made sense. Tried it, and it worked finally, was able to snap the belt back on. But we still need to buy a new belt. I asked my mum to spin the drum manually inside, as soon as she does this, the belt comes off. I position the belt perfectly, but the belt slowly pushes to the back and comes off. Most likely the belt has come bent or so we are going to order a new one.

If the bearings are worn or the drum pulley is loose it may tilt and cause the belt to come off. Open the door and apply a slight upward pressure to the inner drum front lip to see if there is play between the drum and the door seal. Also spin the drum without the belt to listen for a loud rumbling noise. Both are signs of worn bearings. Check the drum pulley is not loose at the back. Good video, i've just changed the brushes on my beko washer and this came in useful for putting the belt back on. The nack this guy has for fitting the belt back on can not be understated. I had to put my thick winter glove on because the belt was so tight to get it on and required that much pull.

Hi Karen, although it's likely that this is a control board issue, just have a check that the carbon brushes on the machine's motor aren't worn down, as these could also cause the problem (you can see how to do that in another one of our videos). If they look OK then you'll probably need to replace the control board in the machine. Head to our website with your model number for any replacements. Cheers!

Reply to Cle Silva's comments below: Thanks for the comment. I have come across a number of Hoover machines with this problem and the cause was usually worn splines on the drum pulley allowing it to work loose. Hold back on the sledgehammer if it reoccurs and order a drum pulley. I've got a Zanussi and my belt definitely snapped but what if the wheel isn't moving and also the drum isn't spinning freely so the belt can't be easily put on

Hi Nimesh, the pulleys can seize and the drum seal can jam the drum. Check and replace the pulley if required and take the drum out to check if there is a problem with the bearing or felt seal and replace that if required.

You're lucky that you could remove the back panel so easy. I have Electrolux machine and there is no removable back for it, it's assembled with two U shaped plates from thefront and the back, so you basically have to unscrew half of washing machine to get change the belt. Or if you have helping hands, you can put your machine with face down and then reach your hands inside from the top while someone else is holding the belt on the motor spindle on the other side of the machine. It's tricky but doable.

Hi Camelcased, many machines from AEG Electrolux and Zanussi have your 'Clam style' cabinets. They look worse than they are, to remove the back take out one screw either side in the middle behind a plastic plug. With the top of remove 2 screws either side on the top edge middle to rear brackets. Then unclip the valve brackets and remove three screws at the back lower edge and maybe one on the top to the fan motor on washer dryers. The case should then slide off backwards and the drum remain attached to the front and base.

hello, just wanted to ask for your help; My Hotpoint washing machine only 3 months old from new makes screeching kinda noise ONLY when the drum is agitating during WASH cycle but nothing happens on fast spin cycle, could it be pump or belt or pulley or shock absorbers ? p.s. noise happens when drum rotates anti-clockwise during wash despite tiny load. Hi, open the door and gently turn the drum to provoke the problem and confirm it is caused by drum rotation. Check that there is no packaging material caught under the machine that could be contacting the motor or pulley. There can be a little noise from the belt as it contacts the drum pulley and this can be normal. If you think the noise is excessive contact your supplier to arrange a service call as you should be under warranty and the machine should not be screeching during normal use.

Thanks for this video - you make it look so simple! I've just spent half an hour trying to get the belt on (following these instructions) and all I've achieved are thumb blisters and very dirty hands? Does it require a lot of strength (I'm quite a small woman) or am I doing it wrong? Thanks again!

Hi Toni, sometimes a new belt can take a bit of effort to both turn the pulley and hold onto the lip at the same time. A easy way to ensure it does not slip off the pulley as you turn it is to tie it on with either a cable tie or some strong string around the belt and rim several times. once the belt cannot come off the rim align it on the motor and pulley and rotate until fully on. You can then cut the string or tie before refitting the back. Good luck!.

Hi Lloyd, compare with your original belt. These belts are usually stretched and tensioned by the motor position. Loosen the motor bolts and fit the belt as shown in the video. Once in place carefully use a large screwdriver to lever the motor away from the tub and tension the belt as you re tighten the bolts.

Hi El Sim, there is a inspection panel in the shape of a tear drop held by one screw. It will be difficult to slip the motor off its mounting pegs when the screws are removed and watch out for the sharp cabinet edges. You can if easier disconnect and carefully lower the machine onto its side to remove the motor once the belt is removed.

I have replaced the brushes in my motor a couple times without have problems with the belt and put a new belt on last year, belt refuses to stay on the motor spindle. any suggestions as to why this is happening? Thanks for the vid, by the way.

Hi, my washing machine went through the washing cycle drained when it got to the spin cycle but didn't spin. I have checked the belt as you have shown in your video and it is still in one piece. Hi Sarah, on most washing machine there is an access panel but would depend on the brand how big it is, if your panel is small you may be able to change the belt by taking the top off and reaching down the back to change it.

hi, im partially sighted and am driving myself mad. i have access to the motor and drum . fit the rubber to motor the up around the drum. ive placed a clip to hold in place whilst trying to move the drum so the rubber will fit. omg what am i doing wrong im scared to turn the drum to hard incase i do damage. what else can you suggest to make it easier to fix. thank you

Posting here solution, how I replaced belt on my 6 year old Samsung B1015J washing machine, which doesn't have removal back wall nor U-shaped walls - its sides are welded to floor panels - so it's no way to possible access drum pulley and motor from back. Maybe this will help someone. When I compared the new belt with old belt, difference in length was huge - loosely 5 cm when holding them in hand and letting hang. First thought, when new belt was on drum's pulley and tried to pull belt onto motor pulley, was that, how the hell I'm going install that, when it's like 5 cm away from motor pulley (motor was already adjusted, so it was as close to drum as possible - I think I could move it like 15 mm closer). I stretched the belt with hands, pulling hands apart, to make this job easier. Then put the belt on motor pulley and on top of drum pulley and turned the drum pulley while guiding belt with fingers from top opening (washer was on its side and top lid off). Not possible, belt didn't even reach that critical point from where it will go on by itself. At one point I was thinking to gutting hole in back wall. :D Luckily I didn't have any tool for that at my disposal. lol I got the belt on using a ratchet and socket. I put the socket between the belt and drum pulley and while turning slowly a pulley and moving ratchet at same speed with pulley, belt went on with first try.

An old engineers trick is to use a cable tie to fix the belt to one point on the pulley, carefully loop over the motor spindle and then turn the drum to pull the belt around. once fully fitted onto the pulley rotate to the cable tie and remove it. :-)

Good tip. I have one question. My washer's motor' position is adjustable. Should I fix the motor with new belt as far as possible so that belt would be as tight as possible or it's not a good idea (maybe too tight belt will shorten bearings' life)? Thx and sry for my grammar.

Väle Nool The belt should only allow approximately 20 mm movement when pushed firmly in between motor and pulley. You can adjust this by moving the motor.
