Dear heavenly days thank you!!! I tried everything I could to get the light cover off except for the right thing! Thank you for not saying “First take cover off”. Not only did you take it off, you clearly showed how it was fastened. Thank you for saving me the cost of fixing my ceiling, because my next step was hammer-related! My sister found this video, yay!! Thank you!

THANK YOU. My "carpenter" friend told me I has to get some boards put in the attic to mount this cover to the ceiling, BUT, looking at the design of the cover that didn't make sense. Searched on RU-vid, there your video was! Looks great now! Wow! Was so easy!

Thank you ! I am women and i was able to do it myself. My husband thought we needed to get in the attic but that was not the case. The hardest part was trying to hold it while attaching the wires to each other. I took a wire hanger and hung it while i attached the wires. It has been out of order and on the to do list for a while now. Works great! TY

Video is still helpful! Our bathroom walls were getting so wet when taking a hot shower; ok I was the only one causing that because I take stupidly long and dangerously hot showers. Anyway! It was smothered in dust, so I took it off (thanks to your video for showing me how), cleaned it, and am hoping that helps. If not, now I know how to replace it!

I think if you can match the exact parts and fan/light assembly, you may not need to go into the attic, if you're just replacing the overhead fixture, bulb, and just plugging in the new fixture, otherwise, you'll be going into the attic and probably replacing all the exhaust stuff too.

I just moved into an old small home dating from 1927: luckily the overhead shower fan works fine, as does the main bathroom overhead light, amazingly, so I'm not messing with it. Instead I'll install a battery LED overhead shower light on the ceiling, and leave it at that. I also currently don't have access to the attic, it's locked off and a total mess, from what I was told.

no need to go in attic. the plate retaining the fan motor and blades is removable. locate small retaining screw near the plugins for fan and light. if no set screw look for metal retaining tabs that hold much like a cereal box top. replace fan motor and plate. if new plate wont match up just swap out the motor n reinstall.

Part of the reason for the attic was to make sure wiring was in good shape and it was vented properly. Also, mine was easily accessible. Good to know you can still change it out even if you can't get to the box via the attic. Thanks for the input!

This fan works very well. ru-vid.comUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh I replaced my old fan as our radon levels began to spike. When I remove the old fan water poured out of the fan. Must have entered in through the out spout. Replaced with this unit and levels dropped a bit but still over 4.0.Did some more digging and found that we had a small hole under our waste pipe that was allowing some water and radon in.Patched the hole and the levels dropped almost overnight.I really would recommend the radon sensor. It gives real time readings. Without it we would have never known that we had this issue.
@DrShankopotamus
@DrShankopotamus 8 месяцев назад
Great info. I didn't say much about radon. We also live in a "radon rich" area. It's definitely wise to periodically check levels. We have had ours checked about every 5-6 years or so. i don't have any experience the continuous monitoring.

As others have pointed out, not a good idea to vent into the attic. I just had a section of our roof replaced due to mold that had formed and rotted out the wood sheathing. Turns out it was from a vent pipe from a bathroom exhaust fan.

It's NEVER a good idea to pump hot, steamy bathroom shower exhaust into an attic only..... Trust me, 55 sheets of plywood and a new roof is a direct consequence of previous owner not installing a $18 roof vent kit, yes $18 kit at Menards was a no brainer after a $7500 roof job and the guys installed it for nothing since they were down to basically no roof.

@hamdude2109
@hamdude2109 3 года назад
Indeed you can. Leave the outer box in place and install new guts in it. Take the guts out and find the model number, go to HD or Lowes and buy a new example of same model. Remove guts from new one and install them in old one. Throw away new outer box.. it only takes a few minutes and you DON'T have to go into the attic. Apartment complexes do these by the hundreds.
@rhymereason3449
@rhymereason3449 4 года назад
I have that exact same model - you could have just pulled the motor out from below and replaced it... although by going into the attic you discovered other issues. It's never good to exhaust hot steamy air into an unheated attic space. In my case the idiots nailed it to the joist between floors and I have no access to pull it out without destroying a tile floor or a bunch of ceiling drywall. I'm probably going to have to destructively cut it out as I have a wiring issue behind it.
@DrShankopotamus

Good luck with that one...You're right about the attack...but my attack is very large/open, and I elected to keep the exhaust there and not run exhaust hose all the way to the outside...too much work...Thanks for watching.

@DrShankopotamus
@DrShankopotamus 3 года назад
Thanks for the input. House was built that way 20+ years ago and not a spot of mold in it. Since it was built(and passed inspection) I saw no reason to take the extra time, extra money and extra risk(see my prior post) to fix it...as I have said many times before...code says exhaust to outside, mine wasn’t so I left it that way...and size does matter. Humidity of the bathroom air will have very little effect on the overall humidity of my attic. Thanks for watching.

You can go digging around through the box and check the connections for the light...or just replace the fan. One option...When you replace the fan, turn the power back on very carefully with terminal twists on each wire so you don't start a fire. You can use a multi meter to be sure you are getting power to the fan light. If you have power turn the power back off and install your new fan. If you don't have power call an electrician. Another option. Just install the new fan and see if the light works, if it doesn't then there's a problem with the wiring...call an electrician.

@douglasthompson2740
@douglasthompson2740 3 года назад
"It's ok to exhaust into the attic" he says. Well right there it is apparent you have no idea what you are talking about. It is not ok to vent into an attic--period. If you don't understand that you don't understand condensation and other basics. Plus it is really as easy as it gets when you have full access on a steep pitch roof in the attic. Do that in a 4/12 pitch or less and see how easy those maneuvers are! In many cases you will have to do everything from down in the bathroom opening the sheet rock if necessary. It is also very important to insulate your ducting from the fan to the outside which is another high condensation area.
@DrShankopotamus
@DrShankopotamus 3 года назад
We have already been over this...😉. Fan was exhausted into the attic (by the builder) for 20+ years without any damage. The attic is huge. Yes, code says to exhaust to the outside, but my house came with that particular fan exhausted into the attic and i decided to leave it there and not go traipsing around the huge attic to lay 20-30 feet of exhaust conduit, cut a hole in the soffit and fall two stories while trying to attach the coding approved duct terminals to the outside...You're point is well taken. But I believe my reasoning is sound. Thanks for watching. And taking the time to help out with fixin' stuff.

You can replace just the motor, if you’re looking to save a few bucks.

Thanks for the info...That's the word from several other viewers as well. And would avoid my attic time and the whole "vent was in the attic and I left it there" controversy😂😂😂...Thanks for the input and thanks for watching

Why didn’t you mention that you could easily replaced the motor without having to go in the attic?

Bath fan must be vented out the roof or side of building. Otherwise moisture and mold accumulates
@DrShankopotamus

Thanks for watching...House was built with van vented into the attic and was that way for 20+ years...No damage...Attic is HUGE (as I show in the video) and bathroom is small. Otherwise, definitely vent to the outside, but the continued controversy has been great fun.

Why would you exhaust moisture into your attic? 🤦‍♂️

You didn't show how to get the cover off, the most important part. :(

Sorry...It has little tabs on the sides that will flex in and allow the center light cover to be removed.

What if you can't get in the attic? There's just a small square spot that an adult can't fit through
@DrShankopotamus

You can replace them without going into the attic. The hard part can sometimes be getting the old one out. On a few I had to remove the "guts" and use shears to cut the metal box to get at the nails/screws holding it in. I've done several that way. I'll see if I can get a video on the next one I do. Thanks for watching.

Its never a good idea to exhaust moisture into a cold attic! # mould
@DrShankopotamus
@DrShankopotamus 5 лет назад
You saw mine was exhausted right onto the sheet rock. The attic is very large...No mold/moisture yet after 20 years...Was a calculated guess just to get it up off the drywall. If your attic is smaller I would definitely exhaust to outside.

Mine is not exhausted. It’s the original unit since the home was built in 1993. I am in Alabama, could be because we don’t experience frigid cold winters like the North?

Yep...In the attic. It stopped in the attic 20+ yrs ago with the original builder...and that's where I left it. Go figure. Thanks for the feedback.😊

NEVER vent your air into your attic. If yours is this way you had a lazy builder!!
@DrShankopotamus

I would agree...but mine was exhausted that way into a HUGE attic for over 20 years with no problems...Not sure about the builder, he seems to be a stand up guy. Thanks for watching.

Actually, not venting your exhaust fan to the exterior of your house is a code violation. It's unfortunate that the good doctor doesn't do a bit more research on basic residential codes before sharing his wisdom with the internet world.

Please don't ever vent your warm moist bathroom air into your attic space. Trust me this is coming from someone who had to sell a house that had mold in the attic. We had to spend $5,000 in mold remediation due toa bathroom then that it was unknowingly venting into the attic.
@DrShankopotamus
@DrShankopotamus 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely correct in most cases. Mine was vented to the HUGE attic for 20+ years without any damage, so I left it that way. Just put a fan in my daughters house and cut through the roof to get it vented outside...Thanks for watching.

As soon as you said it’s OK to exhaust your bathroom air into your attic, you lost me lol that is so incredibly wrong. That’s how you get mold. It looks like you’ve got some mold growing on your attic ceiling from this video
